Genesis Part 1, Lesson 3

On the sixth day God created the first man Adam. In Genesis 1:26 we read :"And God said  "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness....." It is often thought that this verse means that man looks like God. This is not what this verse means. It means that man has a spirit as God is a Spirit. John 4:24 says "God is a Spirit and those who worship him must worship Him in spirit and in truth." Man therefore has a spirit or a soul. God saw that the man was alone and said that it was not good for him to be alone so he caused the man, Adam, to go into a deep sleep. He removed one of Adam's ribs and created Eve. God gave Adam the control of a beautiful garden called Eden. He told Adam that he could eat of any tree in the garden except the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil in the center of the garden. He told him that the day he ate of it he would die.

The serpent apparently had the ability to talk at that time because we are told that the serpent tricked Eve. It said in Genesis 3:1 "Yea that God said Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?"  Eve told the serpent what God had said about the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. The serpent said "Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day you eat thereof your eyes shall be opened, and you shall be as gods, knowing good and evil." Eve saw that the fruit of the tree was good and appealing to the eye so she ate and gave some to Adam who also ate. Immediately their eyes were opened and they knew they were naked. Later when God came to the Garden He called for them. They told Him they were ashamed because they knew they were naked. God asked them how they knew they were naked. Had they eaten of the tree of which he told them not to eat. Adam said "The woman you gave me gave me of the tree and I did eat." Eve said the serpent had tricked her and she had eaten.
