7.4 Another
Rule: Another is not used in comparative expressions.
Examples of errors:
(1) In a large city there is another atmosphere than in a small village.
(2) But they have to find another way as they have tried so far.
Another can be used as a determiner or pronoun to mean 'one more'--either the same as or different from--whatever is being referred to, .e.g.:
I like this pear; give me another (one) (i.e. of the same kind)
I don't like this pear; give me another (one) (i.e. a different one)
Although implications of sameness or difference are thus inherent in the meaning of another, it is not used in explicit comparative expressions, i.e. in combination with a second element introduced by than or as. The second error in (2)--as instead of than--is described in 7.1.
