INTRODUCTION TO ADULT CPR

STEPS IN ADULT CPR

1. CONFIRM UNCONSCIOUSNESS
(shake and shout)

2. CALL 911

3. REPOSITION THE PATIENT AND OPEN THE AIRWAY
(head-tilt chin-lift or modified jaw thrust)

4. CONFIRM RESPIRATORY ARREST
(look listen and feel)

5. RESCUE BREATHING

6. CONFIRM PULSELESSNESS

7. CHEST COMPRESSIONS

8. CONTINUE UNTIL HELP ARRIVES

CPR is used to keep the body alive when the heart has stopped. It will not raise the
dead (or even revive the recently living), but it can keep the body viable until the
patient reaches the hospital, where medications and defibrillation can restart the heart.
