Guide to Beginner Instruments
Most students that stay with Band
throughout High School “step up” to a higher quality instrument at some
point. “Step up instruments” are really
not that much more expensive than a beginner instrument. Therefore, I recommend for parents to buy a
less expensive used beginner instrument in 6th grade and “step up”
in 7th or 8th grade once it has been established that the
child will be staying in Band. Listed
below are high quality name brands that you can find used for less than half of
what they would cost used:
Flutes: Yamaha, Gemeinhardt, Artley, Armstrong, Bundy
Clarinets: Selmer, Yamaha, Buffet, Leblanc
Saxophone: Selmer, Yamaha
Trumpet/Cornet: Yamaha, Bach Selmer, Conn
Trombone: Yamaha, Bach, Conn
Percussion Kits: Practice Pad, Bell Kit and sticks (Pearl,
Yamaha)
