Read Genesis 19
In the last lesson we learned that God informed Abraham that He was going to destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham bargained with God to save the cities if even ten righteous people were found there. God said He would. In this lesson we will continue the Sodom and Gomorrah account.
Two angels went to Sodom and Gomorrah in the evening to warn Lot of the city’s impending destruction. The angels planned to stay in the street all night but Lot insisted that they stay in his house with him. He told them he would give them water to wash their feet and that he would fix them a meal. They were welcome to get up early the next morning and leave. At his insistence the angels stayed in his house. The men of the city surrounded Lot’s house and insisted that he send the two strangers out to them so they could molest them. Lot went out and offered to send out his daughters who were virgins if the men would leave the strangers alone. The men of the city tried to break Lot’s door down and take the angels by force. The angels brought Lot back into the house and blinded the men at the door. Then they told Lot their purpose in coming. Lot was to leave the city and take his family and what possessions they could carry. They were instructed not to look back. Lot told his sons-in-law that God was going to destroy the city and his sons-in-law just looked at him like he was crazy. (Probably the same look that we often get when we try to tell someone who is lost that God will destroy their soul if they do not repent and obey God.)
Lot and his wife and daughters left the city as instructed. When they were a safe distance from the city the angels told them to go to the mountains and not to look back. They kept up their trek into the mountains and God brought fire from Heaven and destroyed the cities. Lot’s wife made the mistake of looking back and we are told that she was immediately turned into a pillar of salt. God demands obedience.
