My advice to learners is to always use
the full form, both in writing and speech ("e.g." is seldom spoken,
except in imitating formal writing), because in some cases it is inappropriate
even in writing. Here are some examples
where you would say and write "for example," but not the
abbreviation:
*He
likes bowling, e.g.
*If
you are in a supermarket, e.g., and somebody asks you...
*George
Washington was truthful. E.g., he
admitted cutting down the cherry tree.
