Genesis Part 1, Lesson 5
Adam and Eve soon had two sons, Cain and Abel. Cain was a farmer and grew plants. Abel was a shepherd. Now both Cain and Abel made sacrifices to God. Cain sacrificed the first fruits of his fields and Abel made an animal sacrifice. God was pleased with Abel's sacrifice but He was not pleased with Cain's sacrifice. He told Cain that if he did good He would be happy with his sacrifice. Cain had not did good. There is a lesson here for us as well that God wants us to do things His way, not ours.
Cain was jealous that Abel's sacrifice was accepted and his was not so he lured Abel out to the field and killed him. God asked Cain where Abel was later and Cain told Him he did not know. He asked "Am I my brother's keeper?"  At this point God confronted Cain and told him that Abel's blood called out to him from the field. He knew Cain had killed Abel and therefore Cain was to be punished. He was to be exiled and he would be a fugitive for the remainder of his life. Cain told God that he would surely be killed if God made him a fugitive. God placed a special mark on Cain that none should kill him. We are told that Cain went on to marry and to have a family. Adam and Eve had another child whom they named Seth and through Seth's line Christ was born centuries later.
Cain made several mistakes. Let's take a look at them now. The first mistake he made was in offering something to God besides the required blood sacrifice. God tells us today how we are to worship Him and we often try to change that. Cain's next mistake was in getting jealous of his brother who was obeying God instead of changing his ways and following his brother's example. Then he murdered his brother and thought he could hide his sin from God. Isn't it like man to think he can sin and hide it from God? We've all made that mistake. God does not allow our sin to stay hidden. He confronts us with it. When we confess our sin though He is faithful and just and forgives our sin, 1 John 1:9.
