Read Genesis 18

In the last lesson we learned that God made His covenant with Abraham. A covenant is a pact or agreement. Abram’s name was changed to Abraham and Sarah’s was changed to Sarah. Again God promised He would make Abraham’s offspring into a great nation.

In Genesis 18 we read that three men showed up at Abraham’s door. The Bible does not say but we can assume Abraham did not know who they were. He was kind to the men and offered them water to wash their feet and gave them food to eat. He was extravagant with the food and even killed a fat calf to provide them with food. The three men, who were angels, told Abraham that he would have a child with Sarah. Sarah who was just inside the tent door laughed when she heard this because she was very old. The angel confronted her about it and Sarah denied laughing.

At this point the angels told Abraham that God was going to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah because their sins were an abomination to God. Abraham’s nephew Lot lived in Sodom so Abraham bargained with the Lord about destroying it. Abraham asked Him if He would destroy it if there were fifty people living there who were righteous. God told him He would not. He then queried if it would be destroyed if there were twenty there who were found to be righteous. God told him it would not be. Abraham then pushed it even farther and asked if it would be destroyed if God found ten people there who were righteous. God told him it would not be. Abraham let it go at that. He was satisfied that the city would be saved by virtue of his nephew living there. At the very least he knew that Lot would be spared.

The world we live in today is every bit as sinful as Sodom and Gomorrah. If God were to come to our world would He find ten people in it righteous enough to save the world for? Are we speaking out against evil in our world and warning those in it of the wrath of God?
