Obverse A rimless medal 34mm in diameter in silver for 'Honour' and bronze for Distinction and Merit. A stylised representation of the Irish Hero Cuchulainn, with upraised sword standing on a chariot drawn by two galloping horses. A charioteer crouches beside him with horse whip in hand. 
Reverse The inscription "An Bonn Seirbhise Dearscna".
Suspension Bottom - a ring affixed to the top of the medal.
Top - a pin-back brooch with a 'losenge' design.
Bars For subsequent awards a bar similar to the top suspension is worn on the ribbon.
