Facts for the Trachea

The trachea is the tube that goes from your mouth and nose to your lungs.

Only air passes in and out of the trachea. (That is why it is commonly called the "windpipe")

It is about 4.5 inches long and 1 inch wide.

Your trachea is composed of 20 rings of cartilage.

The lining of the trachea secretes mucus, which removes small particles of matter.

A tracheotomy (the surgical opening of the trachea) may be necessary if the tube is blocked by a foreign object or because of disease.

The trachea is the tube that connects your mouth and nose to your lungs. The inside of the trachea is coated with a ciliated mucous membrane. This membrane is important because it traps and removes small particles, keeping the lungs and air passages clear.
