When the Civil War broke out Sarah enlisted as Franklin Thompson in a volunteer infantry company and worked in a field hospital. After a friend was killed, she took a job as a spy. During the war she dressed herself as a rebel guard, as a female Irish immigrant selling apples and as a black youth called “Ned“. In 1863 she deserted because she suffered from malaria and she was afraid a doctor would recognize that she was a woman. After the war she returned to Canada and married. She died in La Porte, Texas, in 1898. |
