Genesis chapter 34 is about Israel’s daughter Dinah. She had gone into the fields to see the daughters of the land. Prince Shechem saw her and fell in love with her. He took her and defiled her. Of course this upset Israel but he waited until his sons came in from the fields before doing anything. Prince Shechem’s father Hamor went to Israel to ask for Dinah’s hand for his son. Israel and the men of his household explained to Hamor that they would gladly give them Dinah’s hand in marriage but they could not give her to one who was uncircumcised. They explained that if the men of the city, including Shechem and Hamor, would become circumcised they would gladly give them Dinah. They stated that they would in fact enter a treaty with them and they would allow marriages between themselves and the people of the land. The prince and his father went to the city and called all the men together. They told them that Israel’s daughters were very beautiful. They told them that Israel had agreed to let them intermarry with his household if they would become circumcised as they were. The men became circumcised. On the third day after their circumcisions two of Israel’s sons took their swords and went to the city. They killed all the men because the men could not fight back as they were sore. Israel’s sons said that would teach them to treat their sister like a harlot. Once they had killed all the men they looted the city. They took their sheep, their oxen, their donkeys, and other livestock both in the city and in the fields. They also took their wealth, their children, their wives and all that was in their houses. Israel told Simeon that he had troubled him by making a stink in the land. He was not happy about it. He said the people of the land would retaliate and he did not have the manpower to battle them. Simeon said the men got what they deserved for treating his sister like a common whore.
