Chapter Six: The Lady of the Oracle

Demeter was not really convinced that Jordan was over Aimery like she said she was. She really was totally in love with him, how could her feelings just let go so soon? Demeter still didn't want this to interfere in her relationship, with Aimery and Jordan. She just hoped she was doing the right thing.

It was Tallulah's turn to share a story. It was about a beautiful Lady of the Lake, and how she had come to this particular lake a two centuries ago and had saved the Morven and other families within the coven from being hunted down and killed. No one knew if the Lady of the Lake was a true supernatural being, like that of the lady of the lake in the King Arthur legends, or a spirit of a witch, or just a regular person who had saved them.

Jordan thought this was the most interesting fire, and most of the time Tallulah spoke she spent most of her time gazing into the fire. Watching, manipulating it with her eyes to make it as if there were maidens in there dancing. Though some how she could still hear Tallulah's every word.

Tallulah went on about how the Lady of the Lake had hid the people in a cave inside the hill on the beach. Jordan peeked her eyes up from watching the fire maidens. Could this possibly be her inner sanctum? When Tallulah took a breath Jordan found this to be a great time to interrupt and ask a question.

"What happened to that cave, you know inside the hill?"

"No one has been able to find it. Most likely when the tide rose it washed in and made the walls soft and they caved in. Thank the Goddess no one was in there when that happened."

Jordan nodded her head looking back to the fire maidens who had now disappeared because the wind blew softly. "How big was this cavern? If anyone were to find it you know. What was so special about it too?"

Tallulah laughed at her curiosity. "You'll find out! Let me finish girl!"

They all laughed.

Jordan looked deep into the fire as the wind died down and created her fire maidens once again. Somehow they seemed to calm her. Normally she would have been thinking all night about what had happened with Aimery, Demeter, and even how kind Kaine was, but the fire maidens wiped the board every time it arose in her mind.

Tallulah continued. "When our ancestors got into the cavern where the Lady of the Lake had led them their eyes filled with surprise and wonder. It was glorious! The grayish violet rocks seemed to sparkle with silver and at the center of the cavern was a ball of light. I don't, and they didn't know really how to describe it. It had all the colours of the rainbow, yet it seemed to be one colour but not. It floated just three feet off the ground. They didn't realize what it was 'til it spoke."

"It spoke?!" All of her granddaughters said with surprise. Jordan just kept quiet listening.  Tallulah and Vera laughed. They both knew the story by heart and it was exciting to see and hear the girl's expressions.

"Yes. It spoke, but through the lips of the Lady." Tallulah said as she drank some water. "It was the Oracle of the Moon Goddesses, or so the Lady of the Lake called it. It warned them of the people that hunted them, how they could survive this. The Oracle knew though some of them would not follow its orders and they were caught and hung or burnt at the stake. This saddened the Lady of the Lake and she cried tears that flooded the people's homes. The remaining witches lived through this because all our houses were upon this hill."

Jordan was amazed by this story. She wondered if that she dug in her sanctum that maybe she too could get to the Oracle of the Moon Goddesses or find the Lady of the Lake. Something like that couldn't be kept underground. Though she wanted to keep her sanctum a secret. She would dig, and if she found the mighty Oracle she would ask it if she would have to bring the others.

The next day November first, it was a Thursday. Jordan went to school and the only thing she could think about all day long was the Oracle, the Lady, and trying to find it. As soon as the bell rung she ran to her locker and grabbed the books she needed tonight and her black duster jacket. She was almost in the bus when she ran into Kaine. He smiled and apologized for bumping into her. She smiled back and dashed on the bus. He wondered what she was so happy about. Then again he'd be happy to come home if he had a real home. With real parents that actually gave a damn about him. He sighed and got onto his bus.

Jordan sat in a seat all by herself, knowing someone would join her anyway. It was not who she expected though. It was Aimery. She looked at him weirdly, Skrina had told her she told him about how much she liked him. So now he knew. She felt so embarrassed.

"So, what are you so happy about today?" Aimery said, he knew obviously things had patched up, either that, or she wasn't thinking of them.

"Nothing, well, I got a new CD and I haven't listened to it yet and I'm really eager to get home and listen to it!"

"All this excitement for a CD? You must really like music." He said raising an eyebrow.

"Of course I do! Music is my life! Anyway, why are you sitting with me instead of your girlfriend?"

Aimery was shocked. Either she really, really liked that CD a whole lot or she didn't mind that they were dating. Man these girls were really strange. That's why he liked them so much! "I wanted to talk to you. You know to make sure you were okay about last night…" He knew he shouldn't have mentioned it.

"I know you know how I felt about you. I really feel embarrassed, but when I think about it know I feel even more stupid acting the way I did. I mean I didn't have any claim on you. So I'm okay, I'm not mad. I'm happy for Demeter and you. You two are my friends, and I'd rather you be with her than any of those snobby girls!" She said lying. Of course she still felt for him, but it wasn't as extreme as it was before. At least she was taking in some, of what she was saying.

"Thanks," Aimery laughed. "Anyway you really think I would go out with those girls? Are you crazy? Who knows what they have or where they've been!" They both laughed and Demeter came on the bus. Jordan motioned for him to sit with her. He nodded he head and gave Jordan a quick squeeze.

Hestia came over and sat next to her, witnessing the whole scene. She laughed as she looked at Jordan. "You are the best liar I know."

Jordan laughed and put her index finger to her lip implying her to be quiet. Hestia giggled.

"Well, you are…" She whispered.

"WELL, no one needs to know, any anyway it is helping me get over it."

"That's sorta a good thing, you know, so you're not stressed out."

Jordan smiled and took out her sketchpad and started doing a little doodle of a beautiful maiden coming out of the fire. The same dancing fire maidens she imagined last night. Hestia was busy talking to her sister who sat across from them. They were talking about some boy that they both drooled over. One of the boys they were with at the dance.

The bus ride seemed so long as she closed up her drawing pad and put it away in her book bag. Finally it got to her stop. She ran all the way home without saying bye to anyone. The girls looked at each other funny; Jordan usually didn't do that. Aimery told them about the CD, then they laughed. Hestia then laughed to herself. I wonder what really is up. She thought. Well, as I said, she's the best liar I know.

Jordan ran into the house and then into her room. Vera was in the kitchen making some spaghetti for supper. Jordan got changed into something she considered junk clothes and went into the living room. Her mom looked at her funny, but Jordan just smiled. "I'm off to the beach to collect some things I need for a spell I'm working on. I'll be back before supper is ready."

Vera just nodded and Jordan dashed out of the cottage. She went over to the side of the cottage and got a bucket, flashlight, and a pickax. She headed down to the beach and reached her cavern. She knew she couldn't do all of it, most of it during the day, someone would see her and try to see what she was doing.

She went inside her cavern, locking the door behind her, not before lighting some candles. Then she got all her magick tools and put them aside out of her way. Then she raised the pickax high above her head and stroked the soil wall. She gathered in the bucket the dirt, and every time the bucket got full, she looked out her door making sure no one was coming, then took the bucket to the water and dumped it. She looked at her watch about the fifth bucket. She would have to go home now. She blew out the candles and left the bucket and pickax there, but took the flashlight with her. She was going to need that.

She opened the door and her mom saw what a mess she was. She simply laughed. "Find what you're looking for? I hope you're not digging up the beach."

Jordan laughed to herself. "No, I'm not digging up the beach. Only one hole that's all. I left the things I needed where I know where they are. I'll get them tomorrow." Jordan went into the bathroom with some clean clothes and showered quickly. Then her and her mother sat down to a lovely meal.

After she ate she went into her room to do her homework. She had some Math, some English, and a little bit of Science left over from what she didn't finish in study hall. She waited later in the evening for her mom to fall asleep. Then she snuck out of the house, flashlight in hand. She walked out on the porch and headed down the street.

"Where are you going at this hour of the night?" Asked a familiar male voice.

"Aimery, you scared the bejesus out of me! Don't do that again!" She flashed the light at him.

He laughed a little, then straightened his face when Jordan gave him a glare. "So where are you going this hour? Does your mom know where you're going?"

"I'm going to get something I left on the beach if it means anything to you." She sounded kind of irritated.

"Reow! What'd I say? I was just watchin' out for you. Something tells me you're still upset about Demeter and I."

Jordan shook her head. "No. I'm not upset! What do I have to do to convince you of that?!"

She started down the street ignoring him, but he followed her. She quickly turned around, when she did that the light from the flashlight in his face. He yelled a little and covered his face. She swore his eyes shined red, like when a light shines in animals eyes.

"Would you keep it down?! And not follow me!" Jordan said in a loud whisper.

"Ah ha! So you're mom doesn't know you're out of the house! At least let me go with you, so I know you'll be okay."

Jordan growled to herself. "Fine."

She remembered she had one of her necklaces in her pocket because earlier in the school day the clasp had broke. She would claim that she found that and then they'd be off, and maybe she could sneak out again a little later.

They went on the beach and about ten minutes she called out to him holding up the shining silver strand that looked like a moon goddesses hair with a small heart tangled into it. They went back to her house and he went up the street after she went into her door. She laid on her bed waiting a bit, but she fell asleep.

She woke up to the sound of a loud buzzing, like a thousand bees inside her head. She threw the alarm clock across the room. She got up rubbing her head and eyes with her hands. Wiping the sleep out of them. She could smell pancakes from under her door, she knew her mom was up cooking away.

Jordan got up and got her clothes she was going to wear for today. A pretty rich purple and pink tie-die shirt and black baggy jeans. She saw that she had an extra half-hour since some how her clock went off early. She went out to the living room into the kitchen. She kissed her mom on the cheek and went into the bathroom.

The bathroom was a joke. The size of a closet, and there was no tub, only a shower stall. She took off her soiled clothes and went into the shower. She first shampooed her long fiery hair. Then just as she closed her eyes to enjoy the beating down of the water on her skin Aimery came into the shower, through the wall. He had a large knife with him. She looked at him in shock, his eyes glowing red like she swore she saw last night. He looked her naked body up and down and smiled, coming toward her with the knife. She was so sure he was going to cut her and/or kill her with it, but he grabbed her hand and put the knife in it, then disappeared.

The sound of a loud buzzing, like a thousand bees inside her head. She threw the alarm clock across the room. She looked up shocked. It was only a dream, only a dream. She convinced herself it wasn't a vision like before. It can't be, it was just because she had the thought of his eyes glowing, but it was just her eyes playing tricks with her. That's what she was convincing herself.

She smelled the scent of pancakes cooking in the kitchen. She looked through some clothes, and the only thing she had clean was a rich purple and pink tie-die shirt, and black baggy jeans. She gulped and went through the living room and into the kitchen kissing her mom on the cheek. Déjà vu…

She cautiously looked into the shower stall as if Aimery was going to be in there. The stall was bare. She got her dirty clothes off, and got in the shower. She quickly turned around. No Aimery, it's okay, it's just a dream. She just laughed to herself. She had to be kidding. She turned on the water and washed her hair, then ready to wash her body she remembered he came out at this time. She turned around. No one was there. So it was just a dream. She let a sigh of relief out.

She got ready and did her hair and makeup. Ate with her mother and was off to school. She was so happy it was Friday, this meant hopefully if people wouldn't follow her, she could get some work done looking for the Oracle.
