Taxonomic review, general morphology and chaetotaxy of the order Thermosbaenacea are discussed in detail, and a chaetotaxic classification, modified after Watling (1989), is presented.
Thirty-four species are recognized, belonging to seven genera and four families; a new family, Tulumellidae, and a new genus, Tethysbaena, are proposed.

As regard the biogeography, it is suggested that the present distribution of thermosbaenaceans is the risult of vicariance.
A list and a key for all the species, is presented together with former publications, distribution and ecology.
