  6th Grade Band Curriculum Map
August Fundamentals of breathing, tone production, rhythm reading and posture.  These skills carry on forever.  Tune Sheets.
September Basis for note reading is developed.  Essential Elements books are used.  Square contest begins.
October Students become more proficient at note reading, with note/fingering coordination being stressed.  Essential Elements books are used
November Students receive sheet music and begin preparing for the Winter Concert. Conducting unit begins.  Essential Elements books are used
December Preparation for Winter Concert.  After School rehearsal on 11/30.  Essential Elements books are used.
January Students are assigned to duets.  Essential Elements books are used, as well as sheet music.  Square Contest.
February Scales are learned, in preparation for the Mardi Gras Scale Contest.  Square Contest.
March Preparation for Chamber Music Night (duets).  Sheet music distributed for Spring Concert and Elementary Visits.  Square Contest.
April Preparation for Spring Concert and Elementary Visits.  Square Contest.  Essential Elements book and sheet music used in class.
May Elementary Visits, Spring Concert and possible Six Flags performance.  Square Contest ends and Champions are determined.
   
  Book used:  "Essential Elements, Book 1".
  Students are given a copy of the book and CD/DVD.  If the wish to purchase, the cost is $7.95.  Otherwise, the book and CD?DVD must be turned in at the end of the school year.

August Daily routine is established:  Rhythm Packets, Warm ups, Scales (Contest), Sightreading, and rehearsal of Audition Packets. 
September Audtions begin.  Scale Contest.  MHS BBQ Performance.  After School Rehearsals begin the week of September 19th.  Sightreading.
October Preparation for All Suburban Band Auditions.  Mock Auditions.  Conducting unit.  Begin rehearsing music for Winter Concert.
November Holiday Packet, Winter Concert Music.  Marching fundamentals for: optional Thanksgiving Day Parade performance.
December Preparation for Winter Concert, Holiday performances throughout the community, Final Exam: Playing Test
January Solos and Ensembles assigned. 
February chamber music rehearsals, piece prepartion.
March Chamber Music Night, Solo and Ensemble Festival, All District Instrumental, Festival Preparation.
April Festival Preparation for Symphonic, Six Flags Preparation for Concert. MHS BBQ.  Begin preparing music for Elementary trips and Spring Concert.
May Festival for Symphonic, Spring Concert.
   
  ***Please note:  Daily Routine continues throughout the school year.  Strong fundamental playing remains our #1 priority.
  Book Used:  Standard of Excellence, Book #2.
  Students are given this book to use for the school year, to be turned in in May.  If they wish to keep it, the cost is $6.95.
