April 1, 1946 (Mon)

April Fool! Also Spring Vacation. Not much of a vacation though since I went to work at 8 at Lincoln Life. Anna May was on the same bus I was. Dorothy M. still isn't back to work. I worked fairly hard this morning Evelyn and I went downtown at noon and met Betty Greenwood at Walgreen's - we had to wait quite awhile so we didn't get back to work on time. I typed a letter to Jackie this afternoon. Evelyn and I went downtown after work - I got home about 6. My government check for taxes came today - $43.60 - not bad eh? Mother started making my bedspread and dressing table skirt - she put a ruffle on my mirror which looks darling - Dad put last coat of paint on my dressing table. I read "Green Dolphin Street" and went to bed about 10.

April 2, 1946 (Tues)

It was a little chillier today than it has been. I have to leave at 20 after 7 now to catch my bus - a half hr. before I leave to go to school. I worked just fairly hard this morning. At noon Evelyn, Anna May, Betty and I went to the YMCA cafeteria for dinner - we got thru in plenty of time and the meal was very very good too. This afternoon I worked like mad trying to get the labor report for March done. Evelyn and I went downtown after work - I got home about a quarter of 6. Dot and Bob came in this evening - they were here till about 8. I went over to take care of the kids - Midge, Dave and Jimmie from about 7:30 to 10:30 - I read some more of "Green Dolphin St." then came home and took my shower and to bed about 11.

April 3, 1946 (Wed)

It was pretty chilly out today. I worked pretty hard this morning - finally finished the labor report. Just Evelyn, Betty and I ate lunch together at YMCA. We had time to look around downtown for awhile after lunch and we also saw Lucile - didn't have time to talk to her much though. I didn't work very hard this afternoon - not at all after 4:30 - typed a note to Evelyn. Came straight home from work. This evening I started putting things in the drawers of my dressing table when Howard, Ahleen, girls and Bob and Virginia Layman and David came over - first I've seen Bob since he was discharged. I read some more of "Green Dolphin Street and went to bed about 10.

April 4, 1946 (Thurs)

I got sick a little after midnight and I do mean sick - I felt absolutely rotten from then till Dr. Conley came at 9. Of course I didn't go to work today - Mother called Miss O'Rourke and told her I wouldn't be in. I slept practically all morning since I didn't get much sleep during the night. Mother finished my dressing table skirt - gosh, but it looks nice. She is almost finished with the bedspread too - they all look so nice together. I finished reading "Green Dolphin Street." That was certainly a good book. This evening I shined my saddles (about time), finally addressed an envelope for the letters I wrote to Jackie and I also cleaned my combs. (Pen is sort of inky, isn't it?) Its after ten now so night!

April 5, 1946 (Fri)

I went to work this morning. It was pretty chilly today. Miss McCrory, Evelyn, and Miss O'Rourke all told me I looked pale. Miss McCrory told me to take it easy and then she dictates 4 letters and gives me a mess of work - ha - take it easy! As you can guess I wass very busy today. Evelyn, Betty and I ate at the YMCA at noon. Afterwords we looked at records at Wolf and D's appliance store - then back to work this afternoon - I didn't get caught up on all my work. After work Evelyn and I met Betty and we went to Carrol's and had a soda. I finally mailed my letter to Jackie. Mother finished my bedspread - they all look super. This evening I took care of the kids - I read the American magazine but went to sleep early - they came home about 10.

April 6, 1946 (Sat)

I got up about 7:30. It rained during the night, but is a little warmer today. This morning Mother, Dad and I went to the Hardware Store and got paint for our bedroom walls - light blue for mine and light green for Mother and Dad's. We also went to the grocery. We came home then - I built a fire in the utility room. I called Oddra and we talked for quite awhile. Mother and I straightened the house up and I washed my hair. Mother and Dad went away with Alma and Ray so I stayed witht the kids for a couple hours this afternoon. The rest of the afternoon I worked on things for my party and planned it more in detail. I ate supper over to Margaret and Jess's, did dishes over there then went home and did dishes. This evening I took care of the kids again and read another American Magazine and read some more the of the Party Book.

April 7, 1946 (Sun)

I got up about 7:30. The first thing we did was to move everything out of my bedroom and Jess painted the ceiling white. Then Mother, Dad and I got cleaned up and we went out to Aunt Elma's for dinner. Martha Adams, her boyfriend and Lu and Ken Benson and their son Chick were all here from Pennsylvania. Tommy, Jimmy, and Danny were out there this afternoon too. This afternoon Tommy, Jimmy and I played games. Sounds boring, but I did enjoy myself. I even read comic books today. We got home about 8:30. Margaret and Jess went down to Dot and Bob's this afternoon. This evening I just listened to radio and I went to bed about 10. Its raining now - a little after 10.

April 8, 1946 (Mon)

Back to school again after vacation. Miss Spiegel isn't going to be here all week and we won't have a substitute - we're supposed to work on our term papers. I got a note to go see Gross, but she just wanted to know if I had taken the Pepsi-Cola Scholarship test. We had transcription in Shhd. and Typing. Evelyn , Donna Lou, Kathleen, Mary Lou, Doretta and I ate lunch together. Evie and I got to work at 1. Dorothy still isn't back - I thought sure she would be. Evie and I went downtown after work. This evening Dad and Jess finished painting my walls light blue - they look very nice. I studied my Shhd. and worked on those posters some more for my party. Margaret and Jess brought Dot's typwriter back for me yesterday and also a baby picture of Bob and one when Charlie was 14. Well, its after 10 now - night!

April 9, 1946 (Tues)

It was rather chilly again today. Of course we didn't have a teacher again in Health. Patent medicines is really very interesting reading. We had an assembly 3rd period - it was very very good. A woman Dr. - anthropologist gave a talk. We had typing tests in Typing 4th and as usual I did terrible. Evelyn, Donna Lou, Kathleen and I ate lunch in cafeteria. Betty Greenwood got on the same bus today - Dorothy still wasn't at work. Evelyn and I went downtown after work - I got wallpaper border for my room and a cookie jar for Margaret. Then I went to the bowling alley and met Dot and Bob and came home with them. Jess painted Mother and Dad's bedroom tonight. I think I'm going home with Dot, Bob and Charlie Sat. night - I hope! I took my shower and its just ten now.

April 10, 1946 (Wed)

Still pretty chilly out. I didn't get too much studying done in Health - Ruth Moon was bound she wanted to talk so we talked. We had transcription in Shhd. and Typing. Today is mailing letter day and believe it or not I got all 4 letters and I think fairly right. Mary Lou, Doretta, Evelyn, Donna Lou, Kathleen and I ate lunch. Then Evie, Kathleen and I went to work. Betty got on the same bus. Still no Dorothy. I had a fairly busy afternoon. After work Evie and I went downtown and I got some barrettes for Midge and myself and straight pins. I got home about 6. I took care of Midge, Dave, and Jimmie. While over there I studied my Shorthand and typed some lists for one of the games for my party. I got home about 11:30 - gosh, I'm worried about my party, diary.

April 11, 1946 (Thurs)

Very very chilly and windy today. We had guidance today in 316. A man from the employment office gave a talk. During Health I started "The Good Earth," talked to Ruthie and ate potato chips, terrible isn't it? We had a test in Shorthand - I don't think I did too bad on it. We had to write a composition in Typing. National Honor had a meeting after 4th - we are going to have our assembly April 30th. I had to eat my lunch while we waited on the bus. Betty didn't get on the bus today. This afternoon I typed letter for Miss Walker most of the time. After work Evie and I went downtown - I bought some tape measures and toy pistols and tried to buy flashlight bulb - but no success. I worked on stuff for my party then took my shower and its after 10:30 so good-night.

April 12, 1946 (Fri)

Much warmer today. I read some more of "Good Earth" and talked to Ruthie and ate potato chips in Health. If only all Health classes were like that. We had a Pan-American assembly which was absolutely horrible. It was the most boring thing - we did get out of Shhd. though. Evie and I ate lunch in cafeteria - my chair broke down with me. We got to work at 1. I had a mess of work left over from yesterday so I slaved today, but still didn't get done. I went downtown after work, but didn't buy anything. Got home about a quarter of 6. This evening I took care of the kids. Over there I read some more of "Good Earth" and worked on posters for party. Margaret and Jess came home about 11:30.

April 13, 1946 (Sat)

Man! What a day! I got up at 7:30. I washed my hair first, Mother and I put wallpaper border in bedrooms and finished cleaning the house. I finally got all the things ready for my party. This afternoon I called Charlie and had him bring a boy for Evelyn. Then I got ready myself. I was just about dead. Dad and I went after Evelyn about 7:30 - then Mom and Dad left. Betty and Erv came first - 8:30, then Janet and Paul, then finally Bob, Dot, Charlie, and Karl (Sammy) Peden. We played games. Dot, Bob, Paul and Evie dressed up in some old costumes and we rigged up some lighting and took some pictures of them. We ate and made a record. Betty, Erv, Janet and Paul left about 1:30 then the rest of us made another record. Everybody really had a swell time and it was a success! We took Evie home then. I went home with Dot and Bob. Charlie and I sat in front - he had his arm around me and held my hand all the way. Sammy asked me for a date but I think he was kidding. We went to bed at 3:30.

April 14, 1946 (Sun)

Dot got me up at a quarter of 8. I was still very sleepy. After breakfast I washed the dishes while Dorothy started dinner. Charlie came over about 9:30 and was over all morning. Mom, Dad, Margaret, Jess and kids came down about 10:30 for dinner. This afternoon Harriet, Fern (Ray's girl) and her sister came over to Dot's. We left for home about 4:30 - got home about 6. I slept part of the way home - I was so terribly tired. I took my shoes and hose off and put on my mocassins and old dress - my feet were killing me. Aunt Blanche and Uncle Leon came over about 7:30 and I was doing my homework when who comes about 8 but Sammy - I was so surprised. I didn't know what to do - I got cleaned up and we went to the Palace and saw "Seventh Veil" - not too good. Got home about 11:30 - Sammy tried to kiss me good- night, but I wouldn't let him. I've got a date with him for next Sun. and a blind date for Evie.

April 15, 1946 (Mon)

Back to school again after the hectic weekend and I do mean hectic! It was raining so Mother took me down to busline - Evelyn says she thinks she can go next Sunday. We had an assembly today - snakes, skunks, and spiders - it was good. No transcription in Shorthand. Donna Lou, Evie, Kathleen and I ate lunch together - Evie and I talked about the party and next Sunday most of the time. I worked hard this afternoon, but still didn't get caught up on my work. I got paid today - drew $24.48. After work Evie and I went down to Carl Rose's and got my class ring - birthday present from Mom, Dad and myself. I'll get it Sat. - very pretty, $14.50. I got some bracelets from Aunt Elma and mirror and brush from Dot and Bob. I got a birthday card from Jackie. I studied Shhd. and wrote minutes for last Job's Daughters meeting. Its close to 11 now so night. I saw Dwight downtown - he just said "Hello, Betty."

April 16, 1946 (Tues)

Happy Birthday, Betty! Eighteen today - you're certainly getting along in years. Oh what a beautiful day - and it was too. In homeroom Donna Lou and Evie Lou gave me a bottle of cologne. The kids then sang "Happy Birthday" to me. We had typing tests in Typing - I had 62.6 on one - not too bad. Kathleen, Evie and I ate lunch in cafeteria. Betty Jane got on our bus and she gave me a bath powder and soap mitt set - very cute. I worked very hard at work. We got Evie a pair of shoes after work. I got a letter from Charlie - he wants a date for next Sunday, but he'll just have to wait till the Sunday after. I also got a birthday card from Anna May. I went to Job's Daughters - we almost had a wreck going down - we got out about 8:30 and Dolores Perry had her Dad's car and was going to take Betty Lou and I home when we got the bumper caught on another car and had to go to Police Station - everything turned out alright though -- its after 11 now night!

April 17, 1946 (Wed)

It was pretty warm today again - I wrote a letter to Charlie in the library. We got our grade cards today - I got Health A-, Shorthand A, and Typing B. We had transcription in Shhd. and Typing. Evelyn thought my letter from Charlie was so cute - I do too. Doretta, Mary Lou, Kathleen, Donna Lou, Evie and I ate lunch together. Dorothy Murphy came into the office this afternoon but not to work - she has low blood pressure and irregular heartbeats now - poor kid - she's so down in the dumps. Evie and I went downtown after work. I got home about 5. I got 2 packages through the mail today - one was a box of Mother Washington Chocolates from Pauline and the other a darling Coty set (powder base, powder, lipstick and rouge) from Jackie. I wrote a letter to Jackie, ironed a blouse (we blew a fuse out) then took my shower and its after 10 now.

April 18, 1946 (Thurs)

Another fairly nice day. Seniors had to go to 316 during homeroom - some girl from Social Security Board talked to us. Our term papers are due tomorrow in Health, but I won't have mine done. We had a test in Shorthand 3rd and then typing tests in Typing. I typed 74.5 goss words on one - 64.5 wpm after errors were taken off. Evelyn, Donna Lou, Kathleen and I ate lunch together. I didn't work too hard this afternoon - Miss McCrory said I may go on fulltime permanently in Personnel in June. Golly, I hope so. Evie and I went downtown after work - I got a formal slip. Nobody was home when I got home - Mom and Dad went to show - I started putting things in drawers of the new chest of drawers and I read some more of "Good Earth." Its after 10 again.

April 19, 1946 (Fri)

Another fairly warm day - Good Friday. Second period we got to listen to the Speech contests (Senior) so of course we didn't have a class in Health. In Shorthand and Typing we had 100 wpm - 5 minute dictation. I think I did pretty well on it. We got out of school at 12 - cafeteria was closed so Evelyn and I sat on the floor by my locker and ate our lunch. We got to work before 1. Miss O'Rourke and Miss McCrory went to Church this afternoon so I had to stay in the office. Evelyn had to work overtime so I had to come straight home from work. This evening I wrote my term paper for Health - practically just copied it word for word out of books and magazines. It was after ten before I retired - getting upsy aren't I?

April 20, 1946 (Sat)

Very warm day - hope its like this tomorrow. I built a fire in utility room right after breakfast. Mother and I typed Easter eggs and I washed my hair. Margaret brought the kids over while they went downtown. I typed my term paper up - all finished - I shortened the hem in the dress I got a couple of weeks ago. This afternoon I went downtown and picked up my class ring, I'm afraid now that it a little too small. I also got the pictures taken Sat. night - fairly good - I got Easter baskets for nieces and nephew, fingernail polish, paper-plates, dishcloths, dickies and some kind of stones which grow in a vase - very cute and mysterying. This evening I did nothing outside of take my bath and read the paper. Its after 10 again, Night!

April 21, 1946 (Sun)

Happy Easter! I got up about 7:30. I ran the sweeper again and dusted the living room while Mother finished getting the food ready. I got cleaned up then. Dot and Bob came first. Dot brought a letter for me from Charlie. He is coming up for sure next Sunday. Howard, Ahleen, girls, Margaret, Jess and kids, Aunt Elma, Uncle Mac, Sarah and her 2 kids from Erie, Jimmie and Tommy, and Don and Nancy were here for dinner - 24 altogether. Everybody left about 5. It was beautiful day out and so warm! I got cleaned up again then. Sammy and Herm Conning were supposed to be here at 7:30, but didn't make it till after 8:30 - I was kinda mad, but soon got over it. Herm is better looking than Sammy but much quieter. We picked Evie up and went to see "Hold That Blonde". Afterwards we went to Evelyn's. We had loads of fun - it seems as if I've known Sammy for yeears - we get along so well - we have another date for next Sat. It was 1:30 when I got to bed. Sammy kissed me 3 times. Hubba! Hubba!

April 22, 1946 (Mon)

I was kinda sleepy when I got up this morning, but very happy. Another lovely day. We had a movie in Health and also a test - I don't know what I made on it - I forgot to take my term paper to school. We had transcription in Shorthand and Typing. Evelyn, Donna Lou, Kathleen and I ate lunch in cafeteria. Betty got on the same bus we did. I worked pretty hard at work this afternoon although it was really too nice to work. Evie and I went downtown after work. I took care of Jimmy and David while Margaret, Jess and Marjorie went to the show. Pauline came over for awhile this evening. I studied for a test in Shorthand. Oh gosh, my mind keeps wandering to Sammy - I wonder if he's thinking about me. Its not even 9:30 but I'm going to get some sleep tonight.

April 23, 1946 (Tues)

A little chillier today and rainy too. I remembered to take my term paper to school. Today was Junior High Day, but there weren't any groups in any of my classes. We had typing tests in Typing - I made 63 wpm on one. Evie wasn't here this morning. At noon Donna Lou, Kathleen, Doretta, Mary Lou and I ate lunch together. Betty got on our bus. Evie was at work this afternoon. I worked pretty hard - went down to Wolf and D's for Miss McCrory. Evie and I went downtown after work and then I went down to bowling alley and met Dot and Bob. Aunt Elma was operated on this morning and Mother was at hospital all day. She came up to bowling alley - we ate and then Mom and I went to hospital - Aunt Elma still under ether. We got home about 8:30 - Dot and Bob were here. I got letter from Betty Morris (England) and a birthday card and hankie from Lucy. Dot said Charlie asked about me and wanted to know if I got his letter ok. He told her something else but she wouldn't say what. Its after 10 now - night!

April 24, 1946 (Wed)

It was nice out again today. I wrote a letter to Charlie first period in the Library. I got Betty G and mine announcements this morning. We had a music assembly 3rd period - no Shhd. then - it was pretty good. We had a comprehensive test in Typing - I hate them! Mary Lou, Donna Lou, Evelyn, Doretta, Kathleen and I ate lunch in cafeteria and we took some pictures at noon. I worked very hard this afternoon. I went downtown after work and got a zipper for my green formal and took my ring to Carll Rose's to have the engraving finished - I won't get it for 2 weeks - darn the luck. Betty G. was on the same bus I was coming home - she has started looking for wedding gowns. This evening I took care of the kids. I wrote up the minutes for last Job's Daughters meeting and started reading "How Green Was My Valley". Midnight when I got home.

April 25, 1946 (Thurs)

It was rainy and chilly out today. George Wass keeps teasing me in homeroom. All Seniors had to go to auditorium during homeroom - Miss Gross talked to us on self-rating ourselves. We had transcription in Shorthand and Typing. Evelyn, Donna Lou and I ate lunch in cafeteria. I just worked 2 hours this afternoon, but rather hard. At 3 I went downtown and got Dad a Gilette razor and two undershirts for his birthday today - he's 51. I went back to North Side then for SPC. We had a play and then I talked to Suter afterwards for awhile. I got home about 5 - did some typing for Jess - studied my Shhd. Roy and Alma came over - read some more of "How Green Was My Valley," took a shower, Donna Lou called - we talked for 1/2 an hour - its after 11 now.

April 26, 1946 (Fri)

Another chilly and rainy day. We're discussing communicable diseases in Health now. We had a test in Shorthand (unusual ? - no!), but one thing we didn't have transcription today. We had Typing tests 4th - I had 63.2 wpm on one. Evelyn, Donna Lou, Kathleen, and I ate lunch in cafeteria and then to work. I really slaved this afternoon. Dorothy Murphy came in for a little while - she is coming back a week from Monday, I think. Evie and I went downtown after work. I got home about a quarter of six. This evening I went over to Margaret's and Jess's and took care of the chillun. I worked some more on books for Job's Daughters and read some more of "How Green Was My Valley" - really good. I washed my hair this evening - got home about 9:30.

April 27, 1946 (Sat)

I got up about 7:30. Mother and Dad were going to the Lake, but too cold so they went riding with Roy and Alma instead. I built a fire in the utility room, put the hem in one of my dresses and finished my book up for Job's Daughters. This afternoon I went downtown and met Betty - her wedding gown is just simply gorgeous. Her aunt is going to be Matron of Honor and Evelyn and I bridesmaids. I also bought cologne for Evie, earrings for Jackie and shoes and 51 gauge nylons for myself. I got home about 4:30 and got ready for my date. Sammy came about a quarter of 8 - he brought me a corsage of white carnations. Herm couldn't come, but Evie went to show with us - Bells of St. Mays and afterwards went to her house (Herm sent her corsage like mine - her birthday today) I got home at a quarter of 2 and darn Dad was mad - said it was too late and told Sammy not to come back - that just burns me up - I liked Sammy so well too. I think Dad was very unjust.

April 28, 1946 (Sun)

I was still pretty darn mad when I got up this morning - I hardly spoke to Dad at all. Mom and Dad went to the lake with Roy, Lavon, Raymie and Elaine today - too bad they didn't go yesterday. This morning I made beds, did dishes, dusted and ran the sweeper in living room. I ate dinner over to Margaret's. I helped her with dishes then at home I built a fire in living room stove and got cleaned up myself. Pudgie called this afternoon - said that she and somebody else who wanted to meet me were coming over one of these Sundays soon - I hope she means her brother - he's just discharged from Navy and is darling. I studied Shhd. I read some more of "How Green Was My Valley". Mom and Dad came home about 5. Charlie came about a quarter after 7. We went to see "The Enchanted Forest" at Palace. Afterwards we went to Gardners. Got home about a quarter of 11 and Charlie left at a quarter after 11. He wanted to neck, but I didn't - I just let him kiss me good-night. All I could think of all day was Sammy.

April 29, 1946 (Mon)

It was rather warm today. 1st period I read more of "How Green Was My Valley." We had transcription in Shhd. and Typing - 5 letters. Evelyn wasn't in school this morning. Donna Lou, Kathleen, and I ate lunch together. Betty got on our bus. Evie was at work this afternoon. I really worked hard this afternoon. Miss McCrory still wants me to go on full-time now, but I couldn't possibly. After work Betty Lou and I went down to Masonic Temple for officer's rehearsal. It was 7 before I got home. Mother is fixing that formal Ahleen gave me - she dyed it green - it looks very nice. This evening I took care of the kids again and read some more of " how Green Was My Valley." Got a letter from a girl in Ohio today. Must get some sleep tonight - hard day ahead of me tomorrow. Night! Pat called me, she, Oddra and Betty Lou miss NHS.

April 30, 1946 (Tues)

It was very warm outside today. I wore nylons and my new shoes and pink dress to school. We had our National Honor Society assembly. We were each supposed to pin on 3 pins, but I pinned on 5 - one on a Junior girl, Betty Lou, Oddra, Nancy, and Pat's. Janet also was elected, but I ran out of pins. We had test in Shorthand and typing tests in Typing - I did horrid. Evelyn, Kathleen and I ate lunch together. Betty got on same bus we did. I got paid today - drew $18.64. I just worked till 4 then dashed home and got ready for Job's Daughters banquet - I wore the green formal with the corsage Sammy gave me. After banquet we changed into our robes and had our inspection and initiation (24 girls). We didn't get out till after 11. Mom and Dot came down after me. Dot is in town for a couple of days - she stayed all night. It was after 12 when I got to bed.
