Obverse The figure of an ancient Soldier ("Kern") wearing a tunic and sword in a belt and carrying a Spear in the right hand and an oval Shield with Celtic motif in the left hand. The legend around the edge reads "Faire Biogdac Tus na Saoirse".
Reverse Around the top the words "An Bonn Seirbhise FCA agus SM".
Suspension Bottom - a straight bar fixed to the top of the medal with a claw.
Top - a pin-back brooch with a the word 'Seirbhis'.
Bars Two Laurel sprays on either side of a cruciform design for the 12 year bar. A second bar with the number 21 in a disk at its centre is worn for 21 years service.
