Chapter Five: Anubis in Samhain

The date was Wednesday October thirty-first. The day Tallulah feared and was relived that it came, because she knew that the Great Good and Equal Evil were now here. The question still lingered on though. Who were they? What were they? How would this involve the Morven family? Would this involve her beloved Nicole Jordan and Vera Marie? All she knew if those questions were answered in the way she thought they would be, she would protect everyone.

The girls came down in their Halloween costumes; they were going to go to the school dance. Shina was going to drive them there, then go to a party with her own friends in college, and they were to meet back here to have their Samhain celebration. Demeter was dressed as a Queen, Hestia a cat and Skrina an angel. Their costumes looked amazing they had a lot of help from their grandmother. They were going to pick up Aimery and Jordan. Hestia didn't know if this was such a good idea or not.

They pulled up to Aimery's driveway and he came out. He was dressed as a prince, and the costume suited him well. The girls all gasped and he just smiled at their reaction. He got in the car and said hello to all the girls, and he got introduced to Shina. Aimery looked at Demeter. He was stunned on how beautiful she looked. She noticed him looking at her and she just blushed.

They pulled up to Jordan's driveway, since Jordan wasn't outside on the porch like she said she was going to be. Shina beeped the horn.

"C'mon Jordan, let me get your wings on fast, and you go to the dance."

"Mom, I really didn't want to go. You better be right about this." Jordan groaned.

Vera finished putting the wings on her daughter. She was a faerie. She was all in glitter, and a yellow and pink costume. Her wings the same. She looked very pretty. She just looked at her mom with a look like she really didn't want to do this. She had told her about her dream that day, and how she really felt about Aimery.

"Go, you'll have a good time. You can't avoid this forever you know. Now go!" She friendly pushed her daughter out onto the porch and closed the door behind her. She walked over to the car. She opened the door and got in, not really saying anything but hi.

Aimery noticed she really didn't look happy. He put his arm around her and asked her what the matter was.

"What's the matter? Nothing. I'm okay, why do you ask?" She said shading over her real feelings.

"You just seem like you don't want to be here or something. You're too pretty to have that look on your face." He said, knowing something was up and she wasn't going to tell. He just wanted her to feel better.

She smiled and took his arm from her shoulder and placed it back on his lap. She then took his hand, like she was going to say how she really felt. Maybe that would change her dream, maybe her dream was just a warning that if she didn't say anything that would happen.

"I've got to tell you something, but not right now, later, at the dance okay?"

"Okay, just tell me when and where, and I'll be there." He laughed.

Jack o' lanterns, black cats, witches, and ghost covered the dance. Then there were the students. Every goblin that haunted your nightmare, every cartoon character you wanted to be, they were there. Every creature man fantasized was there. It seemed like some twisted kind of underworld.

Jordan was going to tell Aimery but Demeter who insisted that her and Aimery had to dance interrupted it. So he was taken away while Jordan had the courage to spill her heart out. Jordan didn't know if she could make it up to that point again.

The evening went on and it was almost an hour before the dance was over, and when the girls had to leave to celebrate their own holiday. There was one boy this evening that was watching Jordan just sit there. He could see that she was obviously trying to be with Aimery, or dance with him. But she couldn't seem to find a minute with him. He was dancing with Demeter all night long, and if they weren't dancing, they, together, were talking with friends. She was going to hang out with Hestia and Skrina, but some how she lost them among the crowd. When she finally found them they were dancing with two boys they really liked and she didn't want to disturb them.

The boy was dressed as the Egyptian God, Anubis. So he was wearing a mask so she wouldn't know who he was. He went over to her. "Hey there Jordan, why aren't you enjoying the party?" He said as he sat down next to her.

She looked at him. She didn't recognize the voice. She felt kind of bad that she didn't know who it was. So she thought of a quick way to save her butt. "I'm enjoying it Anubis, sitting right here." She said jokingly, but it was really supposed to be sarcastic.

He laughed, and put his arm around her. She really didn't care who he was; he was being nice to her. Something she needed at the moment. She leaned against his shoulder. "Careful you don't mess up your faerie glitter."

"Thanks."

He smiled, but she couldn't see his sweet expression on his face.  "You have no clue who I am do you?" He laughed.

"No…" She said blushing.

"Here, this'll help. Don't feel bad no one's known it was me either."

He took off his mask to reveal it was Kaine. He was one of the school's handsomest boys, almost as good looking as Aimery, in her eyes. She always thought that he was he was a bully. But then again it was the other girls who told her this about him. She never really did know him. I guess you shouldn't read a book by its cover. Sure he never wore anything that exceeded the colours of dark blues, purples, greens, reds, and black. And it looked like he never washed his hair. So what? If he was nice, it didn't matter.

"Kaine… I can't believe it's you."

He laughed. "Why not?"

"Well, I always thought that, you were a different kind of person."

"Well, you've got to learn to find out for yourself how people are, and not listen to your friends." He said as he put his mask back on.

"Yeah, you're right. I feel so bad. I'm sorry. I feel so stupid now--"

He rubbed his index and middle finger down her glittered cheek. "It's okay, you just had to learn a lesson I guess. Besides I knew you weren't like the other girls."

"Yeah, and you want to know why? People used to treat me like they -- and I treated you." A tear fell from her eyes.

"Aww, don't cry." He hugged her. "You just got swept away. I understand. I was sorta in the same situation, except I was the one who picked on this one person, and now that I've moved, I'm that person. So I understand."

She hugged him. He returned the hug.

"Now, before we get even more mushy and have everyone looking at us, you wanna dance before the night is over faerie princess?" He got up and extended his hand for her to take. She smiled and took it. They danced the last dance of the night. It had just began, and it seemed to last forever. Like it took them to another land. She knew she had just made another friend.

The dance was over, and everyone had to go. Parents, older brothers and sisters waiting to pick people up. Jordan looked over at Kaine. She smiled and hugged him tight. She gave him her phone number so they could talk later. He gave her his he lifted his mask just enough that his lips were exposed and he kissed her on the cheek.

Hestia just looked at her. She saw what Kaine did.

"So are you over Aimery now or something?" Hestia gave a sly smile.

"No! Kaine and I are just friends."

"Kaine? That was Kaine? He was so-- so nice." Hestia laughed. "Nothing like what Demeter told me."

"Well, you can't judge a book by its cover. So what if he's a little grungy. That's what makes him, him. Ya know?"

Hestia laughed, and then her face got into a serious look. "Look, there's something you've got to know. I know you don't want to hear this, but I'd rather be the person to tell you this."

"What?!" Jordan knew what this was, but hoping that it wasn't what she feared she asked anyway.

"Aimery asked Demeter out, and she said yes." Hestia went over to give Jordan a hug, or just plain hold her just in case she would faint or something.

"Don't touch me. I don't want nobody to touch me!" She ran into the parking lot just missed getting run over by a motorcycle.

"Jordan! Come back!" Hestia screamed.

It was too late Jordan disappeared into the darkness. Skrina came over to see what was the matter. All she saw was Jordan shove Hestia away and run into the parking lot. Skrina asked what was the matter. Hestia told her what had happened to make her run away like that.

"We have to look for her!"

Demeter came over with Aimery. Hestia heard what Jordan said to her in the car. She knew that Aimery knew at the dance when Jordan first tried to tell him, that she was going to tell him then. "You jerk! If only you listened to her when she tried to tell you earlier." Hestia said as she pushed him away. She walked into the parking lot calling for Jordan but she was no where in sight.

"What? What did I do?" Aimery said perplexed.

Skrina told him everything Hestia said. Demeter didn't know that Jordan liked Aimery that much. She would have never said yes if she had known.

Jordan walked into a diner and sat down at a booth. Kaine was there; he was the one in the motorcycle that had almost ran her over. She was crying. He got up and carried his French fries with him. "Didn't I tell you not to cry?" He sat down next to her. He took his mask off to reveal his long black hair and piercing green eyes.

"Kai--Kaine… what are you doing here?" She sobbed.

He held her face with his fingers by her chin and took a napkin and wiped away her tears trying not to mess up her glitter and eye makeup. He wasn't doing so well.  She told him the whole story. Well, she left the part out about the dream and her having anything to do with witchcraft, but he pretty much understood her situation.

"Why don't you call your mom and friends so they know where you are."

He gave her a quarter and she went over to the phone and called her Gram Tallulah because that's where her mom would be. She got her mom on the phone and told her everything that happened. She said she was at a diner with a friend and she just wanted to be alone. She was going to skip the Samhain celebration. She knew how much it meant to her mom that she was there, but she couldn't be there. Not like this. Vera understood. She knew it would be chaos if Jordan were here. She just told her that if she was okay later she would come and pick her up.

Jordan came back over and sat next to Kaine. She just leaned against his shoulder. He put his arm around her. "I'll give you a ride home whenever you want to go. Okay?"

"Thanks so much. I don't know how I'll ever repay you for this."

"Get some food for yourself, I know you haven't eaten."

Kaine made her feel real better, they talked and he made her forget about Aimery for the time being, which Jordan wanted.

Shina pulled up and the girls told her that Jordan had run off. "That's okay. I know where she is. She called her mom, and said that she wouldn't be coming with us. She'd be over later."

The girls and Aimery got in; they drove to Aimery's house and dropped him off. He kissed Demeter on the cheek goodnight. Then went into his house.

"You know Kaine, I should be there at the celebration with my mom."

"That's a girl. C'mon I'll take ya there."

When they got out after paying their bills that Kaine made her have him pay for her meal. She then noticed that he was the one who almost ran her over. He drove her to the Morven house. He kissed her again on the cheek and advised her to forget about Aimery, that he wasn't worthy of someone so beautiful.

She walked in and didn't look at Demeter at first she went over and hugged her mom. She noticed that there were lots of other people around from the coven. There at least had to be about twenty-five people in the coven all together.

"I couldn't not come. I know how important this was to you. I couldn't do that to you."

Demeter took what she said to her mother personally. If she was a true friend she knew that Jordan did like him, so she shouldn't have done that. Now she felt really bad knowing that she truly loved him. Demeter went over to Jordan, she knew Jordan was going to be extremely mad at her. "Jordan I'm so sorry I wouldn't have said yes if I knew how much you liked him."

"Don't worry about it. Someone helped me about my jealousy. You and Aimery should  be together. I'm the one who should be sorry. So when are we gonna celebrate?" She was still hurt, but the sting of it was beginning to die down for the moment.

Demeter was really taken back by her reaction. She was afraid that Jordan was never ever going to speak to her again, but now, she was all fine about it. Whoever talked to her, and help her out really is a miracle worker.

The table was decorated, as an altar would be, with a black velvet tablecloth, and a caldron as a centerpiece filled with water and floating black candles inside. Around the caldron they had five black pillar candles. They had a turkey, with roasted potatoes, corn bread, and red onion and beet salad for dinner. Along with either cider or peppermint tea to drink and hazelnut cookies or pumpkin pie for desert.

The food was exceptional. Tallulah and Hestia had cooked and made everything themselves. All the vegetables and fruits were grown in their garden and they harvested them themselves. Tallulah was a self-made woman for one who is going on seventy-six, and Hestia could always see herself like that when she would be Gram Tallulah's age.

Jordan was really glad that she didn't miss this, she was glad Kaine had helped her. Even though the only thing he really did was point her in the right direction and open her eyes. It was everything in the world that everyone tries to do when they try to help someone in her situation.

Then after they were satisfied and dined they began the ceremony. They went outside and made a large bonfire that pointed towards the lake.

"This is a New Year, and this ceremonial rite is cast to give you a magickal time to prepare new desires, new hopes, and new dreams."

Tallulah took out vials of oil as she spoke. She spilled drops of each one in the fire. Rosemary and Sandalwood. Then she took out a bowl full of crushed up herbs. She gave everyone a black pouch. She filled each one with the substance equally in the bowl.

"For this celebration, take this consecrated paper and write a desire, a wish, a dream, a goal. When you are done place it in the pouch."

Everyone did as Tallulah said, and they all seemed to end at the same time.

"Then you will repeat after me this spell, when we are done we throw the bag into the fire."

Tallulah began to speak the spell. Her voice was so rhythmic it was almost hypnotizing. The other girls, Vera, and the rest of the coven knew this ritual, but this all was basically for Jordan. Though she has been studding this ceremony since she got her book.

Blessed be the dying year
Time to end all pain and all fear
Enter now New Year, begin your birth
Guide me through the dark, to Mother Earth

Then they held their bags above their heads and began the second part to this blessed ritual.

Blessed be the new born year
Time to bring love and new beginnings here
Enter now New Year, begin the new spirit
Sing your awaking song, and let us hear it

Then they took their bags and threw them in the sacred fire, and spoke the last phrases of the ceremony.

Blessed be our new found desires
Time to bring them in from fire
Enter now New Year, begin the new light
Aid us in our quest to guide us through the night

The fire seemed to dance and twist sending a message to the God and Goddess telling them to be fair to these devoted witches.

After they were done they spent the rest of the night telling stories from the past. Even some ghost stories seemed to pop in and out. Tallulah was still really truly worried about the Great Good and the Equal Evil as she cloaked her fears when she laughed along with the others.
