Talk About Split Personalities
"So what is this big surprise?" asked Robotnik as Packbell led him and Metal Sonic into his main laboratory that was set up for him. Robotnik had built the human-like android only two weeks after the loss of the Death Egg, mainly to get his mind off of losing his masterpiece, but also to have a robot with brains. While Metal Sonic was strong, cunning, and deadly, he wasn't exactly the sharpest robot Robotnik had created in his years.
"I hope it is not like the last one," grumbled Metal Sonic, just barely audible. The last time Packbell had a surprise for Robotnik, he had implanted Metal Sonic with an experimental intelligence booster chip that had left the Mecha bot utterly stupefied for almost a week, being totally useless in the defense of Robotropolis. Not to mention the numerous dents he had inflicted to his hull after repeatedly crashing into walls. It had taken him over two days of constant repair to get his hull back into shape.
"Not in the least," said Packbell as he opened the door to his lab. Inside were dozens of computer terminals, each one with a different function. A few robot parts were lying on a nearby table. Metal Sonic shuddered inwardly as he recognized one of the robotic arms lying on the table as a piece of Mecha bot 1, also known as Silver Sonic. Mecha had done some research trying to find out just what Mecha bot 1 was and had found the files telling about his construction and his termination at the hands of Sonic. He had recorded all the files still leftover from Silver Sonic's memory that was on the main computer's hard drive so that he wouldn't make the same mistakes as his predecessor.
"Here we go," said Packbell as he typed in a few commands into one of the computers. A hidden panel on the wall whooshed open and a small ray gun came out on a hook. Packbell took it off the hook and held it up for the two observers to see.
"I guess we can use that to weld a couple of Swatbots back together," said Metal Sonic sarcastically. Packbell gave him a glare before handing the weapon to Robotnik, who began to study the device.
"This is no ordinary ray gun. Anyone who is hit with the ray of this gun will have their personalities spilt into two separate beings. One of them being their good personality, the other their evil personality. I call it the Persona Ray," explained Packbell. Robotnik looked confused as Packbell explained the properties of the gun.
"And this will do us any good how?" he asked. Packbell took the Persona Ray from Robotnik.
"A good example would be Sonic. If he were to be hit with the Persona Ray, we would have two Sonics, one being good…" said Packbell. Robotnik smiled as he finished the thought.
"The other being evil," said Robotnik.
"Exactly," said Packbell with a smile. Metal Sonic crossed his arms over his chest.
"Brilliant, but just one problem. How do we actually hit the hedgehog with the ray? And even if we succeed in doing so, how do we know that the evil side of Sonic won't try and kill us?" asked Metal Sonic.
"Simple," said Packbell as he handed the Persona Ray to Metal Sonic. "You will shoot the other members of the Freedom Fighters they send on their next raid. I made sure to configure the Persona Ray so that the evil side of any victim will obey Robotnik first, me second, and you third. You can then use the evil versions to lure Sonic into a trap where you can then hit him with the ray."
"I still say it won't work, but I'll go along with it," said Metal Sonic as he opened a compartment in his left arm and placed the Persona Ray inside it.
**********
"Watch out!" cried Knuckles as he knocked Sally down just before a hover-unit dive-bombed them from above. It was now a week later, and the Freedom Fighters were making a raid to try and get a part they needed for the De-Roboticizer. Unfortunately for them, the factory where the part was being made in was heavily guarded, and they had set off an alarm before they had even entered the building. Sonic was now in the process of trying to lead the hover-units and Swatbots away while Silver, Tails, Knuckles, and Sally tried to get out of the city.
"Big mistake," said Silver as he took to the air, flying after the hover-unit. He fired his laser cannon at the hover-unit, scoring a hit on its fuel tank. The hovercraft caught fire quickly, then exploded in a shower of flaming shrapnel. "They just never learn."
"And neither do you, Silver," said a voice from above. Silver looked up just in time to see the feet of Metal Sonic slam into his face, knocking him to the ground. "Now to see if this thing really works or not." Mecha pulled the Persona Ray from the compartment in his arm and pointed it at Silver.
"Say cheese," said Metal Sonic as he fired the Persona Ray. Silver was almost to his feet when he felt something hit him in the back. It didn't hurt, but it felt strange. Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through his head, causing him to cry out as his hands grasp his head. While his whole body may have been made of metal, the mind that inhabited it was not. And right now, Silver could feel his mind coming apart at the seams. He fell to the ground; his mental consciousness lost as the effects of the Persona Ray took hold. Metal Sonic watched the motionless body, waiting to see what would happen, but nothing did.
"Worthless piece of junk. Must not work on robots," he said as he shook his head. He then heard the sound of laser cannons being fired in the distance. He looked over to see Sonic race by with four hover-units on his tail, firing like crazy as they tried to tag him. "Stupid hover-units. They couldn't hit the side of a barn with a tank," mumbled Metal Sonic.
"Maybe not, but I can," said a voice. Mecha whipped his head around just in time to get punched in the face by Silver, who had regained consciousness in the short time Metal Sonic had forgotten about him. Metal Sonic went flying back into the side of a building, knocking chunks of the wall off as he impacted with it. "Say hello to Robotnik for me," said Silver as he flew off, leaving Metal Sonic behind to reset his systems.
"I hate that robot!" shouted Metal Sonic as he rebalanced his systems enough to stand back up. He looked over in the direction that Silver had gone. He debated going after the robot, but he knew that it would be a waste of time. He turned to leave when a bright light flashed behind him. Mecha turned around and watched in awe as the light started to dim and take on a shape. At first, the light looked like nothing except for a blob. Then it started to turn into something with curves on its back. As it changed, Metal Sonic suddenly realized what it was. Then the light disappeared completely, leaving in its place an exact twin of Silver. His pupils lit up as he surveyed his surroundings. Then he took off into the air.
"Free at last!" cried Silver as he did somersaults in the air before landing next to an awe struck Metal Sonic and shaking his claws. "I can't thank you enough! I've been trapped in that mind for so long now, I can't even remember the last time I've seen the world!" Metal Sonic pulled his claws out of Silver's hand.
"What are you talking about?" asked Metal Sonic, still trying to understand what was going on. Silver looked over at Metal Sonic and gave him a smirk.
"You know, you're sure are slow for being the one who set me free," said Silver. "I'm the side of Silver that he hid away in his mind. More or less, I am the dark feelings of Silver that have taken a physical form."
"So you’re his evil side? You don't look evil to me," said Metal Sonic, looking at Silver in disbelief. Silver gave an evil grin.
"Oh really? Then I'll prove myself by helping you catch that overconfident hedgehog," said Silver, his pupils flashing over to the crimson red color they had been when he was Mecha-Sonic.
"Sounds like I might have been mistaken about you, Silver," said Metal Sonic.
"You certainly did," said Silver as he shot Metal Sonic in the foot with his laser cannon. Metal Sonic fell to the ground in pain as he grabbed his foot. While the laser didn’t penetrate his armor, it still singed his hull, making it smoke as a layer of paint smoldered. "Don't ever do it again. Consider yourself lucky. I had my laser set to stun. If it was at kill, there would be a hole in your foot. And the name's Gamma."
"Gamma? Why Gamma?" asked Metal Sonic as he slowly stood back up, not wanting to anger the obviously aggressive robot. Gamma-Silver looked over at Mecha threateningly before he answered.
"Gamma is a Greek letter from Earth. I happen to like the way that letter sounds to me, and since there is another one of myself out there, I shouldn't go by Silver. Now let's go and free the rest of my friends," said Gamma-Silver as he started to walk off. Metal Sonic shook his head as he followed.
"I've got a bad feeling this whole plan's going to backfire," he thought to himself. Not only did Gamma-Silver have the gale to give him orders, he had also shot him in the foot, something that the Persona Ray's programming should have stopped.
**********
"Hey Knuckles. We lost Silver," said Tails as he landed next to Knuckles and Sally in an alley. They both looked back to see that indeed, the robotic hedgehog was no longer with them.
"Where did he go?" asked Sally.
"Nowhere, he's just having some issues with his better half," said a voice. The three Mobians looked up just in time to see Metal Sonic fire the Persona Ray at them. They cringed as the beam hit them. While they felt no physical pain from the gun, their minds felt like they were being ripped apart. They held their heads as the Persona Ray finished firing, then they felt to the ground, knocked out. Metal Sonic then activated his cloaking device, wavering out of sight. He watched them as they woke up and shook their heads.
"What just happened?" asked Sally as she looked up. "I could have sworn that I saw Metal Sonic standing up on that building."
"I know what you mean," said Knuckles as he put a hand to his head. "Man, do I have a headache."
"Tell me about it," said Tails, who was holding his head as well. Just then, Silver flew around the corner.
"There you guys are! I've been looking all over for you," he cried as he landed next to them. He then noticed their tired looking faces. "You guys okay?"
"Yeah, just a little tired I guess," said Sally. She shook off the sudden tiredness and looked out of the alley. "It's clear. We'd better take this good luck while we can. Let's go and find Sonic." The four of them ran out of the alley and down the street. Up on the building, Metal Sonic wavered back into sight as Gamma-Silver walked up next to him.
"Excellent. Now all we need is that hedgehog," said Gamma-Silver as he flew down into the alley. Metal Sonic followed as three white lights flashed into existence. Just like before, they had only the forms of blobs as they started the transformation, but then they started to take on characteristics. One of them grew several long dreadlocks down the backside of its body. Another sprouted two tails from its lower back half. The third one grew hair that curled around to the front of its head. Then the lights vanished, leaving in their places exact duplicates of Knuckles, Tails, and Sally.
"Boy does it feel good to be out of that cramped place. There is just too much imagination in that kid's head," said Tails as he stretched.
"At least you've got ideas to keep you company. That echidna's mind has plenty of free parking from never having contact with the rest of the world," said Knuckles, giving Tails a frown.
"You two have it easy. Try being the smart one for a while and see just how bad your lives are," said Sally, brushing her hair out of her eyes.
"Welcome," said Gamma-Silver. The other copies looked over at Gamma-Silver and gave a smile. "I trust you are ready for some fun?"
"You bet, Silver," said Knuckles. Gamma-Silver held up a finger and shook it.
"Actually, call me Gamma," said Gamma-Silver. "In fact, I think that since we each have a duplicate of ourselves running around out there somewhere, we should call ourselves by Greek letters, at least until we dispose of our better halves so that we don’t get confused." Metal Sonic watched this unfold in front of him and started to regret ever agreeing to this. These personalities had minds of their own, and no amount of programming from the Persona Ray seemed to control them.
"Sounds good to me. From now on, just call me Epsilon," said Sally, giving Gamma-Silver a half lid glance.
"Nice choice, Epsilon," said Gamma-Silver.
"Call me Delta," said Knuckles.
"And I'll go by Beta from now on," said Tails.
"Excellent. We have everyone we need now except for one person. The hedgehog's evil side," said Gamma-Silver.
"Yes, we must retrieve our leader from his imprisonment," said Beta-Tails. Metal Sonic had had enough by now. He walked up to Gamma-Silver and looked him in his crimson pupils.
"What do you mean, 'retrieve our leader from his imprisonment'?" asked Metal Sonic. Gamma-Silver smiled at Mecha.
"For years now, we have been trapped in the subconscious's of Silver’s and the others minds. We each have communicated to each other through their dreams, since during dreams, minds can drift to other planes of existence. We each have had different stories about what we thought the outside world looked like ever since we had been tossed aside in favor of our good counterparts," said Gamma-Silver.
"Then you set us free. Since this plane is made of matter and not thoughts, we needed a form to inhabit. Luckily, we were able take on the forms of the people whose mind we come from by taking a sample of their DNA and cloning their bodies," said Epsilon-Sally.
"And now that we’re out, we no longer have boundaries like before," said Beta-Tails.
"And that means that you are not required for the rest of our plan," said Delta-Knuckles. Metal Sonic looked over at Delta-Knuckles, giving him a confused glare.
"What do you…" started Metal Sonic before Gamma-Silver slammed both of his fists down on top of Mecha’s head, knocking him to the ground. Gamma-Silver then extended his claws from his fingers and slashed the back of Metal Sonic’s engine right where the main fuel line was located. Metal Sonic thrashed violently as fuel sprayed everywhere from his ruptured line. He remained like this for about thirty seconds until all the fuel had drained from his systems. The last thing Metal Sonic saw before his main power failed was the four personalities looking down at him, each one supporting an evil grin.
**********
Sonic jumped over a small pile of garbage as he raced down a wide street, two hover-units still in pursuit. He had lost one after it had crashed into a walkway in-between two buildings, and the other one had stopped after an obviously misguided Swatbot had shot it in the back, probably trying to hit Sonic.
"Man, don't these guys ever give up?" asked Sonic as he raced around a corner, the units following in his wake. The next thing he knew, a laser blast flew over his head and hit the front hover-unit head-on, breaking the glass windshield to pieces and blowing the head off the Swatbot piloting it. The unit sluggishly fell to the left and down, the back end slamming into the front end of the second unit, causing both of them to crash into the ground, exploding into tons of flaming metal scrapes.
"That was a close one," said Silver as he landed next to Sonic.
"You can say that again," said Sonic. Sally, Knuckles, and Tails ran up to the two of them.
"Are you okay?" asked Sally. Sonic gave her a thumbs up.
"You sure?" asked Tails.
"Yeah. This hedgehog’s been shaken up worse than this before, little buddy," said Sonic.
"Good. Then you won’t mind if I do this," said Knuckles as he whipped out the Persona Ray from behind his back and fired, hitting Sonic square in the chest.
"What the…!?" was all Sonic got out before the painful mind effects of the Persona Ray took effect. Sonic fell to the ground; his head feeling like it was splitting into two. He looked up to see Silver standing over him.
"Don’t worry. You will not be harmed physically. We just want a piece of your mind," said Silver. As Sonic tried to fight off the Persona Ray’s effects, he noticed that Silver’s eyes were not yellow, but a crimson red.
"You’re…not…Silver…," said Sonic. Gamma-Silver smiled down at Sonic.
"Very perceptive. In a way, I am Silver. Just not the Silver you know. I am Gamma," said Gamma-Silver as Sonic passed out. Gamma-Silver looked up at the others as they heard the sound of laser blasts off in the distance. "Sounds like our better halves are coming. Let’s go. Our Sonic won’t arrive for a little bit. Until then, let’s not let ourselves be known." The others nodded in agreement. Delta-Knuckles dug his knuckle spikes into a nearby building and rapidly climbed up its side, ducking into an open window. Beta-Tails took Epsilon-Sally’s hand and flew up to the top of the same building, Gamma-Silver following.
"Sonic!" cried Sally’s voice as she came running around the same corner Sonic had earlier. Knuckles and Tails were just behind her. As they rounded the corner, several laser blasts shot past the corner. Silver then rounded the corner, flying about ten feet off the ground and firing his laser cannon at the hover-units chasing them. Sally ran up to Sonic’s motionless form. She knelt down next to him just as he started to wake up. "Sonic! Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I guess," said Sonic, putting a hand to his head as he stood up. "But I’ve got one killer headache." Silver fired a few more shots before abandoning his position as he returned to the others.
"We’d better get out of here," said Silver as he flew by overhead, heading towards the city limits.
"Get a grip everyone," said Sonic as the others formed a line behind him. He then took off just as the hover-units rounded the corner, firing at them. But Sonic was already too far out in front for them to catch up. After a few more useless shots, they abandoned the chase and started back towards the factory. Above them, Gamma-Silver and the others watched the units leave.
"Well, that was sure boring," said Gamma-Silver as he flew down to the ground.
"You said it," said Delta-Knuckles as he glided down next to him.
"You’d think that at least one of those idiotic Swatbots could at least hit one of them sometime!" cried Beta-Tails. Epsilon-Sally just nodded in agreement.
"Well, now what?" asked Delta-Knuckles. Gamma-Silver pointed towards the spot were Sonic had been just a minute ago.
"Watch," said Gamma-Silver. Suddenly, a bright white light flashed in the exact spot Gamma-Silver had indicated. "And you will see." The light started out as the normal blob, then started to change shape, its back sprouting curved edges. When the light died down, an exact copy of Sonic stood in its place.
"Good to see you Sonic," said Gamma-Silver as he walked up and placed his hand on Sonic’s shoulder. Sonic looked up into Gamma-Silver’s crimson eyes and gave a smile. There was one noticeable feature about Sonic’s evil side that wasn’t noticeable in the other three that came from the living bodies. His eyes had a bright red tone to them instead of the real Sonic’s emerald green colored eyes.
"Good to be here Silver," said Sonic.
"Actually, call me Gamma," said Gamma-Silver.
"Adopted a new name while I was gone?" asked Sonic. Beta-Tails smiled.
"Just until we get rid of our good counterparts. It makes sure that we don’t get confused during an intermixing of our sides. Silver took the name Gamma, I took the name Beta, Sally took Epsilon, and Knuckles took Delta," said Beta-Tails.
"Greek letters, eh? The new names have kind of a ruling ring to them, if you know what I mean," said Sonic with a smile. "And since this will be the beginning of a new era, I think it would be appropriate if I go by Alpha from now on."
"Sounds like a winner to me," said Gamma-Silver. Alpha-Sonic looked over towards the Robotropolis Command Center.
"And that will be the first place we start with," said Alpha-Sonic. He then looked back at Gamma-Silver. "You did take care of Mecha bot 2, did you not?" Gamma-Silver smiled as he extended his claws, still damp with Mecha’s fuel.
"He’s as lifeless as road kill," said Gamma-Silver.
"Excellent," said Alpha-Sonic, smiling as he looked up at. "Then the time has come for us to unleash our evil upon this planet!"
**********
"So how exactly do we get in there?" asked Delta-Knuckles as he and the other evil personalities stood behind a warehouse about a block and a half south of the Command Center. Alpha-Sonic gave a smirk.
"The same way our good sides do, with just a bit more destruction added into the mix," said Alpha-Sonic as he got down on his hands and knees and started to draw a crude map in the polluted soil. "Okay, here's what we'll do. Gamma and I will make a frontal assault while Delta, Beta, and Epsilon sneak in and take the control center. First we'll…"
**********
Robotnik paced back and forth in the Command Center's control room. It had been almost an hour since Metal Sonic had left with the Persona Ray and about forty-five minutes since it was reported that Sonic and the other Freedom Fighters had left the city. Something was wrong, and both Robotnik and Packbell knew it. Metal Sonic wasn't one to go missing in the city for more than about ten minutes.
"That stupid robot," mumbled Robotnik under his breath. "Probably blasted himself with that ray gun." Suddenly, the warning klaxons started to blare loudly, causing Packbell, who was seated right next to one of the sirens, to jump in surprise and fall to the floor.
"What in the world!?" he cried as he stood back up. Robotnik wasn't paying any attention to the android as he brought up the security monitors. It lit up with a flash, projecting an image that neither one of them expected to see. It showed Sonic and Silver taking apart the Swatbots guarding the first floor of the complex. Packbell looked over at Robotnik with a confused look on his face. "I thought you said that they left the city?"
"That's what the perimeter Swatbots reported. Stupid machines. They never were all that reliable," said Robotnik.
**********
"Ha! Is that all you guys have?" asked Alpha-Sonic as he spindashed into another Swatbot, crushing its chest armor half way into its body. "I've seen toasters tougher than you!" Alpha-Sonic then performed a back flip as a Securitybot rounded the corner, its laser cannon blasting away at him. Gamma-Silver smirked as he dove towards the Securitybot, his metallic claws extended. The Securitybot looked up as its sensors picked up Gamma-Silver's approach, only to have Gamma-Silver fly under its left side and slice its leg in half, causing the massive machine to topple to the ground.
"Pathetic," mumbled Gamma-Silver as he came to a hover ten feet further down the corridor.
"Tell me about it," said Alpha-Sonic as he looked up at his companion. "Makes me wonder why our better halves never tried doing this."
"They're just too cautious to try something like this," said Gamma-Silver as he landed next to Alpha-Sonic.
**********
"Oww! Dang it!" shouted Epsilon-Sally as her head hit the roof of the air duct she, Beta-Tails, and Delta-Knuckles were using to enter the building. "Whose bright idea was it to go in through here anyway?"
"Yours," said both Beta-Tails and Delta-Knuckles together. The three of them ducked under an overhanging pipe as they continued their trek through the air duct system.
"So what's the plan once we find the control room?" asked Delta-Knuckle as they turned another one of the duct's many twisting corners.
"What else? Attack them, then most likely…kill them," said Beta-Tails. Delta-Knuckles' eyes narrowed and his mouth twisted into an evil grin.
"Works for me," said Delta-Knuckles as Epsilon-Sally held up her hand as she stopped over a grating in the duct.
"Hold up," she whispered as she waved them over to the grate. Delta-Knuckles and Beta-Tails joined Epsilon, both of them gazing down into the control room below. Robotnik was watching the video monitors as Alpha-Sonic and Gamma-Silver broke through the third floor's defensives. Packbell was standing off to the side, watching the two intruders on the monitors with interest. "Okay. On three. One…Two…Three!"
Epsilon-Sally kicked the grating out from underneath the three of them, Robotnik and Packbell both turning at the sound of the metal grate clanging against the floor.
"What is the meaning of this!?" shouted Robotnik as the three fake Mobians dropped from the air duct.
"The meaning of this is that we are taking over your job," said Epsilon-Sally. Robotnik's confusion was evident on his face as he turned towards Packbell, who also seemed just as confused as he was.
"What are you babbling about?" asked Robotnik as he slowly reached over towards the alarm.
"It's like this," said Beta-Tails as he walked over and jumped into Robotnik's command chair. "We've been trapped for years behind a veil of goodness, and now that we are out, we have things planned for this world. Things that not even you would have thought of doing to it."
"Wait a sec," said Packbell as the reality of what was going on clicked in his artificial intelligence. "You're not the real Freedom Fighters. You're their evil personalities!"
"Ding ding ding. What do we have for him Johnny?" said Delta-Knuckles in a mock announcer's voice.
"Figures you'd be as cocky as your other half," said Robotnik. Delta-Knuckles flashed him a glare.
"Don't push me tubby," said Delta-Knuckles. Robotnik smiled as he placed his hand over the alarm.
"On the contrary," said Robotnik as he pushed the alarm, sirens starting to blare in the room, causing the three personalities to look up suddenly at the flashing lights. "Don't push me." Six Swatbots ran into the room from two side entrances, each one carrying a laser rifle in their arms. But before they could even raise them up high enough to take aim, Alpha-Sonic and Gamma-Silver burst through the main entrance, Alpha-Sonic spindashing off the heads of three Swatbots like a pinball, while Gamma-Silver blasted the other three in the chest with his laser cannon. Delta-Knuckles smirked as he crossed his arms over his chest.
"You were saying?" asked Delta-Knuckles. Robotnik and Packbell both started to back up towards the glass window that looked out towards the entire east side of the city.
**********
A few streets away, a faint mechanical hum was emitting from a certain blue robot. Suddenly, Metal Sonic's pupils flickered a few times, then returned with a flash. He slowly sat upright, placing his clawed hand on his head.
"Blasted personalities," mumbled Metal Sonic as he stood up. "That is the last time I ever use any invention of that android." Metal Sonic reached behind his back and felt the ruptured fuel line that Gamma had slashed open. Luckily, Robotnik had built his Telsa coil to also function as a back-up generator in case he ever lost all his main power. He sighed as he ran the diagnostics check on his back-up power, which showed him that it only had enough power for a few minutes flight before he would have to land and recharge the coil. Oh well, it'd be enough to find those blasted fakes and kill them. Suddenly, his internal warning message came to life. That wasn't good. It was only supposed to go off if the Command Center was under assault. Not wasting any time, he ignited his engine and took off in the direction of the Command Center.
**********
"Now there are one of two options open to us," said Alpha-Sonic as he paced back and forth in front of Robotnik and Packbell. "One, we could toss you into one of the prison cells somewhere in the city, or we can kill you."
"I prefer killing them," said Beta-Tails.
"Definitely," said Delta-Knuckles. Alpha-Sonic smiled as he looked over at Robotnik and Packbell.
"Exactly what I was thinking," said Alpha-Sonic. Next to him, Gamma-Silver extended his claws. Robotnik and Packbell back up into the glass panels.
"So now what?" whispered Robotnik to Packbell.
"There's only one thing to do…jump," whispered Packbell. Robotnik nodded. Gamma-Silver advanced on them, raising his claws to strike. Suddenly, Packbell swung a fist back and slammed it into the glass window, shattering it. Gamma-Silver stopped his approach, momentarily taken off-guard by the sudden action, giving Robotnik and Packbell the few seconds they needed to leap from the window.
**********
Metal Sonic had just barely become airborne when he saw something fly out of the Command Center's main viewing windows. Not waiting to see what it was, he took off full speed towards the falling objects. As he grew closer, he realized it was Packbell and Robotnik. Pushing the power of his Telsa coil to the limit, he shot forward even faster. Robotnik and Packbell were within thirty feet of the ground when they were suddenly caught by Metal Sonic, who lowered them softly to the ground.
"I take it you two have met our new 'friends'," said Metal Sonic, looking back up towards the top of the Command Center.
"Yes. Those personalities have more evil in them than even I would have thought possible," said Robotnik.
"It seems that the Persona Ray worked, but not in the way I built it to," said Packbell. Metal Sonic shook his fists in frustration.
"Of course not you idiot! They are totally out of control!" cried Metal Sonic.
"Is there anything we can do to fix this?" asked Robotnik. Packbell stroked his chin as he went into deep thought.
"There might be a way to put them back into their owner's mind, but I would have to modify the Persona Ray, and they would have to be in contact with their good halves," said Packbell.
"Unfortunately, I am not at full power right now. That blasted Gamma cut my main fuel line," said Metal Sonic, his red pupils flashing bright for a second.
"Well, there is one group we could turn to…" started Packbell.
"No!" cried Robotnik, stopping Packbell before he could say who it was. "I will never form an alliance with them!"
"Don't think of it as an alliance. It is merely a truce until this problem is fixed," said Packbell.
"I will not join forces with my rival to fix what you caused," said Metal Sonic, pointing a claw at Packbell. Robotnik sighed as he realized that Packbell was right. He had no way of communicating with any of his bases, and Gamma-Silver, Beta-Tails, and Delta-Knuckles would probably reprogram all the Swatbots and Securitybots before he could rally them for battle.
"No, Packbell's right…We have no choice," said Robotnik. "But how do we contact them?"
"Leave that to me," said Packbell. Metal Sonic gave a huff.
"Yeah, like that has really done us any good lately," said Metal Sonic.
**********
One month later, news that a new set of people were running Robotropolis, going by the name of the Council of Five, had spread throughout most of Northern Mobius. While the Freedom Fighters had tried many attempts to find out who this "Council of Five" was made up of, they had turned up no leads. Even Sir Charles and Lily had come up empty handed, despite their best attempts. Not only that, but it seemed that they always knew where and when they were going to strike the city. Today was no different, as they returned having barely escaped a trap set for them at their latest target site, a secret project that had started within the last three weeks and was nearing completion.
"I just don't get it," said Sally as she sat at the table in the hut that served as sort of a community center. "It's like this Council of Five think exactly like us."
"I know. It's really starting to freak me out," said Knuckles.
"They've even been able to pull a couple on me, and that isn't very easy to do," said Sonic, who had just barely escaped from ten strategically placed Securitybots, each one waiting for him in the places he had planned to loss them.
"It's like they can read our minds," said Silver.
"I know," said Tails as he brought a plate of chili dogs and plain hotdogs over to the group. Sonic and Tails both took a chili dog, Knuckles and Sally each taking a hotdog.
"So what do we do about it?" asked Sonic. Sally sighed and took Nicole off her boot.
"Nicole, boot up holographic map of Robotropolis," said Sally as the tiny computer brought up a display of Robotropolis' city layout. But before Sally could give the computer another command, Nicole started to beep rapidly.
"Incoming message, Sally," said Nicole. Sally looked up from Nicole, surprise evident on her face. The other Freedom Fighters in the north weren't supposed to check in for another two weeks, and the Southern Freedom Fighter groups were busy trying to set up good relations with the human colonies and cities in the south. One of them they were hoping to get in good with was a well developed city called Emerald City, which they didn't know would be a place of major importance in the future.
"Track incoming message," said Sally. Nicole beeped a few more times.
"Unable to identify sender or place of origin," said Nicole. Sally looked over at the others.
"What do you guys think?" asked Sally. Knuckles merely shrugged, as did Tails.
"I say see who it is. Might be a new Freedom Fighter group wanting to join the cause," said Sonic.
"Maybe…," said Sally.
"Well, let's find out," said Silver. Sally nodded and pressed a button on the small computer. A holographic screen appeared in front of them, but as the static cleared, they gasped as they saw who was on the other end.
"Robotnik!" cried Sonic, his face turning into a frown as he gritted his teeth.
"Do not threat, Sonic. I am not tracing this transmission," said Robotnik. While Robotnik still had his trademark mustache, he also had grown a small beard and was noticeably thinner than normal.
"Then what do you want?" asked Sonic.
"I wish to form an official truce between myself and the Freedom Fighters," said Robotnik.
"You have got to be out of your mind!" cried Sonic.
"Oh, I wish I were," said Robotnik. "But I'm not. I'm sure you'd want to know how this so called 'Council of Five' is always one step ahead of you."
"How do you know about that?" asked Sonic.
"Because I am the one that made the device for bring them to life," said Packbell as he walked into the camera's viewpoint.
"What do you mean?" asked Silver. Packbell spent the next fifteen minutes filling the Freedom Fighters in on just who the Council of Five was made up of, and their plan on how to get rid of them.
"So is it a deal?" asked Robotnik.
"As much as I hate to admit it, this is our best shot to put this Council of Five out of business and get our personalities back in one piece," said Sally. "A truce it is."
"Excellent. Here's the plan I have in mind," said Robotnik.

"How's that targeting lens coming?" asked Alpha-Sonic. He now stood at the base of a giant telescope-like device. Above him, numerous Workerbots labored at putting the finishing touches to the machine.
"Just…about…got it," said Beta-Tails as he put the targeting lens in place. "There. She's ready to go.
"Ha. Now the world will know the true power of evil," said Alpha-Sonic. Gamma-Silver walked up to the control panel and started to type in commands. The machine came to life with a hum as power start to build up in the machine's core.
"In just thirty minutes, the entire planet of Mobius will fall to evil," said Gamma-Silver as he looked up from the control panel.
"Excellent. Now to prepare…," started Alpha-Sonic before warning klaxons started to blare throughout the complex. "What is that?"
"I'll go check it out," said Gamma-Silver, running out of the warehouse that housed the project.
**********
Outside, the real Silver, along with Metal Sonic, continued to dive in and out of the sea of guards outside the warehouse, attacking them while at the same time trying not to be shot themselves. Further on back, Knuckles and Sally were providing cover fire for Sonic as he spindashed off of a Swatbot, only to be shot at by over a dozen Securitybots. Robotnik and Packbell were also providing cover fire for Sonic, but only after having to be reminded by Sally that they were on the terms of a truce.
"This is ridiculous!" cried Sonic as he dodged another laser blast.
"And it just got worse!" cried the voice of Silver. Sonic looked up to see Gamma-Silver come flying at him, claws extended.
"What the!?" cried Sonic as he dove to the ground, not realizing that Gamma-Silver wasn't the real Silver. Sonic just barely missing Gamma-Silver's slash as Gamma-Silver slowed and landed behind Sonic.
"Nice moves, hedgehog," said Gamma-Silver.
"Not to bad yourself. You must be the one that everybody’s been calling Gamma," said Sonic.
"Correct," said Gamma-Silver, raising his laser cannon towards Sonic. "Too bad we didn't get to know each other better." Gamma-Silver fired his cannon as Sonic leaped into the air, barely avoiding the shot. Sonic curled up into a spindash and slammed into Gamma-Silver's chest plate, knocking the robotic hedgehog to the ground.
"Now!" cried Sonic. Silver dove down and body slammed Gamma-Silver, pinning him to the ground. "Packbell!" Packbell rose from his position and fired the modified Persona Ray, hitting both robot hedgehogs.
"No! I won't go back! Not again!" cried Gamma as he flashed into a blob of light. Silver then went limp as the blob of white light was absorbed into his body. After about ten seconds, Silver's pupils flickered back on. Sonic ran over and picked him up, running behind a pile of trash.
"You okay?" asked Sonic. Silver shook his head, then nodded.
"Yeah. I just feel kind of funny," said Silver.
**********
Another explosion sounded from outside the warehouse, causing Beta-Tails to jump.
"Where is Gamma? He should have reported in by now," said Alpha-Sonic.
"If I had to guess, I'd say our better halves have found out about us and our little project," said Epsilon.
"Then I think we'd better take care of them once and for all," said Delta-Knuckles, cracking his knuckles. "I've been itching to give myself a good beating."
"Very well. I will join you shortly," said Alpha-Sonic. The other three personalities nodded and ran out of the warehouse.
"Personalities incoming," said Metal Sonic into his communicator.
"Copy that. Which ones?" asked Sally.
"Looks like Epsilon, Delta, and Beta," said Metal Sonic.
"Great," said Sally. She then turned to Knuckles and Tails. "Looks like it's our turn." Both of them nodded as they ran around to the other side of the trash pile.
"So now what?" asked Sonic as Metal Sonic landed next to him.
"Now we just have to wait until your friends can come into contact with their evil sides," said Metal Sonic. Even as they said this, Sally and the others were sneaking up on their evil halves, who had no clue that they were even near the battle.
"So where are they?" asked Epsilon-Sally.
"I don't know," said Delta-Knuckles.
"I'll find them," said Beta-Tails, twirling his twin tails and taking off into the air. Behind Epsilon-Sally and Delta-Knuckles, Sally and Knuckles were climbing the pile of trash that they standing in front of. Tails was waiting in the shadows of a nearby building for the right moment to tackle Beta-Tails.
"I don't see anything," said Epsilon-Sally, still searching the smoking battlegrounds left from the attack. A few Swatbots were still standing, but they were too disorientated to even notice that there were still life signs all around them.
"I don't either," said Delta-Knuckles.
"Bonzi!" cried Knuckles as he and Sally leapt from the top of the trash pile. Both Epsilon-Sally and Delta-Knuckles looked up to see their good doubles come flying at them. The four of them went tumbling to the ground as Sally and Knuckles tackled them. As the four of them wrestled on the ground, Packbell rose from his spot and fired, hitting them with the Persona Ray. Both of the evil twins cried out as they became light, then flowed back into their owner's body.
"Well, that's four down, and one to go," said Sonic as he came out of his hiding place with Silver. "And I think I know where I'll find my worse half." With that, Sonic sped off into the warehouse.
**********
"In fifteen minutes, Mobius will be a planet of pure evil," said Alpha-Sonic under his breath as he watched the countdown till the machine would have enough power. Alpha then heard the sound of air moving behind him. He turned around to face Sonic. "Ah, my better half. How nice of you to be here to see my greatest accomplishment in my short time on this planet."
"What do you mean? That thing looks more like a telescope than a weapon," said Sonic.
"Ah, but that is where you're wrong. It is, in fact, a giant version of the Persona Ray," said Alpha-Sonic.
"What!?" cried Sonic as he looked up at the giant machine.
"And in less then fifteen minutes, it will fire," said Alpha-Sonic. His face then twisted into an evil grin. "The blast from this cannon will hit a satellite orbiting above Mobius, and then will be sent throughout the globe, splitting everyone's personalities in two."
"And I thought Robotnik was evil, but you take the prize," said Sonic. He then shot forward towards the control panel. But Alpha-Sonic spindashed to the right, anticipating Sonic's move. Alpha-Sonic slammed into Sonic, knocking the blue hedgehog to the steel floor and sending him sliding into the warehouse wall. Sonic slowly got to his feet, a sharp pain shooting through where Alpha-Sonic's quills had punctured his skin. He had never faced a spindash, especially one from himself. A few deep gashes were bleeding slightly, but he didn't care.
"You may as well give up, Sonic," said Alpha-Sonic. "The machine's already been set to automatic. It can't be stopped now." Sonic gritted his teeth.
"That's what you think," said Sonic as he shot forward, curling up into a spindash. Alpha-Sonic countered the attack with a spindash of his own, both of them bouncing off each other. Sonic landed opposite of Alpha-Sonic.
"You're pretty good," said Sonic.
"You aren't bad yourself," said Alpha-Sonic, crossing his arms across his chest. "Unfortunately for you, I am better." With that, Alpha-Sonic snapped his arms away from his body. A bright flash of light flooded the warehouse as a loud buzz filled the air. When the light died down, Alpha-Sonic was floating a foot off the ground, his blue fur and quills now flashing back and forth between a deep crimson and a jet black color.
"Impossible…" said Sonic in a near whisper. Hyper Alpha-Sonic smiled down at Sonic.
"Not really. The emeralds have a positive and negative side to them just as people do. Their evil powers are under my control," said Alpha.
"So you want to go hyper-to-hyper, huh? Sounds fine with me," said Sonic. He then crossed his own arms over his chest and snapped them away from his body. A second bright flash filled the warehouse as a second loud buzz filled the air. When the light died down, Sonic was now also floating a foot off the ground, his blue fur ad quills sparkling in a rainbow of colors as white energy stars circled his body.
"So it comes down to this?" said Alpha-Sonic as he gave a smirk. "Who will win? The good Sonic, or the evil Sonic?"
"Well, there’s only one way to find out!" cried Hyper Sonic as he shot forward. Hyper Alpha-Sonic dodged to the side as Sonic sailed past him, crashing through the warehouse wall. Alpha-Sonic gave chase as Sonic flew up above the factory. Down below, the other Freedom Fighters as well as Robotnik, Packbell, and Metal Sonic watched in awe as the two hyper hedgehogs circled one another in the sky.
"It’s time to see which of us is meant to be the dominant personality!" cried Alpha-Sonic as he curled up into a spindash. Alpha-Sonic then shot forward, Sonic barely flying above him as he dodged the charge. Sonic then curled into his own spindash and flew backwards, slamming into Alpha-Sonic. Both of them went sailing into a nearby factory. Sonic then uncurled and pushed Alpha-Sonic onto one of the conveyor belts.
"Not bad," laughed Alpha-Sonic as he stood up. "But this fight has gone on long enough!" Suddenly, Alpha-Sonic’s body went limp for a split second, then he looked up, his eyes now glowing bright red. "You are now going to be one with the universe, Sonic the Hedgehog!" There was also something different about his voice. It seemed much deeper and filled with pure evil. Sonic, who didn’t realize the change, didn’t see Alpha-Sonic’s attack until it was too late.
"What in the…!?" was all Sonic got out before a blast of pure chaos energy shot from Alpha-Sonic’s body and slammed into him, knocking him back into a giant piece of machinery, which collapsed on top of Sonic.
"How ironic that your own personality was the one who took you down," said Alpha-Sonic. Suddenly, a flash of white light burst from inside the collapsed machine. Sonic then burst from the pile of scrape metal, his flashing rainbow color now gone. Instead, his body was now a solid white color.
"Alpha," said Sonic. But something about his voice wasn’t the same. It sounded much deeper, and had more of an authority about itself. "You have defiled the very fabric of order that has been established on this planet. True, you may have been born by the actions of others, but your continued existence in this plane can not be allowed."
"And who’s going to stop me? You?" asked Alpha-Sonic, laughing. "Look around you. I have won! In less than five minutes, the entire world of Mobius will be consumed by its evil personalities that live in every single living creature!"
"You are wrong. Evil will never succeed as long as there are good beings in the universe to stop it. I am one of those beings, reincarnated through the good powers that the Super Emeralds possess. I am only borrowing this mortal in order to let myself walk among those that live in the world of matter," said Sonic.
"Foolish hedgehog. Do you really think I will fall for that lame acting voice? I know you can’t possibly be who you are sounding like" asked Alpha-Sonic.
"I beg to differ. While I am here to stop you, I am here also to reunite this mortal’s evil half with his good," said Sonic.
"Enough of this! I shall just kill you both and be done with it!" cried Alpha-Sonic as another blast of evil chaos energy flew from his body. But before it hit Sonic, a powerful blast of good chaos energy burst from his own body, countering Alpha-Sonic’s and slamming into the evil personality. The glow in Alpha-Sonic’s eyes left him as he fell to the ground. His fur changed back into its normal blue color. Sonic then landed next to him, his own white fur fading back to the rainbow colors of his hyper form.
"Oh man. What just happened?" asked Sonic as he shook his head. His voice was now back to normal. He then looked over and noticed Alpha-Sonic laying next to him. "What the!? How did…!?" But instead of trying to figure out what had happened, he figured he’d just go with it. Picking up his fallen evil side, he flew out of the factory.
**********
"I wonder what happened to them?" asked Sally to herself as she paced back and forth. Suddenly, they all saw a glowing figure fly out of the factory the two hedgehogs had entered.
"There he is!" cried Tails as Hyper Sonic flew over to them and landed next to them, his evil half still in his arms. Sonic then looked over at Packbell and gave a nod. Packbell aimed the Persona Ray at them and fired. The beam hit them squarely. Sonic’s evil half flashed into white light, which then soaked itself into Sonic’s body. Sonic fell to the ground, his mind once again complete.
"Oh man. I feel like a truck hit me," said Sonic. He suddenly looked up as something dawned on him. "We have to stop that machine! It’s a giant one of those things!" he cried, pointing at the Persona Ray Packbell was holding.
"That isn’t good. I designed the Persona Ray to explode if anything was to try and disarm it manually. Only myself, Metal Sonic, and Robotnik could do it safely," said Packbell, looking at the warehouse. "And if that thing is nothing more than a giant version of this, its probably been made out of the same design plans, which means that once someone tries to disarm the thing, it will explode."
"And I can’t touch it while I’m hyper," said Sonic. "What now?"
"I’ll go!" said Silver. "I’m the most protected one here. If that thing’s going to blow, then I’ll be the one who stands the greatest chance of withstanding the blast."
"I am going as well," said Metal Sonic. "I have the proper hacking tools in my software that should get you past the security systems installed in the ray gun’s software."
"Right, then. Let’s go!" cried Silver as he and Metal Sonic ran into the warehouse.
"So now what?" asked Tails.
"Nothing we can do now," said Sonic as he watched the two robotic hedgehogs enter the warehouse. "Except hope."
"Pardon me, but if this thing is does explode, then we will want to be as far away from it as possible. It will be one huge explosion," said Packbell. Everyone looked over at him.
"Define ‘huge’," said Sonic.
"As in we shouldn’t be anywhere near this building right now," said Packbell.
"All right. Everyone line up behind me," said Sonic as Sally, Knuckles, and Tails lined up behind him. Sonic then sighed and looked over his shoulder. "I know I’m going to regret this later on, but you too Robotnik and Packbell." Both of them lined up behind Sonic as well. Sonic then took off, heading away from the warehouse as fast as his feet could carry him.
**********
"So what now?" asked Silver as he fiddled with the ray’s wiring.
"Try that connecting that one with this one," said Metal Sonic as the two of them worked frantically to disarm the ray gun. There was only two minutes left before it fired, but so far, nothing they did the thing seemed to stop its count down.
"Nothing," said Silver. "How about this?" He then rewired a few more of the connections. But still nothing happened.
"Negative. Alpha wired this thing so that only he could stop it without causing it to explode," said Metal Sonic. The Mecha bot then emerged from the wiring of the thing.
"So what do we do now?" asked Silver, looking up at the timer, which now read one minute. Metal Sonic looked up at the timer as well.
"I refuse to have this mistake repeated," said Metal Sonic. He then looked back at Silver. "I am not lying when I say that next to the hedgehog, you are the best fighter I have ever had the pleasure of engaging in combat with."
"Wait a sec. What are you saying?" asked Silver.
"I am saying that in order to stop this thing, one of us is going to have to stay here and cause the thing to explode," said Metal Sonic. "I may be a ruthless killer and an evil person, but I am a responsible person. I created those evil twins, and now I must pay for what I have created."
"You’re not saying…?" started Silver.
"Yes I am. I must take responsibility for this. It is because of me that a thing that could destroy the whole world is about to be unleashed. I will not let this happen a second time!" cried Metal Sonic. "I may not like you or the other Freedom Fighters, or especially that hedgehog, but I will not allow myself to destroy this planet. It is not what I was programmed for. I was built to fight Sssonic, and to kill him. Not to kill a whole planet."
"Are you sure about this?" asked Silver, still not believing what the evil Mecha bot was saying.
"I am sure. I walked into the lion’s den, and now I must pay for it. Tell Sssonic that he is a worthy rival, and that I will miss that rivalry more than anything else," said Metal Sonic as he placed his hands on a thick patch of wires. Silver stood there for a second in shock, but then gave a nod along with a smile.
"Good luck," said Silver as he turned and ran from the warehouse. Once outside, he ignited his foot thrusters and took off in the direction Sonic had gone. Back inside, the timer had reached its last ten seconds.
"10…9…8…," said the mechanical voice of the timer. Metal Sonic looked back at the machine. "7…6…5…" He knew what he had to do, to correct his mistake of ever using that Persona Ray. "4…3…2…" Now came the time to correct that mistake! "1…" Metal Sonic then gave the wires a hand yank, ripping them from their housing. The machine whined as the wires connecting the computer to the machine were disconnected. Suddenly, the machine began to hum louder and louder as its power began to overload.
"This is the fate that I have created for myself. This is how it must be," thought Metal Sonic just as the machine blew sky high.
**********
On the other side of the city, a now de-charged Sonic and the others watched as a miniature mushroom cloud rose from where the warehouse had been.
"Man! That was one big bang!" said Sonic. Everyone else just nodded in agreement.
"Sonic!" cried the voice of Silver. Everyone’s heads snapped to attention at the sound of the robotic hedgehog’s voice.
"Silver! That you?" called Sonic. His question was answered as the silver robot hedgehog emerged from over one of the building’s roofs.
"You know it," said Silver as he landed next to Sonic.
"But wait a second. How could you be here? It took me a minute to get here myself. You shouldn’t have been able to fly that fast," said Sonic. Silver’s smile vanished as he looked back towards the dissipating cloud of smoke that was all that remained of the warehouse.
"Mecha sacrificed himself to stop the machine," said Silver.
"You’re kidding me," said Sonic, his eyes wide in shock.
"I’m not. He said it was his fault this whole thing started, and that it was his responsibility to fix it," said Silver.
"That is very strange. I didn’t build Mecha to have that kind of attitude," said Robotnik.
"True, but Mecha’s personality as well as his ability to think independently has grown ever since you created him," said Packbell. "Maybe his independent mind thought this is what he had to do?"
"He also asked me to tell you something," said Silver to Sonic.
"What?" asked Sonic.
"He said to tell you that he always thought of you as his greatest rival, and always will," said Silver.
"Kind of weird how Mecha would say something like that," said Sally.
"Yeah," said Knuckles.
"So now what do we do?" asked Tails. Sonic turned to Robotnik and Packbell.
"The truce is over Robotnik. But since you didn’t double-cross us like I thought you would, we will let you go free and do as you choose. Return to your position as ruler of Robotropolis, go terrorize someone else for a change, or simply give up your evil ways. The choice is yours," said Sonic as the others lined up behind him. He then shot away from the area, kicking up a cloud of dust as he raced towards the nearest city exit.
"So what now?" asked Packbell.
"Back to the Command Center. I have an idea about how to solve our little problem of loosing Mecha," said Robotnik with a chuckle. Packbell was about to follow, but instead decided he’s try and find anything salvageable of Metal Sonic’s body.
**********
One week later, things had finally gone back to normal. Robotnik was back in control of Robotropolis, and the Freedom Fighters were once again back to fighting someone they knew how to prepare raids against. But there was still one thing that was left unsolved.
**********
"There’s something about the whole ‘evil twin’ experience that still has me confused," said Sonic to Knuckles. The two of them were having a private meeting in Sonic’s hut by Sonic’s request.
"What’s that?" asked Knuckles.
"It just that when me and Alpha were inside that factory and we both were using the emeralds, something strange happened," said Sonic.
"What do you mean?" asked Knuckles, a little more attentive now.
"First, Alpha’s voice changed tone and pitch. It sounded dark, and for some reason, extremely powerful. The next thing I know, I’m lying next to an unconscious Alpha, who is no longer hyper."
"That is weird," said Knuckles.
"It was like someone or something was in control of me, living through me," said Sonic. Knuckles nodded a bit as he closed his eyes in thought. Sonic looked over at him. "Do you know what happened?" Knuckles then opened his eyes as a thought came to mind.
"Well, there are many things about the supers that I’m not familiar with myself, but I have read many legends that told of people becoming possessed by the supers. They would almost seem to be a separate person when they used them. Granted that the effect usually only happened once or twice out of all the times that they used them. But this deal about both of you possibly falling under their spell is interesting, to say the least," said Knuckles. He then stood up and started to pace around the room. "If both of you were using the emeralds, you using the good side of them, and Alpha using the dark side, then that might mean that you were both being controlled by the emeralds."
"Whoa, back up. Are you saying that there is more than one of these beings inside the emeralds, because there is no way we were both sharing the same mind at that time," said Sonic. Knuckles stopped his pacing and looked over at Sonic.
"It is possible. Legends told of both the Chaos Emeralds and the Super Emeralds holding the essences of both good and evil inside them. This is what gives the emeralds their power," said Knuckles. "It is quite possible that one of the good essences used your body to come into this world, and one of the evil essences used Alpha’s body to come to this world. Either way, this is something that I think I should look into. I still don’t know very much about the supers.
"I guess the supers are something that will always be a mystery to us. But I would still rather have them than not," said Sonic.
"Same here," said Knuckles.
THE END
