From Left: Snowball, Magnet, Bear, Tina
Many years ago, humans inhabited every land and nation....or so they thought. There was one nation they didn't discover-- an island just off the coast of Canada on the Pacific side. The only way to get there without a boat is by following a hidden sandbar in the water for about a mile. The canines had claimed this land as their own.
"The humans are going to invade our land," said Magnet to his father, the alpha. "We have to do something!"
"I, along with the rest of the Meadow Pack, am staying right here," said the alpha.
"Then I will find new lands myself!" said Magnet. Most of the other wolves thought Magnet was crazy, but Magnet was determined. He and his close friends, Bear, Tina, and Snowball, set off into the forest to find new land free of humans.
But as soon as they entered the forest, they were met by a huge mother bear. She was not very happy about the wolves stumbling upon her territory, on which she was raising cubs. She roared at the four wolves. They turned to run away from her. But she was too quick. She reached out to pick up Snowball. He bit her paw, and she threw him up against a tree. He was instantly knocked unconscious. Bear and Tina dragged Snowball away, as Magnet held the bear back.
Magnet lunged at the bear. She scratched his side, but shedid not manage to keep Magnet from attacking. He bit her neck and tightened his grip. After only a few seconds, he realized that he was about to kill a mother. He knew that by killing a mother, he was also killing a baby or possibly two. He was too kind-hearted to do that. He let go and ran off to find his friends before the bear had time to get up. He found his friends about at a beach. Tina was licking Snowball's wounds to ease the pain.
Bear came over to Magnet. "I think there is an island down that way."
Magnet looked, and, sure enough, there was an island. It was just far enough that a human couldn't see it, but a wolf with its keen eyesight could. But how to get to it? Magnet looked around for days. He looked into the water one day and noticed a strange sandbar. It was very long, and it started right near shore and went out a long way. How it came to be there, nobody knows. But it was a strange thing to see.
Magnet turned to his friends and said, "Bear and I will go across to the island. I think I found a path. Snowball, you are too hurt to cross with us. It would be far too dangerous for you. Tina, you stay with him. He'll need someone to take care of him."
So Bear and Magnet set off across the sandbar, carefully making sure each step was not the end of the path. Magnet looked across the water and saw several shark fins. (This was, of course, before the Great Shark Migration, but you know all about that, right?) "Watch out for sharks," said Magnet. Bear nodded.
A few minutes later, Magnet head Bear make a sound, as if about to say something. Then there was a splash. Magnet whirled around to find that Bear was gone. A shark had taken him! Magnet frantically searched the water for any signs of Bear. About 30 feet out, he saw Bear's head pop out of the water for a second and then go back under. It didn't come up again.
Magnet then realized there was nothing he could do. He couldn't swim very well, and it would be suicide to take on a huge shark by himself. So he sadly continued on, trying to fight back the tears.
Continuing on by himself across the rest of the sandbar, he saw a few sharks in the distance. He was careful to watch them and make sure they didn't get too close. But a little while later, he could see the shore of the island! His eyes set on the target, he ran straight ahead. He stepped on a sharp rock and tripped. It was not a serious injury, just a small cut on his paw. He continued on. But before he knew it, a shark was right by him! It had smelled the blood from his cut!
The shark tried to bite Magnet, but he took off like a speeding bullet. The shark managed to scrape his leg. It followed Magnet as he ran. Magnet turned back to see if the shark was gone. Suddenly, there was a little turn in the sandbar. Magnet ran right off the edge, and then he found out that the shark wasn't gone. It came up bit Magnet's hurt leg, but this time it didn't let go. Magnet turned and bit the sharks nose. This gave him enough time to get to the surface for air, but soon the shark had his leg again. Magnet thought about all the things he had heard about shark attacks. He remembered one of the nicer elders telling him when he was a pup, "If you get enough force straight on a shark's nose, he will pass out."
So Magnet whirled as fast as he could under the water, and his force stunned the shark, but didn't knock it unconscious. Magnet swam with all his might. The shore was just in sight. He inched closer, but the shark was gaining on him. "I have to do this for Bear!" he told himself. This gave him the extra energy he needed. He scrambled up on the shore and looked back. If he had been a foot further away, the shark would have gotten him! He watched as the shark swam away. He collapsed on the shore, breathing hard and fast. He just lay there for almost an hour, thinking about Bear. He wished he had been there to save his best friend. But then he thought, "Bear wouldn't want me to mope about his death. He would want me to show this island to the rest of the pack."
So that's what Magnet did. First, he searched the island. It was beautiful! There was a cluster of hills in the center, surrounding a valley with a large freshwater pond. Magnet took a long drink from it. Then he noticed a deer across the pond. He followed it, hoping there were more deer. As he looked around the island, he found there were a lot of prey animals! There were plenty of rabbits, deer, moose, and squirrels. Magnet caught a rabbit for his dinner.
After staying on the island for about a week, his leg was healed. He ran across the sandbar, and he didn't meet any sharks. When he came back, Tina and Snowball were waiting for him. "What took you so long?" asked Snowball, excited to see Magnet. "But where's Bear?" asked Tina.
Magnet told them the whole story. He was sad about Bear, but he was excited about the island, which was perfect for the pack! So he, Snowball, and Tina set off to bring the pack to the island.
When the pack found out, they loved the island. They wanted to call it Magnet Island, but Magnet, being the humble and loving wolf that he was, wanted to call it Bear's Island as a memorial to Bear, who was "the bravest wolf ever known" according to Magnet. Finally, they agreed to call it Meadow Heights, named after the pack. They leved there happily while Magnet was their alpha. (They made him alpha, since he found the island.)
But after Magnet died, everything changed. The pack members, who remained loyal to Magnet, changed the name of the pack to Magnet's Meadow Pack, though he was too humble to name the pack after himself. Eventually, some of the dogs and wolf-dogs of the pack thought they were being treated unfairly, so they started the Dogland Pack. A beta named Cona disagreed with the alpha after Magnet, so she started the Cona Pack. The pack then had sort of a civil war, though there was no actual fighting. The nicer wolves thought there was too much violence, and the darker ones thought there wasn't enough. The cheerful ones started the Sunshine Pack, and the darker ones started the Dark Forest Pack. However, there were still many that remained loyal to the Magnet's Meadow Pack.
The humans have still never found Meadow Heights, and the sharks have all migrated, leaving a safe path to the island. They welcome new canines to the island, but keep the island free of humans and other animals who are not canines or prey animals. Though much has changed, Magnet's legend never fades.
