O, so apparently I get paid large sums of cash to sit in meetings and write web pages. On the one hand this sounds like easy money, on the other hand, it bores me. Worse, sometimes it hurts. Like the other day when I’m trying to sit and listen to my boss talk for an hour, all the while thinking, “I have got to take a shit.” No really, I mean, a good shit. Like my eyes were turning brown.
So since they do everything there via Outlook, like scheduling all these damn meetings, to seemed wise to have me go learn some serious Outlook stuff. It’s like they just don’t get it. This little learning session involved a nice resource room, fully equipped with 2 WWII era computers, a slew of videotapes on a variety of topics, some reference manuals, a scanner, webcam, phone, books, etc. All of this was fine except the part where I was supposed to take this ‘class’ as a self-paced computer learning session. I did manage to get the tape in this tiny TV-VCR combo unit. And that was the end of the honeymoon.
Let’s just say I might be the first employee to call Tech Support (yet again) with simultaneous (and different) errors on 2 different computers. At some point I really think the Tech Support annual budget will include a direct charge to my boss just to support me.
Overall, however, this job seems ok. The atmosphere is courteous, quiet, and professional. There is plenty of information available (sometimes disorganized though), decent furnishings (for a cube-farm) and definite processes for most everything. It’s also good not to be expected to work 50+ hrs a week and weekends.
The downsides seem to be the staleness of the place (can’t quite put my finger on this yet) and the travel. I’m already signed up for a 4day/4night trip at the end of this month and a 2day/1night trip to start April with another 3day/2night trip sometime in April most likely. Not too bad though, but in between there are lots of meetings – either in house, video- or audio-conferences.
