Ignorant - 2/26/2002

I bet I make you feel ignorant,
I bet I do a real good job.
I stand here using my words,
Knowing that all who hear
Can understand me.
Except for you.
I see your face
When you struggle to grasp
The words that are closer to me
Than second nature.
I stand here before you,
And I can see,
See the look in your eyes,
And I know,
Know exactly what you feel.
I hear the others standing there,
Behind your back they glare
And laugh at your ignorance.
But everyday I realize
Just a little bit more
That we are the ignorant ones.
Why else would we laugh
When a stranger is confused
By the slang we abuse.
We invite ourselves
To this exact situation,
Sit at the head of the table,
And may as well crown ourselves
The kings and queens
Of ignorance.
But what you don't know
Is how I feel
And the things I think.
I go out of my way to ensure
That you understand,
Maybe not now,
But maybe someday down the road.
And still I feel like you.
I bet I make you feel ignorant,
I bet I do a real good job,
But you know what?
So do you.
