Obverse The figure of Eire placing a laurel wreath on the head of a kneeling soldier with the words "An Bonn Seirbhise" partially surrounding the soldier, and a small spray of laurel to the right of Eire.
Reverse Around the top the words "The Service Medal", with the recipients name and service number engraved in the centre.
Suspension Bottom - a ring fixed to the medal.
Top - a pin-back brooch with a the word 'Seirbhis'.
Bars Two Laurel sprays on either side of a cruciform design.
