Taiwan Wildlife
Formosan Serow

Scientic name: Capricornis Crispus Swinhoei Gray
Categorization: Artiodactyla Bovidae
Type locality:Taiwan
Introduction:
Features:
The Formosan serow has a head and trunk ranging 80-114cm in length and a tail that is about 6.5cm in length. Each serow weighs about 25-35kg. Both sexes have a pair of hollow, cone-shaped horns-which they keep their entire lifetime without shedding-that are sharp at the top and curved slightly backwards. Formosan serows are dark brown in color, with some black fur on the back of their necks and light tawny cheeks, throat, and upper neck.
Behavior:
The Formosan serow is herbivorous and feeds primarily on burgeons and tender leaves, especially the tender buds of short coniferous trees such as abies, tsuga, and Juniperus Sqyanata Lamb.var. morrisonicola (Hayata). Strongly territorial, Formosan serows usually move around singly and are most active in the early morning hours and at dusk. They often appear on exposed rocky debris or steep mountain slopes, preferring to stay within the vicinity of slate crags; as their thick hooves enable them to walk agilely on such crags, they will run to such areas to seek refuge from predators.
Habitat:
Formosan serows are an endemic subspecies of Bovidae to Taiwan. They inhabit areas ranging from foothills at low elevations to mountainous regions up to 3500m in elevation, but are most commonly found in virgin coniferous forests.

*Serows eat many different kinds of plants, including firs,  ferns, sprruce and cypress leaves.

*The Formosan Serow belongs to the bovine or the cattlle family.

*It is Taiwan's only native species of this family. It reproduces from March to June. A single young is born. The female might have a second lamb the same year.

*The young goat will leave its mother sometimes between the ages of 6 months and 1 year.

*The breeding age is around 2 to 4 years.

* The Formoan Serow can be expected to live more than 15 years.
My thoughts:
Formosan serows are Taiwan's wildlife. They live in the steep mountain. They belong to Bovidae animals in Taiwan. In this website, we much know them than before. The Formosan serow were heard before I introduce. They are so cute and uncommon to see. We should protect the wildlife and avoid them extinction.
