Chapter Eighteen: Shackles of Silver

Stanley growled an unearthly growl that sounded like a hundred wolves crying out to the moon, but only Livia could hear it. She held her ears with her hands and tried with all her might to make the sound go away, but it wasn't working, no matter what. She saw people walk right by her, but it seemed that no one could see Stanley or her. So who could help her now?

"Go away Stanley! I'm not joining you! I'd rather die!" She screamed as she tried to run away.

Stanley raised his hands again and lowered them. The bracelet flew to his hands and changed into shackles with a large chain attached to them. He wove them in the air in a circle and aimed for Livia. As they were flying towards her they opened and when they met her wrists they closed and locked tight. She ran as far as the chain's length would go and when it ended she stopped abruptly and was thrown to the ground.

"If you want to die, then you'll die, but you're gonna remember whether you see them or not, you have these shackles on. I will come back for you when the moon is full, and if you haven't changed your mind by then, you will die along with those moon worshipers." Stanley let go of the chains and vaporized into the air.

The chain laid on the ground. It was too heavy for Livia to carry, she could barely keep her arms up from the shackles. Then they glowed a silver, then gold, and then they disappeared. For a few minutes it felt like they were still there hanging on her arms, then the sensation went away. She got a tap on the shoulder and jumped out of her skin. She turned around quickly to see Kaine standing behind her.

"Hey, we were wondering where you went. Everyone's worried." Kaine said looking a little mad.

"Sorry, I didn't mean to worry anyone. I just needed some time alone." She said looking back down at her wrists.

"You know you shouldn't be running off like this. Especially since tomorrow that voice said he was going to come and kill us all." Kaine said trying not to let his anger filter out.

"It's your father, not a just a voice." Livia said as a tear fell down her face. She tried to hide it but Kaine saw it.

"How do you know it's definitely my dad?" He said kneeling down to be at her level on the ground.

"He came to me as a female voice. And he offered me this bracelet, then I told the thing to show itself, and of course, it did, and it was him… and I told him I wouldn't join him, and he turned the bracelet into shackles…" Some more tears rolled down her eyes. She didn't care if Kaine saw. He had already seen her cry. "Then I told him I'd rather die than join his little group, and he told me whether I see them or not I'll always be shackled."

Kaine looked around, and there were marks in the ground as if something long and thick, much like a large chain had been dragged on the ground. He followed it and it led right up to Livia.

"Come on, let's get back. Maybe the girls or Cynthia and Loren could help you. Besides hopefully you'll be protected." He just shook his head.

"I know! I know! I shouldn't have left at all, but you don't have to rub it in my face with your looks Kaine. I can't help I'm an idiot." She said getting up and going back to Morven - Piper house.

He just looked at her for a moment walking back to the house. "But… that's not what I meant…" He quietly said to himself. I just don't want him to hurt you. That's all. What the hell did he do to you Livia? He looked at the track marks on the ground and just shook his head. "Father, you're a fool." Then he walked back to the house. He couldn't catch up with Livia though.

"Livia," Cynthia said. "Where have you been young lady. Everyone's been looking for you."

"Sorry, I went to the cemetery. I'm sorry I didn't tell anyone where I was going. Or why I was going. But I guess I'm okay now." Livia looked away from Cynthia's eyes and mumbled. "About that anyway…"

"Well, come on. Lets let everyone know that you're okay now." She guided Livia by putting her hand on her back.

The others were happy to know Livia was okay. She didn't mention anything about what had happened with her and Stanley. It was too weird for her, and once again she didn't want to bother other people with her emotions and things that were bothering her. She sunk down into a chair as Kaine walked into the room. Her heart felt like it had stopped. Would he tell them all about what had happened? Then what would happen after that?

"You and I really need to talk Livia…" Kaine whispered as he went out of the room into the study.

She thought for a moment on what she was going to do. Then she got up and figured that some way some how, he would be able to help her. She walked in cautiously when she stepped into the room. Kaine was sitting in the big green lounge chair by a big oak desk.

"You said you needed to talk to me Kaine?" She said innocently.

He took a minute as he paused. "Yeah, we need to talk badly…"

There was a knock on the front door. Skrina walked over and opened it. There were three people standing before her. An older woman, a young woman, and a young man. The older woman had long dark brown hair tied up in a braid behind her tannish creamy face. The girl was obviously her daughter because they shared the same face, but her hair was short and wavy, and the colour was unusual a black and red mix. Then there was the young man. He didn't seem to fit in with the other two. Blonde hair, blue eyes, fair skin.

"Merry Meet, we're the family from Pennsylvania. The ones that hardly get to come here." The woman smiled. Her presence so warm you just wanted to stay around her for hours.

"Merry Meet, come in." Skrina smiled and once they were in closed the door behind them.

She vaguely remembered this family. She walked over to Jordan and told her that this was a part of the coven that lived out of state, but whenever they had the chance or money they would come.  Now this was a really important time to come, I mean the whole coven was pretty much in danger. Who knows where Stanley would strike first. He had no heart; he didn't care who he killed. The more the merrier.

Vera went over and smiled when she met with the woman. They hugged and when they parted Vera spoke. "June it's so nice to see you. I've missed you so much." They hugged again. This time this embrace lasted longer than the first. Vera looked over at Jordan and waved her to come over.

Jordan did as her mother motioned and brought Skrina a long with her. Vera looked at June and then to the girls. "June this is my daughter, Nicole Jordan. She likes to be called Jordan, and this is our good friend Skrina."

June smiled and shook their hands. Then she motioned for her two young adults to come forward. "This is my daughter Amenia, and my son Shaine."

"Amenia?" Skrina said. "That's a cool name."

"Well, you should be saying that to my mom here, she's the one who gave it to me." Amenia smiled at her mother.

"Let's all go out to the garden, I can introduce you to all my new friends and soon to be coven members. Their initiations are being put off, I'm sure you know why." Vera said walking everyone to the garden.

They all walked out to the garden. Jordan introduced June, Shaine, and Amenia to Gregg and Jim first while she was still searching for Georgia, Livia and Kaine. Hestia and the other magick cooking workers came out of the kitchen with the smell of lovely food smashed right into the very clothes they wore. They told everyone to stay out in the garden so they could set up the tables and get the plates and silverware placed where they needed to be. They didn't need any people underfoot.

Livia looked at Kaine. Her head was facing the ground but her eyes were staring up at him. They would occasionally slip down to the floor when she couldn't look at him any longer. It wasn't the fact that she didn't want to, it just hurt her eyes to stare at him for so long like that. It would have been just simple to look at him the right way, but that's the only way she felt that was right at the moment.

"So, do you want to tell me why you went to that cemetery? What was the big problem that was so huge you'd risk yourself, along with others by going there?" He leaned over and tilted her head up forward, forcing her to look at him straight. "I'll know if you're lying."

She shifted her head away from his fingertips and moved back. "I don't really see how that's any of your business Kaine. I already told you what you wanted, needed, to know. Isn't that enough?"

He looked at her oddly. "What's with the defense? Is there something I don't know that you're not telling me? Like something to do with my dad?"

Livia scoffed. "Is that all you can think about?! I feel like I'm some stupid story where everything is twisted! Why can't the damn author of this stupid thing just make everything easy! Why does everything have to do with Stanley?! God, he's just a stupid cult guy! What can he do?!"

"Livia… I was just worried about you. That's all." He got up and gave her a glare. "You know if you keep on pushing people away, there's gonna be no one left for you."

Before Livia could even utter a word he walked out the door. She closed her eyes tight. Wishing, spellcrafting that it'll all go away, or some how be perfect again. But nothing happened. She knew it wasn't her lack of magickal skill. She knew that the most powerful person in the word couldn't mend what she just tore apart. Why did she have act like that? What is she trying to protect, by being so hard? Is she really that soft that she feels that she has to have this shell to cover the core? She just sank into the chair and put her hand on her confused face. She wished she had someone to talk to. She did, but if someone were to walk in the door right now, she was ready to pour her heart out. But of course, fate's cruel hand didn't let someone walk through that door.

Kaine walked into the room angry. He noticed Hestia and her cooking friends were putting together the tables. She looked over to him. He tried to hide his expression, but it was too late. She had already seen it.

"What's the matter Kaine?" Hestia came over to him and put her hand on his shoulder.

"Livia, she's being a bitch." He simply said.

"Oh." Hestia fought down a laugh from his flat honesty. "Why is she being that way?"

"I was just trying to ask her about what she was feeling when she sorta ran away to the cemetery over there and she yelled at me and told me it was none of my business." He said looking at Hestia's hand on his shoulder. The red nail polish on her fingers looked so perfect.

"Something tells me you took that a little too personally." Hestia giggled and took her hand back. "It was none of your business, and you know that. Everyone is entitled to their privacy."

He just looked right and Hestia and narrowed his eyes. His green eyes glittered in the light and seemed to flex a glow of his 'I hate you' expression. Hestia giggled again and looked back at him. Her glints seemed to push his away.

"You suck. You know you always win at staring contest. Anyway I wasn't taking it personally. Livia needs help, and I was offering and she wouldn't take it. She's a bitch." He walked away and went outside to the garden.

Hestia laughed. Another woman she was cooking with heard the whole thing. She giggled too. "Some thing tells me he's fond of that girl." Hestia nodded and went over to the study door.

"Livia." Hestia said in a sweet quiet song as she opened the door.

Livia looked up and took her hands away from her face. Really just wiping the tears out of her face. She noticed it was Hestia and she sort of smiled at her little song. "What do you want Hestia?"

"Well, I just wanted to see how you were. Kaine was pretty upset when he came outta here. What did you say to him?" She said pretended she didn't have the conversation she had with him just a moment ago.

"He was mad at me cos I was rude to him. He was just worried about me… I guess I like snapped at him. I didn't mean to do it. I'm just really angry at myself right now." Livia said taking in a deep breath.

Hestia looked out the study door and asked the ladies if they needed anymore of her help. They said they could pretty much take care of themselves now and dinner would be ready soon. Hestia smiled and pulled herself back into the study and closed the door. "Okay, do you want to talk about things? You can trust me. I won't tell anyone."

Livia sort of made a little smile. She was glad Hestia had come to talk about her. There was just something about her, something so pleasant. "Yeah, I'd really like that."

Hestia giggled and made herself cozy in a chair as Livia explained to her how she's been feeling about the magick thing. How she thinks that she is nothing, and how people are succeeding over her. She even told her what had happened between her and Stanley earlier. Then what happened with Kaine.

She closed her eyes and sighed. Hestia went over and hugged her tight. "It's okay. Everything's gonna be okay. I'm here for you. Especially about the Stanley thing. He can't make you do anything you don't want to do." She let go of Livia and looked into her eyes. Livia was lost in Hestia's green eyes. They looked a lot like Pele's eyes. Big, green, round and had the most interesting and beautiful strings of colour going through them. Then Hestia smiled sweetly. "And then there's another thing. But maybe I should be by that door." She giggled.

"What?" Livia looked at her strangely.

Hestia was about to say something when one of the ladies who had been setting the table knocked on the door. She walked over and opened the door. "Dinner's ready." The woman said.

Hestia looked at Livia and smiled. "Okay, I'll be out in a second." She walked over to Livia. "I think you like Kaine…" She smiled and ran out the door.

Livia's eyes widened then glared and where Hestia once was. She got up quickly and chased after her. Hestia was going out to the garden to tell everyone dinner was ready. Livia caught up to her. "I'll kill you later." She joked as she heard Hestia declare dinner was ready.

Everyone pretty much got up from what they were doing and walked into the dinning room. They sat in their places. Hestia made sure that Livia had to sit next to Kaine. Livia and Kaine didn't look at each other. Livia wanted to tell him she was sorry, but she wanted to get him alone to do that. She couldn't admit she was wrong in front of everyone.

Georgia and Demeter were sitting next to each other quietly giggling among themselves about guys and other things they've been chatting about throughout the day. Aimery looked at the two. He was sitting across from Demeter. He just smiled and shook his head.  They were so silly.

Gregg and Jim sat next to each other. Gregg was sitting next to Amenia. He smiled and that's all she could see. She thought he was the strangest guy, but kinda cute in the way he didn't show his face. She wondered if he was handsome or ugly. Why did he wear that hat? Well, everyone's been wondering that one. It's gonna remain a mystery for a long, long time most people thought. But it was Gregg and after a while, no one really noticed that half his face was covered by a hat. He introduced himself and made Jim introduce himself.

Jordan sat next to the head of the table where Cynthia sat. On the other side to her were her mother and Leslie. She looked down at her mom's belly and giggled. Leslie laughed and looked at Vera and smiled sweetly. Vera smiled back and looked at her daughter and smiled at her. She was so proud of her daughter. Even though she doesn't think she's that great of a witch, she knows she'll be great in her time. Well, you can't become a witch over night. It's better that way, Vera thought. It gives her more time to get wiser. To help your coven in the best ways you can. She smiled and told Jordan those things she was just thinking. Jordan smiled and hugged her mom.

They began dinner by Cynthia and Loren saying a blessing over the food and all the people who were there, and it was the most fabulous meal the coven had ever tasted in their lives. They thought that Hestia and the ladies must of put a lot of heart into it. Hestia smiled with pride on her face and thanked the other ladies for the pleasure of cooking with them. It was her first time cooking with them and it was really fun. She liked it a lot.

Livia was really quiet and she of course didn't go into any of the conversations at the dinner table. Aimery looked over at her and noticed her. There was something odd about this girl. He didn't know if he liked it or not. She was really quiet and kept to herself just about one hundred percent.  Someone like that usually is keeping some sort of secret. It just wrapped around her aura and it was floating about her body. It was almost like a bad smell to Aimery. He was sitting next to her so he whispered to her.

"Hey Livia. What's up?" He whispered very quietly, so just about no one heard him.

She jumped a little. She looked at him, and barely in any sort of voice she said "Hi. Nothing."  Then she returned to eating her food slowly, playing with it a little.
