Making your Altar
1. Find a place where you want to set it up. This area must be a place that won’t be disturbed. Try and pick a private place like the corner of your room or a special room in the house. I have a portable altar. I only take it out when I’m using it.(Remember that this area will be sacred to you and will contain energy.)
2. When you find your ‘place’, clean it! I mean vacuum and dust! I suggest sprinkling some salt water around the area. Chant while you clean and sprinkle. Keep only bright thoughts in your head. Remember you’re consecrating your area….it’s not time to think about anything else.
3. Next, you’ll have to find your 4 directions. The elements will have to be set up in the 4 corners. * You may want to use a compass or just go out at night and find that north star*
4. Now, lay out your objects representing the elements to the four elements and ask for their guiding presence. Here are just a few examples I put on my altar (every Witch is different)
Direction Element Example
North...... Earth....... rock, soil, dry leaves
South...... Fire....... lit candle
East...... Air....... incense, feather
West...... Water....... bowl of water
5. Feel free now to place objects on your altar that are special to you or necessary to your workings. I like to put my cauldron in the center or use it as the Water for the West Element.
Your altar is finished, for now. I have found that altars change with my mood, my spirital growth and by the spells I’m crafting. Nothing is ever set in stone. Do what feels right for you.
So mote it be! It is done!
