Bathroom Crafts

No, I'm not talking about crazy toilet paper holders that look like dolls in crocheted dresses. I'm talking about the stuff we use in the bathroom:

  • Bath Beeds
  • Do it Yourself Ointment
  • Everything Salve
  • Cuticle Softner
  • Glitter Gel
  • Easy Gel
  • Hand and Body Lotion
  • Easy Dandruff Treatment
  • Lemon Facial Splash
  • Rosewater
  • Fresh Breath Maker
  • Honey Lip Balm
  • Make it Yourself~Lip Balm
  • Herbal List

  • Bath Beeds

    1/4 C baking soda
2 T citric acid (called "sour salt" in the kosher food aisle)
    1 T borax
    2 T Powdered sugar
2 T almond oil or olive oil
1 t vitamin E (or skin so soft)
1/4 t essential or perfume oil (I recommend Camphor, Vanilla or Lavender)

Combine dry ingredients. Drizzle almond oil previously mixed with vitamin E and fragrance and mix well. Take teaspoon sized globs and form into balls with your fingers. (Mixture is very crumbly, so do the best you can-it may be best to form the balls into a candy mold for shape) Place these on wax paper and let harden 2 or 3 hours, then reshape again. Let dry completely, about 10 days. Store in an airtight container. To use, drop 1 or 2 into the bath and enjoy.

    Do It Yourself Ointment

Melt 9 parts petroleum jelly in the microwave or in a double boiler.
Stir in 1 part dried herbs of choice and heat for about two hours, or until the herbs are crisp.
Strain through cheesecloth and squeezing the last bit through the cheesecloth.
    (Mixture will be hot!)
Pour the strained mixture while still warm into clean, glass storage jars. You can find great little jars at dollar stores or try using baby food jars.

    Honey Pot Lip Balm

    2 tsp. olive oil
    1/2 tsp. Beeswax
    1/2 tsp. cocoa butter
    1/2 tsp. Honey
3 drops essential oil of orange
    1 vitamin E capsule

Measure oil, beeswax and cocoa butter into a glass or enamel pan.
Melt over low heat. A hotplate works well and reduces the risk of overheating the oils.
Put the balm into tiny jars (found at craft stores)
Place it in a pan of water to melt the waxes.
Stir the mixture often until the wax is melted. Remove from heat and stir in the honey and essential oil. Pinch open the vitamin E capsule and squeeze the contents into the mixture.
Stir well. Pour the mixture into containers.
    Label after it has solidified.
If you want your honey to be dispersed throughout the lip balm you will need to stir it as it is solidifying.

    Variations:
Choose any essential oil that appeals to you. Tea Tree oil is good for cold sores and chapped lips.
Make your lip balm using an herbal oil in place of the olive oil. Melissa (lemon balm) and Calendula are two of many herbs that can add healing and soothing properties.
Alkanet will make red lip balm. Start with one tablespoon to 1/2 cup oil. After heat extraction, check the color. If it is not dark enough for you add more Alkanet and go through the heat extraction process again.
Your lip balm will turn out several shades lighter than the color of your oil.

TOP Make Your Own Lip Balm

    Ingredients:
An easy guide for creating your own lip balm recipes is this:
    20% Beeswax
25% of an oil that is solid at room temperature oil (Coconut, Shea Butter, etc.)
15% of an oil that is brittle at room temperature oil (Cocoa Butter, etc.)
40% of an oil that is liquid oil at room temperature (Almond, Olive, Avocado, etc.)

    Instructions: Weigh all ingredients.
Melt in a double boiler until all items are melted. Beeswax is the item that will take the longest to melt.
Use caution and never heat over direct flame. Oils and wax get hot very quickly and the temperature can climb higher than you suspect.
Once the oils are melted use a plastic dropper to dispense the solution into lip balm tubes or small tins.
Fill tubes until the inside screw is barely covered. Allow to firm for a few minutes.
Once the solution cools there will be a slight indentation from shrinkage.
You can then top off the tube with more oil/wax solution.
Cap when all tubes are filled.
This recipe gives the basic idea, so feel free to experiment to create your own special blends. If you find that some of the oils are hard to locate, you can simply use a liquid oil with beeswax. Adjust the proportions to achieve the desired firmness.
