Read Genesis 11:27-12:20
Abram was a man who lived in Ur of the Chaldees. He was a man that the Bible calls "faithful" and his name appears as one of those in the section of Hebrews known as the "Hall of Faith", Hebrews 11. It is there because he was faithful to God. God called Abram to leave Ur and go to the land that God would show him. Abram immediately packed up his belongings and set out for the promised land. Which one of us would not find it difficult to pack and leave the safety and security of home and family to go to a strange land because God told us He would bless us for it. Abram did just that. God promised that he would give Abram land and Abram packed up and left on the basis of God’s promise. He took with him all of his belongings and Lot, his nephew and left Ur for Canaan. We get the impression based on the Biblical account that Abram was probably a wealthy man and one of good position in Ur. That would have made it even harder to go. Abram went however and God blessed him for it. We are told in Genesis 12:7 that Abram passed through the land unto Sichem in the plain of Moreh. The Bible says the Canaanite was in the land. It then says "And the Lord appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there he builded and altar unto the Lord, who appeared unto him."
The Bible says in this scripture that God appeared unto Abram. We are told by Jesus that nobody has seen the Father. Is this a conflict? No it isn’t. Nobody has seen the Father yet untold thousands have seen God in the Person of Jesus Christ when He lived among men. The Lord that Abram seen was the Lord Jesus Christ Who existed with God in eternity and helped with the framing and creation of the world.
This section ends with Abram going to Egypt due to a famine in Canaan. In the next section we will see how Abram does not trust God to protect Sarai his wife from Pharaoh, king of Egypt.
