She walked in the cottage and her mother wasn't home. She left Jordan a note saying that she just went out to get some groceries and she would be right back. Jordan went into her room and threw her backpack onto the ground. She had a lot of homework to do. That was great, but then again she had nothing else to do. Though she was going to wait until her mom got home. To tell her about her day, and get something to eat. She thought if she got everything out, it would clear her mind and she could concentrate on her work.
About ten minutes later her mom Vera came home. Jordan helped her mom bringing in the groceries while telling her tale of her first day of school. About Hestia and Skrina, and about their older sister Demeter, and why she didn't like her. How much that bugged her. Her mom smiled sweetly towards her and hugged her.
"Some things we aren't supposed to know. But it's not good to always live in a secret. It's like living in a shadow, soon the sun will rise and you won't be able to hide."
She loved the way her mom put things. She seemed so wise. That she was, with the life of struggle they had, and how much they had gotten through it all. It seemed like magick. It made them into the strong women they are today. Jordan wouldn't change anything in her life for the world. Even if there were some obstacles in her way. That wouldn't stop her in her quest. Her quest for living, and knowing the truth.
Her mom told her to get started on the loads of schoolwork she had to do and she would cook something really nice for her to snack on. Jordan kissed her mom on the cheek and went off into her bedroom.
She took out her books, took our notebooks, and took out her pens and pencils. She thought she would start with her most hated subject; Social Studies. This seemed different though. She had to do a report on an ancient civilization. There were so many. Which one could she pick? She played with her cross, pulling it up and down along its string. Then it hit her; she would do a report on Celtic civilization. She always had a fascination being linked with the Celtic Druids, but she didn't know really anything about them. So she got on her computer and went on the Internet and looked up Celtic Druids, Celtic Myths, and Celtic civilization. Any information she could muster up.
Her mom tapped lightly on the door to let her daughter know she was coming in. Jordan could smell something wonderful as her mom came in the room. It was chocolate chip cookies, fresh from the oven. Her mom handed her the plate and sat down next to her seeing what she was doing. Jordan told her what she was assigned and told her that her cross inspired her to pick what she was researching. Vera hugged her daughter and told her not to work too hardly and let her be. Another thing she loved about her mom, she always gave her her privacy and let her figure things on her own unless she came for help.
Jordan's eyes widened when she found out that the root of most witches was the belief the Celtic Druids inspired a long time ago. She knew the Morven secret now. She hit her in the head it was so obvious. They were witches. Well, that is what she strongly thought. She wasn't sure. She always had this voice in her head; it was her doubting voice. She hated her doubting voice. It stopped her from doing a lot of things that could have made her life a hell of a lot easier. But she always listened to that voice. It was like it was a siren calling her in from the sea. She couldn't resist listening to its song. This time she was going to listen to it for now, but she still thought that the Morven girls were what she thought and she was going to find out for sure. If they were witches, what was so bad about that? Why would Demeter want to hide it so badly? She knew some people would crucify them, they wouldn't understand. She just shook her head.
"You can't hide forever Demeter, you know that." She said to herself. Maybe in some magickal way Demeter could hear her.
Hestia and Skrina went to their grandmother and told them about Jordan. They told her about the way Demeter acted towards her. Tallulah looked at her granddaughter with disappointment lingering in her gray eyes.
"Gram, don't look at me like that." Demeter said. "I don't hate Jordan, I just don't want outsiders coming into this house."
"Well, when you decide things around here you can make that rule Demeter. I am the head of this house and this coven. Besides from what your sisters tell me she could be witch bloodline. We need more of us around here. For companionship and guidance."
"Gram!" Demeter protested.
Tallulah raised her hand and no sound came out of Demeter's voice. Or was is that Tallulah turned her hearing of Demeter's voice off?
"Anyway, if you would have been listening to me I would have given you news."
"Gram! Tell us!" Hestia and Skrina said at the same time. As if to know they were going to do that.
"Yes, Gram do tell." Shina said coming into the room.
"I have done the Tarot, and runes, consulted the stars, and so forth. There is something big coming. Great good, and great evil. They are both equal. They will both be here by the time of All Hallow's Eve."
"Could this be the test that I dreamt about Gram, when I dreamt of the daemon and the angel?"
"Yes Shina, it was a premonition. We must prepare ourselves for this."
That they did. For the last two weeks they harnessed their powers trying to better themselves. Tallulah told Demeter she wouldn't improve until she let go of the outsider thing. If she didn't they wouldn't be able to be fully prepared for the Equal Evil.
Demeter went to the lake to be alone she was surprised to see someone walking along the beach. Then she recognized the long red curly mane. It was none other than Jordan. Since she had met this young girl she kept dreaming about her in a white dress holding out her arms to Demeter crying. She didn't understand this dream, even in the day Jordan haunted Demeter's head. She wondered if this girl really was a witch and put some spell on her. Demeter watched in curiosity every move that Jordan made. Wondering what she was doing on the beach.
Jordan closed her eyes and as to be looking through her own eyelids looked up towards the sky. Letting the autumn breeze play with her hair with its invisible fingertips. She felt like she was in the arms of the sister she never had. The same thing with the water. It always seemed to be playing with her, like a young child. Then there was fire; she would always play with it burning candles in her room. Whenever she would put her fingers through the flame it did not bite or burn her. When she would sit under the big tree in the small little yard that they had she felt like a grandmother was hugging her. She felt so in tune with everything the world had to offer for her. Then there was people. She didn't get people. They were so complicated. Especially Demeter, she was like an enigma she just had to figure out. She felt that she should be a part of her life. If it was true about them being witches, she had the thought of Demeter putting some sort of spell on her.
They both dreamt of each other, longed to talk to each other about each other's problems, but they were both afraid. Something they would have to overcome if they were to survive what was coming. It was true that this great evil was coming, but all the Morven's didn't really think about the equal good that was coming. This thought actually at the moment came to Demeter was staring at Jordan. What was this Great Good? Was it a person? Demeter thought. No! It couldn't be, it can't have anything to do with Jordan! But what if it is? We don't have much time, and I can't let my pride get in the way. I have to talk to her.
She got up from the rock she was sitting on and went over to the closed eyed Jordan. Seeing her up close reminded her of ancient times. She looked like she belonged with her Celtic ancestors she knew she must have. She tapped her on the shoulder. Jordan jumped; she looked over to see the blonde beauty Demeter.
"Uh, Hi Demeter." Jordan said, unsure of what she wanted. Whether she wanted to know or not.
"Look, Jordan, I was thinking…" Demeter looked down to her feet as she paused. She continued, she knew she had to do this. "I was thinking of how I was acting before, when we first met, and well, I was stupid, and I'm sorry."
Jordan smiled. She knew Demeter's words were definitely sincere. She just moved closer to Demeter and gave her a hug. Demeter sank into this embrace. She somehow could feel her mother in this person. That couldn't be, she wasn't even related to her. She just enjoyed the short moment.
"So, are you?" They both said to each other. They both looked at each other strangely at first then they laughed.
"You know I think we are talking about the same thing." Demeter said smiling.
"Yeah, me too." Jordan smiled.
"Well, we can tell each other when you have dinner at my house tonight. You and your mom."
Demeter let go of the embrace and walked up the beach. Jordan went to tell her she had to make sure if it was okay but when she caught up to where she could have been, she was gone.
Jordan just looked off where Demeter would have been if she were still there. She shook her head, but she was happy. She finally made amends with Demeter and she was going to go into their house. Something she knew that no one else had done. It made her feel really special.
Jordan walked back up to her house and walked in. her mom was just about to turn on the oven to start dinner when Jordan stopped her. Jordan smiled and told her that they were invited to dinner, and who invited her. Vera was very happy that Demeter and Jordan had settled their differences. She was in a way interested in going herself. Her co-workers would always talk about that house, and how no one has ever been inside except the family.
Demeter came into the house and looked at her grandmother. She told her she was going to have to set two more spots at the dinner table tonight. Tallulah just smiled. She knew whom her daughter had invited. Demeter also added not to tell her sisters. She wanted it to be a surprise. Tallulah just nodded her little head and began making dinner.
There was one thing that Jordan and Demeter didn't think about. Jordan and her mother didn't know when the Morven's were going to have their dinner. Demeter just hit herself in the head as she was studying with her sisters. The others just looked at her queerly wondering what she had forgotten about.
"I'll be right back." Demeter said as she dashed out the door.
She ran over to Jordan's house. She had never been there before, she thought it was odd that she knew where it was. She knew that the Goddess must have guided her there. When she touched the doorknob she got a weird feeling that crept through her. Something really terrible. It involved Jordan and her mom. Was she making an awful mistake about Jordan and her mother? Or was she just being paranoid about having her selfishness coming to an end? Before she could even reconsider anything Jordan opened the door.
"Uh-- Hi Jordan, I just came over to tell you that dinner was at seven. Sorry I forgot to tell you." Demeter said with the feeling she was having written all over her face.
"Demeter what's the matter? You look like you've seen a ghost. Are you okay?"
"Yeah I'm fine, I'm just still feeling kinda bad on how I treated you."
Jordan looked at her with sympathetic eyes. She went over and hugged her. It felt so warm to Demeter, something she hadn't felt in a long time. It was the same kind of hug that Jordan gave to her at the lake. She felt her mother, but maybe it was just the same kind of warmth and love that her mother had that she was feeling. She knew that feeling, and what she felt when she touched the doorknob couldn't have came from Jordan. It had to be from her mother. That would make a lot of sense by what her grandmother said. The Great Good and the Equal Evil.
"Thanks for the hug. I really needed it. Well, I got to get back. I have to study. Remember we have that big math test."
Jordan laughed. "Yeah, I know, that's why I have my mom to help me. I'm terrible at math."
"Really? Maybe me and my sisters can help you study later."
Jordan looked at Demeter with excited expression. "That would be great! So I will see ya later?"
"Yeah. Bye!" Demeter yelled from the end of the driveway.
Demeter came back into the house and into the huge room that all the girls shared. Demeter smiled at her sisters and sat down. They continued studying. Though Demeter didn't really pay attention to the math studies. She was looking around their room. She was looking at it as the way Jordan would probably look at it. With amazement, their room was so big. It was twenty-five feet by another twenty-five feet. The room was mammoth. Covered in dark blues and greens, and surrounded by lines of purple and silver. With mirrors and candles, and the most heavenly thing there, their altar.
It was now quarter to seven. Vera and Jordan decided to walk up to the house. Jordan wanted to show her the path she walked every day after she was done with schoolwork. Vera was highly impressed with Jordan's path. It was beautiful, and now she knew why Jordan loved this place so much. It was so amazing.
