Clinical hour experiences which count toward certification include:

• 1. Time spent in the athletic training room.
• 2. Preparing for, and covering practices.
• 3. Preparing for, and covering games.

Hours which do not count toward certification include:

• 1. Hours not spent under the direct supervision of an NATA certified athletic trainer.
• 2. Hours spent traveling with a team.
• 3. Hours in sites which have not been approved as an affiliated site.
• 4. Hours which have been earned more than five years prior to the certification examination.
• 5. Hours spent in "Sports Medicine" or physical therapy clinics (as cited in the Joint Review Committee - Athletic Training CAAHEP Guidelines)

  Documentation of Clinical Hours

  

  It is the students responsibility to record and submit the hours accumulated for certification. An example of the "Clinical Hour Recording" form is below. Complete the form as follows:

  • 1. Write your name at the top of the form.
  • 2. Indicate the first working day of the week which you are recording (month/day/year). Please note that Monday is considered to be the first day of the week.
  • 3. Indicate the sport to which you are assigned. If you had multiple assignments that week, record each sport and the accumulated number of hours worked on a separate line. If you are working with a sport which has a female/male counterpart, please indicate the gender with which you are working.
  • 4. At the conclusion of each week the student must have the supervisor initial, and therefore verify, the hours worked. If you are negligent in obtaining these initials the supervisor retains the right to deny verification. In this case, the hours worked for that week will not be included in your total.
  • 5.The "Clinical Hour Recording" form is to be submitted to the athletic training curriculum director no later than one week after the conclusion of each semester. However, the student may submit the forms as they become filled, or at the conclusion of a sport's season prior to the end of the semester.
  • 6. Late reports will not be accepted and will not count towards your certification hours.
