Read Genesis chapter Twenty-Seven.

In this chapter we find that Isaac is very old. He is on the verge of death. Isaac had two sons named Esau and Jacob. Esau was the oldest and therefore the heir to Isaac. His father told him to go hunting and kill his favorite food which was venison. Esau did as he was told. He was not a worthy heir because he sold his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of lentils. Rebekah intended to see that Esau kept his word to Jacob. She prepared a bowl of venison stew and had Jacob take it in to Isaac. Before he went in she put pieces of wool on his hands. Esau’s hands were very hairy and Jacob’s were not. If they were to fool Isaac they had to make Jacob’s hands hairy. Isaac could not see but he would feel his son’s hands. Jacob went in to Isaac’s tent. He gave Isaac the bowl of stew. Then Isaac asked him if he was Esau. He assured Isaac that he was. Isaac recognized the voice as Jacob’s but when he felt his hands he decided that it was indeed Esau. He gave the inheritance to Jacob. Sometime later Esau returned with the venison for his father. When he went into the tent to receive the blessing Isaac told him he had already given the blessing to him. Isaac then knew that he had been deceived. The blessing had already been given to Jacob however. Isaac could not take it back from Jacob. Once it was given it could not be undone. Esau was angry and asked his father if he could not give a double blessing. Could he not give it to both of his sons? Isaac told him this was not possible. Esau hated Jacob because of his deceit. He made plans to kill Jacob when the days of mourning for Isaac were done. Word of his threats came to Rebekah. She called for Jacob and told him to go to her brother’s home and stay long enough for Esau’s anger to subside. Jacob left and went to his uncle’s home to stay for a time.
