February 1, 1945 (Thurs)
It was sort of chilly out again today. We had our test in Shorthand. I don't know what I made on it but it wasn't very good. Gloria, Jackie and I went down to Dramatics 5th period but Miss Suter wasn't there. Jackie and I took our formals for in the play with us to school this morning, and put them in Miss Shroyer's office. We kids gave our play and it went off fairly well. Miss Suter liked it so well that she wants all the copies we have of it. By the way, our play was called Lady Luck. Berry G is point recorder for SPC and she told Jackie that Miss Suter gave me the most points for that play. That makes me feel good. Maybe I'll get my "gold D" yet. I had play rehearsal then till 6:30. This evening I did my Shorthand and finished reading The Professor's House.
February 2, 1945 (Fri)
I made 90 on my test in Shorthad yesterday. I worked at the desk 2nd period in the library. We had a substitute teacher in Cl. Practice 3rd and 4th so we didn't work very hard and we also had some Twinkies we ate 4th. Pat and Oddra ate lunch with Gloria, Jackie and I again today. It seems to be getting quite a habit. This afternoon we had a short pep session. This evening Wanda, Jackie, Barbara Willis and I went to the North Side - South Side game. We left at 5:30 so we had pretty good seats. North Side won 38 - 34. N.S. is the first team that has ever won 6 consecutive city series games. After the game (It was at S.S.) we went to the Hobby House. Al's cousin Wally and Marion were there. I got home about 11.
February 3, 1945 (Sat)
Got up at 8 this morning. Margaret called me at 9. I talked to Jackie on the telephone this morning. I cleaned the bed rooms and living room this morning. I kept David for about an hour while Margaret went to the grocery. Margaret washed a few things out in the washer. Marjorie wiped a few dishes for me. David has his first tooth now. I washed some sweaters and silk hose out this afternoon and did a little ironing. Dad won $25 today in a pool at the Harvester. I was sick all evening and Doctor Conley came out about 8:30. I'm reading a book now called The Great American Family. That's all now, dear Diary. Dot Gremaux called.
February 4, 1945 (Sun)
I still didn't feel any too good today so I stayed in bed most of the day and slept. Jackie called once. Roy and Alma Gross came over for awhile in the afternoon. I studied my Shorthand and Civics in the afternoon and also wrote letters to Dwight and Lucile. My golly, nothing much has happened today. Dottie and Bud Gremaux are coming over for supper Wednesday evening. Thrill! Thrill! Al says now that he is going to get a new car. (I'd like to know where) sometime next week or the week after so he probably wouldn't see me before then. A pretty bad excuse if you ask me! Oh! he makes me so mad sometimes. Yawn! Yawn! Good-night dear diary.
February 5, 1945 (Mon)
We had a test in Shorthand today. I think I did a little better on this one than I did on the last one. Mrs. Chapman hasn't been here for quite a few days so we have been having quite an enjoyable time in Clerical Practice both 3rd and 4th. Jackie and I had almost decided to go to the movies, but then we decided not to. However, Dot and Dot Gremaux were going to go so Jackie and I decided to go to. We went to the Paramount and saw Hollywood Canteen. Dot's cousin, Pat Gremaux went along to. It was a good show (the soldier starred in the picture looks like Dwight), and we had a lot of fun. We didn't leave until 8 so we didn't get home until after 11. I got to bed at 12. Oh, hum! Yawn!
February 6, 1945 (Tues)
A little on the sleepy side this morning. Made 96 on my Shorthad test. I worked in the library 2nd. Mrs. Chapman wan't here again today. I left my house at 6:30 this evening and then I stopped off at Betty's. Then we went to Job's Daughters. Today was Job's Daughters 20th anniversary and it was sort of a party. Golly, but it lasted long from 7:30 - 10:30. I got home after 11 again and in bed at 12. Boy, there isn't going to be very much left of me if keep this up. I received a letter from Dwight dated January 9th. He thinks that he is going to be sent to the front lines to fight soon. Oh golly, now I will really worry about him. What would I do if anything would happen to Dwight?
February 7, 1945 (Wed)
Jackie and I beat Miss Shroyer to the library this morning. She was really surprised, and I'm not kidding either. I had Physical Wreckage today and was I tired when I got through that period! Mrs. Chapman was here and we had to work 3rd and 4th. We saw a movie this afternoon in Civics. Then I worked in the Library after school. I was supposed to prompt for Senior play rehearsal tonight but Jackie took my place instead since Dot and Bud Gremaux came out for supper. Boy, is he nice-looking and Dot looks wonderful in her Wave uniform. Oh now, if I were only 20. Dottie stayed all night, and I didn't get to bed until about 11:30. Good-night now. I think its about time for me to go to bed.
February 8, 1945 (Thurs)
I did some Typing for Mr. Merter today in Clerical Practice 4th. 3rd period I made 95 and 90 on my filing. Gloria, Jackie and I had Dramatics fifth period and then after that Jackie and I went to a prompters meeting. That only left us 5 minutes for lunch so all we ate was a hamburger. Betty and I went down to the Northerner room 2nd period and had out pictures taken for the Legend. I got a note in Typing 6th period to come down to the principal's office. Imagine my surprise when Miss Steiner handed me my glasses and all ten of the Senior Play tickets. Some boy had turned them in. I really didn't think I would ever get them back. Lucile called me this evening. We talked for about 15 ro 20 minutes. I wrote a nice long letter to Dwight and I do mean nice. I washed my hair this evening.
February 9, 1945 (Fri)
We had a short test in Clerical Practice. I made 95 on it 3rd period. I decided to make a program on the Senior Play for Cl. Practice 4th. I read the 1st part of the Senior Play 4th then. I had play rehearsal after school until about a quarter after five. I got out a little earlier today then usual. Dorothy Gremaux came home with Dorothy for supper. Dot goes back tomorrow. Jackie and I went to the State this evening and saw Comin' in on a Wing and a Prayer and Mr. Muggs something or other. I went to sleep during that Muggs picture. We had a lot of fun with Dick Lee and another Dick. However we came home by ourselves. I got home about 11. Pretty good for me, isn't it?
February 10, 1945 (Sat)
My Saturdays always seem to start out the same way. I woke up at 8, and this morning I cleaned the bedrooms, and living room. This afternoon I washed dishes, cleaned the bathroom, and washed some silk hose out. Margaret came over and did a washing this afternoon. Jackie called me this morning, and I went down there for a few minutes this afternoon. Mother and Dad went away this evening and Dorothy went to the Inca Dance so I was home all by myself. I worked on my program for quite awhile and then finally decided to go to bed at 9:30. I really am getting good. Going to bed on Saturday night at 9:30. I bet there isn't very many people who did that tonight. Dwight is 20 years old today.
February 11, 1945 (Sun)
Mother got me up at 8:30. Eleven hours sleep last night. I studied my Shorthand this morning and then Dot and I finally got up the energy to do dishes. Mother and Dad went away with Roy and Alma so Dot and I were home by ourselves for dinner. This afternoon Jackie and I went over to North Side for play rehearsal. We got there at 2:30 and it lasted till 7. We have a baby buggy which Miss Suter wants to use in the Senior Play so she brought Jackie and I home. She thought we had such a cute bungalow, and she was telling Jackie and I what grand girls we were and how she thought we would probably be in the Senior Play next year. I hope she is right.
February 12, 1945 (Mon)
I didn't feel any too good this morning so went down to Jackie's, Mrs. Zimmerman gave me some hot peppermint. I felt pretty good after that. Until I found out we were going to have a test in Shorthand tomorrow. We had a short test in Clerical Practice. This afternoon then we had a test in Civics, I made 88 on that. We had Critic Rehearsal after school. There were quite a few teachers there and then they criticized the play. Jackie and I didn't get home till about 7. Then I ate supper and worked on my Senior Play program for Cl. Practice till 10:30. Then after that I studied my Shorthand. It was after 11 before I got to bed.
February 13, 1945 (Tues)
Well, we had our test in Shorthand this morning. It was kind of hard. We had the beginning of a 100 names test for filing in Cl. Practice 3rd. That is very hard. 4th period in Clerical Practice. Betty and I started learning how to work a calculator. Its more fun. Oddra and Pat have been eating lunch with us everyday these last week or two. We had a test in Civics this afternoon. (More tests) I made 90 on that. After school we had a line rehearsal and then skit rehearsal. I got home about 7. After that I ate my supper (Gosh I was hungry), wrote a letter to Dwight, studied my Shorthand, took a shower and went to bed about a quarter of 11.
February 14, 1945 (Wed)
Happy Valentine Days! I made 90 on my Shorthand test. We gave the skit for the Senior Play this morning right after homeroom so I didn't have to go to homeroom. Jackie, Dot Reasoner, and I were introduced as Student Directors. (We were promoted, I guess) and we had to go out on the stage. The skit went over wonderful so the play should be a huge success Saturday night. We finished our test in Cl. Practice today. We had another test in Civics. I made 100 on it. I worked in the library after school tonight. I saw Eugene right after that and he said Al finally got his car yesterday but still----- This evening after I had studied my Shorthand, Jackie called so I took a Senior Play ticket down there and talked to her and Eugene for awhile. Was in bed by 10.
February 15, 1945 (Thurs)
Not very much happened today in shool. We started our 2nd big test in Clerical Practice. We did the indexing. We had a Typing test 4th and I had 5 errors so I had 45 wpm, and 91% accuracy. We had an assembly this afternoon between 6th and 7th. Some man talked on James Whitcomb Riley and then gave some of his poems. It was really good. I worked in the library after school for Mildred Hattendorf. It was desk work. Then I had to go to play rehearsal. The kids are beginning to get a little nervous now. After all Saturday night is the night. I got out of there about a quarter after six. Good-night.
February 16, 1945 (Fri)
We have another big test in Shorthand Monday. We have more tests in there. Pat Smith and I had a lot of fun adding on the calculators in Clerical Practice 4th. I made 90 on my Clerical Practice test. We didn't work on our test anymore today. I only made 3 errors on my test in Typing 6th. Jackie and I stayed after school and worked on the props till 5:30. Then we had to be back at school at 7. We were there until 11. I got a letter from Dwight dated January 22. He hasn't been sent to the front yet. He was in Paris for seven days. He sent me a picture that was taken there of himself. Not too good.
February 17, 1945 (Sat)
Margaret called at 8:30 and I was still sound asleep. Jackie and I left at 9:30 since we had to be at school at 10. We rehearsed spots till 1:30. Gene Dennis and Dave Maish were going to take Jackie and I home, but we had to stay and get the props ready. We finally got out of there at 3. I came home, ate supper, did dishes and got cleaned up and was back at school at 7:30. Everybody was so nervous. The play started at 8:30 and was a huge success. The auditorium was packed. The play was over with about 11. Then Jackie, I , Miss Suter and the stage crew boys worked till 1. Four of theboys, Ted Carroll, Don Scott, David Hughes and Pete Bowman brought Jackie and I home. I got home about a quarter after 1. I was awfully tired but had a wonderful time.
February 18, 1945 (Sun)
I got up about 9. Didn't put my hair up last night so I did that this morning. Howard, Ahleen, and the girls were over for awhile this morning. First time I've seen them for a long time. Kay is going to kindergarten now. About 1, Dot decides she and I are going to the show so we hurried and left about a quarter after two. We went to the Paramount and saw "Meet Me in St. Louis." It was really good. We got home about 6:30 and then I went over to Bruicks about a quarter of seven to take care of Dickie and Sandy. I was there till about a quarter of 11 and I slept most of the time after I put the kids to bed at 8 except when I studied my Shorthand for a little while.
The children Grandma Betty babysits for. On the left: Ruthie, Kay, and Georgia. On the right: Kay, Georgia, Ruth, David, and Marjorie.
February 19, 1945 (Mon)
I had another test in Shorthand today. Took an ear test 2nd period. We finished our tests up in Cl. Practice. Oddra and I are making a graph on the board to record all the grades on the typing tests 4th. I had 5 errors in my typing 5th. We have a big test over the Constitution in civics tomorrow. Test, test and more tests. Thats all I seem to have. Pete and Ted came up to our lockers at noon. Miss Suter gave Jackie and I the most points for the Senior Play even more than the kids in it. Well, we did work hard. Dot baked some cookies this evening. I went over and stayed with Marjorie and David for a little while. Studied my Shorthand and wrote a letter to Dwight over there.
February 20, 1945 (Tues)
I make 90 on my test in Shorthand. 2nd period I worked at the desk in library. 3rd period I got the Sectional tickets ready to sent to the homerooms tomorrow for Mr. Reeves. I made 95 on my filing test. Oddra and I finished the graph 4th. We had the beginning of our Civics test today. I came right home from school this evening, and did my Clerical Practice. Jackie was initiated in Jobs Daughters this evening so I went. So did Jackie's mother, and a couple other ladies. Betty, Irene and Mary (of course, since she is the Junior Princess) were there. Jackie was so nervous she cried after it was over with. We got home about eleven. It rained all day.
February 21, 1945 (Wed)
We got our Sectional tickets in homeroom. I was one of the lucky ones. Everybody has been trying to buy it from me. We had our pictures taken in Phys. Fitness this morning 2nd. I started my Typing tests again in Cl. Practice 4th. I made 42 wpm - 92% accuracy. I had another test in Typing 6th and made 46.7 wpm - 96% accuracy on that. We finished our tests in Civics, and I made 90. After school Betty, Janet, Nancy and I went to 222 and joined Pan-American club. We all got notes in homeroom asking us to join. We had our pictures taken in there too. We were going out for a chicken dinner this evening, but the weather was so awful we didn't go. I washed my hair and also sweaters, blouses and head scarves.
February 22, 1945 (Thurs)
We had a Lincoln-Washington Memorial assembly today right after homeroom so our Shorthand period was shortened a great deal. I had 3 typing tests Cl. Practice 4th. On all 3 I had 52 gross words, but only on one I made 46 wpm. and 88% accuracy. Then I had another typing test 6th period. We had an hour pep session this afternoon for the tournament which starts tonight. Jackie and I hurried home then and left at 5:30 for the games. Dot and Bud Gremaux's cousin was sitting next to us. Central beat Woodburn 59-25, Central Catholic was beaten by New Haven 40-28, South Side beat Harlan 39-21. None of the games were very good. They were all slow and one-sided, but we still had a lot of fun. Gene and Doug brought us home.
February 23, 1945 (Fri)
We left at a quarter of 8 this morning. The games started at nine. I met Joe Gremaux. Gosh, is he cute! Pat Smith came to the games and she and three boys sat with Jackie and I. Les beat Huntertown 32 - 31, Elmhurst beat Laf. Central 31 - 28, and North Side beat Arcola 39 - 18. Jackie and I dashed home again and were back at 11:30. Nyda, Ilene (a couple of C.C. girls) and Pat were with us. Concordia beat Monroeville 37 -25, Hoagland beat Coesse 45 - 35, and Central beat New Haven 53 - 23. Gosh, but we have good times at the games. Jackie and I hurried home and left at 5:30 again. Nyda, Ilene, her boyfriend, Barb Willis, Pat, Oddra were with us. I saw Al there and I have never had such a cool reception in my life. S.S. beat Leo 32 - 31, N.S. beat Emhurst 39 - 33 and Concordia beat Hoagland 52 - 35. Gene and Doug brought us home tonight again.
Les is Leesburg.
February 24, 1945 (Sat)
This morning, I got up at 6:30 and cleaned the bedrooms and living room. We left at noon and had fairly good seats. Jim Smith, Nyda, Ilene, Pat were there too with us. We really saw two good games this afternoon. South Side beat Central 34 - 31 and North Side beat Concordia, 40 - 38. Concordia was 5 points ahead of us 2 minutes before the game was over with, but N.S. tied the game and won it just 30 seconds before game ended. Gosh, but we were happy. This evening we left at 6:30. Jim, Nyda, Shirley, Pat, Oddra, and another girl were with us. Boy was that a wonderful game. N.S. beat S.S. 30 - 28. S. S. was ahead of us at the half 20 - 15. Jackie and Jim went to the Demolay Dance after game and Pat, Oddra, the other girl and I went downtown. Practically all the kids went downtown and had a merry time. I was home at 10:30 though. I'm practically a nervous wreck now.
February 25, 1945 (Sun)
Mother woke Dot and I up at 8. Aunt Elma and Uncle Mac and Don came in for dinner today. Gosh, I was just so worn out that about one o'clock I went in our bedroom and went sound asleep. I didn't wake up till four. I still felt tired then, and my throat is sore and I'm hoarse. Jim and Millie came over for awhile this afternoon. Margaret and Jess brought us some hot dogs from Coney Island this evening. I just love those hot dogs. Then I studied my Shorthand, and wrote a letter to Dwight and one to Seventeen about Betty's subscription which I got her for Christmas. I'm reading "Wuthering Heights" now. Its good.
"Coney Island" didn't refer to the actual island but a hot dog shop in Fort Wayne that had wonderful Coney Island hot dogs. I had forgotten all about those but do remember how good they were. There was a small hamburger shop called Powers that had the best hamburgers in town. I think they were on the order of the White Castle one. said by Georgia Hudson.
February 26, 1945 (Mon)
We had a pep session in the gym the first thing this morning to honor our basketball team. I had a Shorthand test 1st period. Then I had 3 Typing tests 4th period, and another one 6th. Jackie and I went downtown right after school and I got a new pair of brown and white saddle oxfords. Pretty neat! When I got home there was a package here from Dwight. It contained 30 pictures taken in France and some French and English coins. Dwight mailed the package January 29th. This evening I studied for a test in Civics over the capital of 47 countries. I also studied my Shorthand for tomorrow and wrote a letter to Dwight. I also got a card from Bud Gremaux today. He's in Florida now.
February 27, 1945 (Tues)
We signed up for our Regional tickets in homeroom. I got my test back in Shorthand. I made 95 on it. I had 3 more typing tests today in Cl. Practice 4th. I only had 2 errors on one. Mr. Sinks made us stay after school because we talked too much in Civics. I received three (yes, I said 3) letters from Dwight today dated Jan. 24, 27 and 30th. He said that he finally got the other Xmas box I sent and the identification bracelet. He seemed to like it a great deal. He is still working in the RX. Gosh, but I think he's wonderful. He says such nice things. This evening I did my Cl. Practice and Shorthand, washed my red sweater, and did a little ironing. I also wrote a letter to Dwight and read part of Wuthering Heights.
I think Betty probably meant Dwight was working at the PX, not RX. As we military families know, that is the Post Exchange (Air Force is BX for Base Exchange.) said by Georgia Hudson.
February 28, 1945 (Wed)
Jackie and I worked in the library during homeroom this morning. 2nd period I got out of Phys. Fit by going to the auditorium to listen to the Junior Town Meeting. I had 3 more Typing tests in CP 4th and then another one 6th. At 2:00 we went to see "How Green Was My Valley". The camera club was giving it in the auditorium. At 3:15 I went and worked in the library for about 15 minutes and then went back and saw the rest of the movie. We went over to Margaret and Jess' this evening for supper. I received a letter from Betty Morris (the English girl) today. Her letter was dated Feb. 11th. Most of the evening I spent reading "Wuthering Heights" Its a very good book.
No February 29, 1945
No February 29th this year. Leap year was last. All my chances are gone. But all kidding aside this has started out to be a good year, and I certainly hope it continues that way. Maybe this year will see the war at an end and my Dwight and Dottie's Bob home again. It has been 2 years and 7 months since we've seen Bob and 1 year and 4 months since I've seen Dwight. Dear Diary, I hope they both come back safely and soon. Dwight is terribly, terribly homesick. After all he was just a kid of 18 when he left. Bob has been in the African, Sicilian, Italian campaigns and now in France and Germany. He deserves to come home by now.
