1.9.5 Addresses

Rule: Street numbers precede street names.

Examples of errors:

(1) My address is During Street 7.
(2) Send it to Hercules St. 85.

In contrast to German, addresses in English are given with the number first, e.g.:

The Prime Minister's address is No. 10 Downing St.
I live at 5204 Washington Avenue

If the number is added after the street, as an afterthought or further specification, it is marked off from the main clause by punctuation and intonation:

I live on Washington Avenue, (Number) 5204
