Name Lived Description
Tipton, Billy 1914 - 1989 A jazz musician who passed herself off as a male until her death in 1989.  She had been married for 19 years and had 3 adopted sons.
Dr. Barry, James 1794 - 1865 A British Army Physician who passed herself off as male for 50 years in the British Army until her death.  Rose to the rank of Inspector General of the British Army Medical Department.
Franklin Thompson a.k.a. Sarah Emma Edmonds 1841 - 1898 She ran away when she was young and disguised herself as a man, she later sold bibles.

When the Civil War broke out Sarah enlisted as Franklin Thompson in a volunteer infantry company and worked in a field hospital.  After a friend was killed, she took a job as a spy.

During the war she dressed herself as a rebel guard, as a female Irish immigrant selling apples and as a black youth called “Ned“.  In 1863 she deserted because she suffered from malaria and she was afraid a doctor would recognize that she was a woman.

After the war she returned to Canada and married.  She died in La Porte, Texas, in 1898.
