4.2 Misuse and omission of various prepositions

There are no useful general rules governing the use of prepositions, since this depends on the individual lexical items with which the preposition occurs, as well as the meaning of the preposition itself. Furthermore, the meanings of the preposition and of the co-occurring lexical items are usually interdependent; that is, each is defined in terms of the other.
