Genesis Part 1, Lesson 6 |
The next account we have in Genesis is that of Noah. Noah was a man who lived after Adam and Eve and was the next great patriarch. A patriarch is the head of a family or clan and in those days was the religious leader of the family. By the time Noah lived man had become wicked and evil. Giants were known in the land due to the breeding practices. The world was utterly wicked and God decided to destroy it due to its wickedness. One man found favor in God's sight. That man was Noah. Genesis 6:9 tells us that "These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God." |

God told Noah He was going to destroy the world and everything in it. Noah was to build an ark of gopher wood and pitch it within and without. He was to build it to the exact specifications God gave him. When it was finished it would be approxiamately 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high. He told Noah where He wanted a window put and that it was to have a huge, heavy door on the side. Noah was to take two of every kind of animal and seven pairs of every clean animal into the ark. These would then repopulate the planet. The ark was to be built with second and third stories in it. When it was finished Noah would be in a desert area with a boat one and one-half times the length of a football field and nearly twice as wide which would stand nearly five stories tall. The people around him would think he was crazy for sure. Nevertheless Noah believed God and set to work building the ark. It would be a job which would require many men working long hours. The wood would have to be cut and formed into planks and this was in an age when they did not have hardware stores! It would be a monumental task but Noah believed God and set to work. It would take many years to complete the task and Noah listened to a lot of ridicule as they went. He did ask God instructed him though. Could we do that? |
