Read Genesis chapter 22

In due time God kept His promise to Abraham and Sarah bore him a son. Then one day a strange event took place. God called to Abraham. God instructed Abraham that he was to take his son Issac to a place where God would show him and there he was to offer Issac as a human sacrifice. Abraham was heart broken but he took Issac and some wood for the fire and he set off. He did not know why God would give him a son and then take that son away from him in such a manner but Abraham would be obedient.Issac asked his father where was the sacrifice. He had been with his father on enough of these times of sacrifice to know that they normally took along with them an animal for the ritual. His father told him that God would provide.

They came to the land where Abraham was to make the offering and Abraham told his servants to wait with the donkeys as Issac and he went up to make the offering. He led Issac up to the place where he was to make the offering. Once they were there he built the altar to make the offering. Then he bound Issac and placed him on the altar. Just as he was ready to kill Issac God stopped he. He told Abraham "See thou do it not." Abraham had passed God’s test. God provided Abraham with a ram to sacrifice. God told Abraham that his faithfulness would be rewarded. His offspring would be more plentiful than the sands of the seashore. Abraham’s offering of Issac was symbolic of God offering Jesus for us!

Abraham’s family was the Jewish nation of the old testament as the children who became the patriarchs of the twelve tribes came through Jacob who was Abraham’s grandson. Every time a Gentile (non-Jewish person) is saved they become part of this family. God’s promise to make Abraham’s offspring uncountable was fulfilled. This helps us to understand how important it is to know and understand the will of God as He makes it known to us today through His word.
