Here it is June and it still isn't anywhere near warm. More dictation in Shorthand and still at 60 wpm. Today was Senior Day and we had a Senior Day Assembly right after 2nd. The valedictorian, salutatorian and Flo Ann BOM gave speeches, the class poem was read, class will was read and some music and then they gave a large beautiful oil painting of Mr. Northrop to the school. Then they planted the ivy. At noon Pat, Oddra, Jackie and I gave Gloria a white blouse for graduation. The program this morning lasted for a couple hours. It just poured down this evening and in some places in town it hailed. The hailstones were as large as golf balls. I received a thank-you card from Lucile today. I washed my hair this evening.
June 2, 1945 (Sat)
I woke up about a quarter of 8. built a fire in the backroom so we would have hot water. This morning I mopped and waxed the kitchen and bathroom floors and straightened the bedrooms up. About noon I got sick and the doctor came out about a quarter after 1. Naturally I felt much better after he left. I wrote letters to Dwight, Lucile and a letter to a store which advertised a dress in Seventeen which I want. Also after reading Seventeen I've decided I want to go to college - University of Illinios. I don't know whether I can or not though. I called Mrs. Bridges to see if she had heard from Dwight and Bernard answered. I didn't even know he was home. Mrs. Bridges has heard from Dwight. I wonder why he hasn't written to me. I took care of Midge and Dave this evening from 7:30 till 2. Made $2.00.
June 3, 1945 (Sun)
I didn't get up till a quarter of ten. Dot had started both fires and had dinner in the oven. Mother and Dad went to Big Long Lake with Jim and Millie. They came back about 11:30 this morning. Jim and Millie stayed for dinner. Dorothy left for the show and bowling about 1. I called Jackie on the telephone and I guess she had a pretty good time at the Commencement Dance last night. Mother and I washed the dishes this afternoon and then I typed my 88 questions (the answers to them) for Civics. Don and Donny came over for a little while. Then I wrote a letter to Pauline and one to Dwight. Mother and Dad went over to Roy and Alma's this afternoon for awhile. I also put some more pictures in my photograph album. I talked to Betty Greenwood quite awhile this afternoon.

Jackie and I worked in the library this morning during homeroom.. In Physical Fitness today we played volleyball and believe it or not, I enjoyed it. We took a filing test in Cl. Practice today and I made 90 on it. I took two typing tests 4th. Gloria came back to school 5th so she could eat with us. Today was our last day for all of us together in the cafeteria. Jackie won't be back next year. Gloria's graduating. We took a 20 minute typing test. I did terrible on it. We handed in our answers in Civics 7th. Betty and I were 8 minutes early to work. We missed our bus and so Walter Ostermeyer (the new Ditto boy) took us downtown. I got some stamps at Howard's and a graduation card and beautiful box of stationary for Helen Soles. Dot got a letter from Bob. He has 94 points, but will be a while before he gets home.
Points were awarded for months of service, purple heart, etc. Reservests were discharged first. In those days enlistees signed up for the duration of hostilities plus 6 months. Marge Daniels said that Danny had more points than most but because he signed up before the war started, he had to wait longer to get out. Submitted by Buddy Buckley
Flight crews had only to aquire 25 missions on bombers and then they were sent back to the states.... Submitted by Paul Dorey

It was a nice day today. We finished our Shorthand up today. No more of that till next semester. Hurrah! I went to Studyhall second period and wrote a letter to Dwight and drew a picture. First time I've been to Studyhall for a long time. 3rd period Mrs. Chapman told us what she was going to give us on our grade cards (me B+). Several of us weren't satisfied so she said we should take another test. School was left out at 12 since commencement is this afternoon at 2:30. Jackie worked for Miss Zook while I took the test. We didn't get out of there till after 2. I got home at 10 of 3 and had to leave at 3 for work. Betty and I gave Helen her presents at work and she really likes them. Ray and LaVon came over this evening. Still no mail from Dwight.
June 6, 1945 (Wed)
We finally got our Legends in homeroom this morning, but didn't have much time to have very many kids sign it. Well, today was the last day of school for this school year. On my grade card I received Shorthand A-, Phys. Fitness - Credit, Cl. Practice1 - A-, Cl. Practice1A - A, Typing A-, and Civics A-. I took some pictures of the gang on the front steps right after we got out of school - about 11. Then Betty, Jackie, Oddra and I met Lucile downtown and went and got something to eat. Oddra left and the rest of us met Gloria and went to see the movie "Practically Yours." It was very, very good. Betty and I went to work then. Got to work 9 minutes early. Dot and Mother cleaned the wallpaper in the living room this evening. I made 93 on the test I took in Cl. Practice yesterday.
Legends was (probably still is) the name of the yearbook for North Side, in case someone was wondering.
June 7, 1945 (Thurs)
I got up about a quarter after 8. I built a fire in the utility room and then made the beds and straightened Dot and my bedroom up a bit. I washed the windows then after that I mowed part of the lawn. This afternoon I baked chocolate chip cookies and washed the dishes. I took a bath and got ready to go to work then. I got to work a little before four. I drew $11.51 today. We missed our bus at 8 so I didn't get home till 9. I washed my hair after I got home. Dad received a telegram from Dr. Garceau and he is supposed to go to St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis on Saturday. Dad will be gone week and they will give him penicillin shots. Dot stayed over to Howard and Ahleen's all night.
June 8, 1945 (Fri)
Got up about 8. I wrote a letter to Pauline telling her I would be home Sunday. I finished mowing the grass in the front yard. Boy, what a job! I had blisters on my hands and my arms and back were so tired. I ironed my slack suit up this morning so I could wear it this afternoon. After dinner I did the dishes. I left for work about 3. This morning I went to North Side and got Pauline's Legend. The SPC picnic was this afternoon, but none of the other kids went so I didn't either. I got to work just a few minutes before four. Its been three weeks now since I've heard from Dwight. Mother and Dad went away this evening and Dot and I just teased each other.
June 9, 1945 (Sat)
Mother and Dad got me up at 7 this morning. Before they left I washed all the car windows. They left for Indianapolis around 9. Aunt Elma went too. I scrubbed the kitchen and bathroom floors then and baked a cake. I received a letter from Bud Gremaux today and he is coming home again. In fact he should be home tomorrow. He said he would try his utmost to come out to see me. This afternoon I straightened the bedrooms up. I got to work a little before 4. Tonight was my last night on nights. Mother and Aunt Elma picked me up at the end of the bus lines. We came home, ate some ice cream and then took Aunt Elma home. Dot came home from the show soon after we came home. I went to bed about 11.
Aunt Elma was Grandpa Frank's sister. There were just the two of them. I do not remember who was the elder of the two. Submitted by Sandy Buckley
June 10, 1945 (Sun)
Mother and Dot woke me up about 8. It was a very warm day although it did rain some. This morning Mother washed the woodwork and put the curtains back up. The house looks livable once again. This was the day we were supposed to go down to Christman's for dinner. Pauline came over this afternoon, but I wasn't home. Dot gave her her Legend and Civics book and took her picture. I went to a party at Helen Soles house this afternoon. All of the kids who worked on the 4 - 8 shift at the Harvester were there and then a few besides. We had a good time. I met Mother and Dot about a quarter of six at the Rialto and saw "I Love a Soldier" and "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine." The 1st one was good, but didn't care too much about the other I left my letter from Bud out to work last night, but Ervin found it. Its 10:30 now. Night!
June 11, 1945 (Mon)
Oh gosh, I got up at 5:30 this morning. I think I was still half asleep when I got to work which was at 6:45. I went to work with Mother, Dot and Bill Stolte. They all have to be at work at 7. I wrote a letter to Dwight before 7:30. Then I started working. Alice Keesua (?), supervisor of girls, and I checked my issues I had typed. At noon I ate with Mother. This afternoon I finished checking and then typed till 4. I got home about 5. Mother, Dot and I went downtown this evening. I bought myself lipstick, cake make-up, anklets, dickie, and a pattern and material (blue flowered chintz-pretty) for another dress. So now I'll be sewing again. Dot went over to some girls house this evening so Mother and I stopped and had an ice cream soda on the way home from town. Its just a little after 10. It rained hard today.
June 12, 1945 (Tues)
This getting up at 5:30, I think, is going to get me down. I got to work at a quarter of 7. I took the morning paper and read that till Helen Soles and Izzie Reich came in. Then I talked to them. I typed most of the day. About 1 1/2 Marjorie, Bill and I checked. Marge got to sit next to me today. We got quite a bit of talking done. I ate lunch with Mom and then we walked around the Harvester a bit. The days go pretty fast. We got three cards from Dad today. He says he'll probably come home Thursday. That's sooner than we thought he would. I called Betty Greenwood last night. She had her tonsils taken out and her throat was pretty sore. I just talked to her mother. I cut my dress out this evening.
June 13, 1945 (Wed)
This morning I got to work at a quarter of 7 and I had forgotten my badge, billfold and pass. I had to go over to the Employment office and get a temporary badge. I rang in at 7:56. I went up to the office then and wrote Dwight a letter. The girl that sits next to me, Phyllis Hite, seems very nice. She's 18 and just graduated this year from some small school. I typed for a little while. She and I and then Marge checked. I ate dinner with Mother again. I went over to Howard and Ahleen's right from work. Mother and Dot came over too and we ate supper over there then. After we came home I sewed on my dress. I called Jackie this evening. Lucile is working with her at Wolf and Dessauer. I washed my hair this evening and did a little ironing.
June 14, 1945 (Thurs)
I didn't get up this morning till 6:30. Mother and I left at 8 to go to Indianapolis after Dad. We stopped in Noblesville for dinner and got to St. Vincent's Hospital at 12:30. We didn't leave Indianapolis till 3 though. It rained on the way home, but was very nice going down. Dad drove home and was pretty tired when we got into town about 7. We stopped and got some sandwiches before we came home. I received a card from Betty G. and a letter from Pauline. Betty had called me so I called her. She is feeling pretty good except for her throat hurting. Roy and Alma came over. I took care of Dave and Marge while Margaret and Jess went to the drug store. Dot got a letter from Bob and he said he would be home in two months - maybe sooner.
June 15, 1945 (Fri)
I'm reading the book "Life with Father" now so I read that after I got to work before 7:30. I typed most of the day, and checked a little. Marjorie, Bill, Phyllis Hite and I are sort of running around together at work now. Mary Jane Walker typed next to me today. She's as cute as Christmas and twice as funny. She's 21 and married to a sailor. At noon Mother and I got in the cigarette line for Dad and we each got him two packages. This evening Jackie and her grandmother came down for a little while. Jim McCrea came over too. I sewed on my dress most of the evening. It rained again today. It just rains all the time. I'm beginning to wonder if it will ever stop. Still if it does it will probably get awfully warm. I drew $12.47 today.
June 16, 1945 (Sat)
Its still raining. I read some more of Life with Father. Its good. I typed and checked today again. I have a desk of my own now. Mary Jane sat beside me again. I ate lunch with Mother, two other ladies and a boy today. We had a good time. Marjorie wan't in to work today. I get home around 5 now. Dorothy went down to Christmans this weekend. Millie and Jim were over and also Alma and Ray. Mother and Dad went away this evening so I sewed on my dress. I got quite a bit done on it. Then old Cliff Clouse and his wife came down. I didn't even ask them to sit down so they soon left. Gosh, how I despite them. I went to bed pretty early. Nothing much to do - - - - I went to bed about 10.
June 17, 1945 (Sun)
Today's Father's Day. I got up about 8. It rained most of the day today too. I sewed on my dress most of the day. It really looks nice. I have it all finished except for the buttons, half of the buttonholes, hems and belt. I put some lace on it which Aunt Dessie sent some time ago - - I'm pretty proud of it. Mother and Dad went away this evening. I sewed and listened to the radio. Some pretty good programs are on on Sunday afternoons and evenings. Dot came home pretty early today. Ray and LaVon came over this evening, but didn't stay long since Mother and Dad weren't here. Fishing season opened today - - Howard, Ahleen, Marg and Jess and quite a few other people went to the lake. What a nice rainy day for it. Well, it's about 10 now
June 18, 1945 (Mon)
Dad didn't go to work today and neirther did Mother. This afternoon they went fishing. So this morning I wrote a letter to Pauline. A pretty long one too before 7:30. I typed practically all day - only checked a little with Ginger Redman (Texan gal). I ate lunch with Phyllis Hite and a bunch of her girlfriends today. Betty G. came back to work. She's working from 12 to 8. It seemed good to see her. She talks as much as ever despite the fact that her throat is still sore. I met Dot downtown after work and we shopped around till 7:30. We got some cute patterns for ourselves and Marjorie, Roy and Alma were here when we got home. Then Ray and Lavon - then Alma's brother and sister-in-law (by the way, my teacher in the 6th grade at Forest Park). I sewed a bit on my dress. Got to bed about 10:00. George Michael committed suicide today right back of Margarets.
June 19, 1945 (Tues)
Mother went to work today. I wrote a letter to Dwight this morning. I like to write letters then - nobody to bother me. Phyllis and I checked most of the day. Marjorie hasn't been to work since last Friday. I guess she is in Chicago. I ate lunch with Mother and the same people we ate with last Sat. I guess I'm going to the lake with Greenwood's some Sunday. I hope so. I came straight home from work tonight and started working on my dress. Ray and Lavon were over again this evening. I hurried like everything to get my areas finished so I could wear it tomorrow. No particular reason why I want to wear it. I just do. Mother put part of the hem in for me. I finally finshed it at a quarter after 10. We've been having nice weather these last couple of days.
Betty worked at International Harvester (along with Grandpa Frank, my dad Howard, and Grandma Hazel). It was a big manufacturer of large trucks and at one time of the Scout which was a Jeep-like vehicle. It is now known as Navastar or Navstar, I can't remember which. So, I think the checking she was referring to was the typing she and others had been doing.Submitted by Georgia
June 20, 1945 (Wed)
I was too sleepy to write any letters this morning - - I just sat around and talked. Dad went back to work today. Everybody seemed glad to see him. I typed practically all day. At noon I ate lunch with Mother and Dad. I stopped downtown on my way home and got a birthday card and a box of personal notes stationery for Gloria's birthday (June 22nd). I got a letter from Dwight today dated June 2nd. He's been in the hospital - had on operation (I don't know what kind) - has 44 points and doesn't think he'll get home for a long time. Jackie came down and then I walked her home. They are going to move to Finley, Ohio and pretty soon. Heavens, but I'm going to miss her. I washed my hair and took care of Midge and Dave for awhile. It rained again this evening.
June 21, 1945 (Thurs)
It was raining again this morning. I started a letter to Dwight. I really worked hard today - I typed 157 spec cards and I've been typing only about 85. Marjorie still isn't back. I ate lunch with Mother and Dad again today. I came straight home from work today. After I got home I ate and then mowed the front lawn. I was feeling pretty tired then from that and working so hard at work. I got paid today - made $20 - drew $15.80. I just shined my shoes and pressed my white skirt and brown and white striped t-shirt. Jackie called and she and I and Lucile are going to the show Saturday evening. Pat and Oddra may go along if I can get a hold of them - I haven't been able to yet. Its 9:30 - I'm going to bed early tonight.
June 22, 1945 (Fri)
This morning I just talked to some of the girls till 7:30. I checked most of the day with Kathleen Dwiley. It was sort of tiresome to check all day. At noon, of course, I went down and ate with Mother and Dad. There is some boy who works near Dad who's been asking Dad about me. He's cute, seventeen, and name is Jimmy. I met Dot downtown after work and we shopped around till a quarter of six. I got the pictures from Howards I took on the last day of school and took my locket down to Gochers (won't get it for 4 weeks.) Lucile gave Jackie to give me a wedding picture of her and Bill. I really is wonderful. I just love it! I talked to Jackie twice on the telephone and went down to see her. I also talked to Oddra and Pat. Roy and Alma were over. Dot and I were playing golf out in the front yard - just practicing. Its 10:00 now. Night.
June 23, 1945 (Sat)
I wrote a letter to Dwight this morning. It was a nice day, but oh - so very warm this afternoon. I checked practically all day today again. Ate lunch with Mom and Dad as usual. I hurried home from work so I could get ready to go the the show. Jackie and I left here at 6:30 and met Lucile and Oddra at Wolf and Dessauer. We went to the Emboyd to see Alan Ladd in "Sally O'Rourke" so naturally it was good. Afterwards we went to Hobby House. I saw Marceil Derickson downtown. First time I've seen her in a long time. I got home about 11 and in bed about 12. Jackie and I stood out in front of her house from 10:30 to 11. Dot stayed over to Wanda's house tonight.
June 24, 1945 (Sun)
Mother and Dad went to the lake at 4 this morning. I woke up at 7:30 and I'll be darned if I could go back to sleep. Georgia stayed over to Margaret and Jess's all night so she was over here most of the morning. We ate dinner over to Margaret's. Ahleen brought some clean clothes for Georgia and I took her to the show with me. I met Dorothy, Wanda and Betty Greenwood at the Civic Theater. We saw the play "Kiss and Tell". It was very good. We went to Carroll's Drugstore and had a sundae. Georgia came back home with me and we stopped at Tuttles Drugstore and got popsicles. Mom and Dad were home when I got home. Jim and Millie came over and Mr. and Mrs. Smith too.
June 25, 1945 (Mon)
This morning I read part of "Life With Father". I checked till 10:30 with Phyllis. Marjorie Bill came back to work last Sat. At noon Mother, Dad and I walked down to the Union Hall where they paid their dues. For supper we had the fish Mother and Dad caught yesterday. I got a letter from Dwight today dated May 18th. He sent a picture of their PX and a postcard picture of the parade they had on V-E Day. This evening Mother, Dad, Dot and I went downtown. Dot and I saw Marjorie and Aunt Blanche. It probably won't be very long before Marjorie gets married. I bought a beautiful white purse and a cute pair of shortie pajamas. We had watermelon after we got home. It was really good - the first we've had this year.
June 26, 1945 (Tues)
I started a letter to Dwight this morning. I typed most of the day except for a couple hours when I checked my work with our supervisor, Alice Kessens. They had cigarettes at the canteen today so Dad, Mother and I got in line and got Dad 6 packages. I went over to Howard and Ahleen's from work. Ahleen wanted to go to an Eastern Star meeting so I took care of the girls for her. Howard was there, but asleep because he goes to work at 11 or somewhere around there. I read to the girls and told them stories. I put them to bed about 9 and went to bed about 10 myself. Betty is going with Ervin now. I left my coat at work. Good memory, I've got huh!
June 27, 1945 (Wed)
I finished my letter to Dwight this morning. I typed all day and my back was a little tired. My darn typewriter is broken. The typewriter man tried to fix it but couldn't - in fact he made it worse. I came straight home from work tonight and didn't forget my coat. Georgia and Kay got up and walked part way down to Maumee with me. Ahleen really packed me a big lunch - sandwich piece of chicken, apple, 3 apricots and 2 plums - but it tasted good. I received a Seventeen today. There are a lot of cute clothes in it. This evening Mother and I started cutting the grass in the backyard. Boy, that's hard work. I washed my hair this evening and took a shower. I've been having a toothache lately and my appointment is still a couple of weeks off.
June 28, 1945 (Thurs)
I took my Seventeen to work and read it before 7:30. My typewriter is on the bum so I used different typewriters today. I'm supposed to get a different one tomorrow though. I got paid today - drew $19.84 - made $26. That was my first full payday. So after work I went downtown and bought myself a new white dress. It has cap sleeves, red and white braided belt and red and white buttons. Very pretty, I think. I made an appointment at Wolf and D's to have my hair cut in a feather bob next Friday (7th). I also got a short pattern for Dot. I got a thank you note from Gloria today. One of the girls from the Inca (Rosie Koda) was here for supper. Jim and Millie and Roy and Alma all came over this evening. Its 10:15 now so night. Dwight has been in the Army 2 years today.
June 29, 1945 (Fri)
I wrote a letter to Dwight this morning. It was a very hot day. Kathleen Dailey and I checked most of the day. The typewriter man came after my typewriter and brought me another one. This one rattles a great deal but types pretty good. After work I met Dorothy downtown, took some negatives down to Howards Camera Shop. We shopped around for some things for Dot till a quarter of six. After we got home I shortened my white dress. Jackie called while I was gone and then called again after I was home. She wanted me to go to the show with her, Lucile and Gloria Saturday evening. I went ot bed 10:30 this evening.
June 30, 1945 (Sat)
I took the book "Life with Father" to work with me today. Kathleen and I checked together practically all day again. It wasn't too warm in the office today. It rained quite a bit. Mother, Dad and I sat out on the dock at noon and watched it rain. My hair was straight so I hurried home from work and put it up. I hurried and took my shower etc. and left at 6:30 when Jackie came down. We met Lucile downtown at Wolf and D's. - Gloria couldn't come - about 7. We went to the Paramount and saw "Without Love" which was good. We went out to Georgie Porgie Dog House on Washington and had some hot dogs. We got home about 11 and got to bed around 11:30.
