Genesis Lesson 17

In this chapter we find that God passes the promise He made to Abraham on to Isaac. He told Issac to stay in the land of Gerar. God told him that if Issac would obey Him He would make Isaac a great nation. Isaac believed God and it was counted on to him as righteousness.

This chapter gives us an account of Isaac telling a lie. There was a famine in the land and he went to the land of King Abimelech. Rebekah was a very beautiful woman and Isaac was afraid that one of the men of Gerar would kill him in order to take Rebekah for his own. Therefore Isaac told everybody that Rebekah was his sister. King Abimelech saw Isaac sporting with Rebekah. This let him know that Rebekah was not Isaac's sister but instead was his wife. He asked Isaac why he had lied. Isaac told him why he did it. Abimelech was angry because he said that somebody may have had sex with Rebekah. Since she was married this would have brought God's wrath upon them. Abimelech then sent out an order that any man who tried anything with Rebekah would be put to death. Isaac stayed in the land of Abimelech and the Phillistines. We are told that he planted a garden which produced 100 times more than the seed he planted.

The next account we have is of a conflict between the servants of Isaac and the local herdsmen. Isaac's servants had dug some watering holes and the local herdsmen claimed the hole. Isaac then had them dig another well and the herdsmen wanted it as well. He moved his herd once more and dug another well. This time the local herdsmen did not want the well.

The last section of this chapter tells us that King Abimelech came to Isaac seeking a peace treaty with him. Isaac gave them the treaty and a feast. Peace was in the land.
