Genesis chapter forty-one finds that Joseph had served two years in prison. At the end of the two years Pharaoh had a dream. In his dream he was standing by the river. Seven fat kine came up out of the water and grazed in a meadow. Seven skinny kine followed the seven fat kine. The skinny kine stood with the fat kine. Then the seven skinny kine gobbled up the seven fat kine. The seven skinny kine did not get any fatter as a result of eating the fat ones. Then Pharaoh awoke. When he went back to sleep he had another dream. In this dream he saw seven fat ears of corn. Seven skinny ears of corn gobbled the seven fat ears of corn up. Then he awoke and realized it was a dream. The dream disturbed very badly. The next morning he called his magicians and wise men together. He told them his dream and asked them to interpret it. They could not. Pharaoh was very sad about this. Finally, his butler remembered Joseph and how he had properly interpreted the butler’s dream. The butler told Pharaoh about this and Pharaoh called for Joseph. When Joseph was summoned Pharaoh told him the dream. He told him about the fat and skinny animals and how the skinny ones did not get any fatter after eating the fat ones. He also told him about the ears of corn and how the skinny ears were no bigger after eating the fat ears. Joseph told Pharaoh that the seven fat kine represented seven years. The seven skinny kine were also seven years. The second dream was the same as the first. The seven fat ears were seven years and the seven skinny ears were seven years. The fat one meant that there would be seven years of plenty. At the end of the seven prosperous years there would be seven years of famine. During this time of famine the supplies stored during the seven years of plenty would be devoured. He suggested to Pharaoh that a man be appointed to store supplies during the seven years of plenty. The man should have a group of officers who would gather a fifth of the supplies during the seven years of plenty. Thus they would survive the famine. Joseph was then put in charge.
