Work Experience

Sep. 2006- Feb. 2007                 Emergency Medical Officer, Imam Sajjad Charity Hospital, Mashhad, Iran.

Responsibilities:

Imam Sajjad Hospital is located in a less privileged area of Mashhad, very close to the city’s main belt highway. It, therefore, receives a significant load of traumatic patients, including head trauma, motor vehicle accidents, as well as physical assaults and street fighting. A noteworthy number of unstable patients with a wide range of conditions such as asthmatic attack, chest pain, acute abdomen, seizure, etc are also referred to the hospital by the nearby practices. There, I was responsible for admitting patients to the emergency department, stabilizing them, and following up with them according to the consultants’ advice. Performing procedures such as electrocardiography, IV cannulation, and NG Tube insertion, as well as suturing and wound care, were my other responsibilities at this hospital.

Sep. 2006- Dec. 2006                 Emergency Medical Officer, Hashmeinjead Teaching Hospital, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, Iran.

Responsibilities:

Hasheminejad Hospital is a university teaching hospital located in a densely populated area of Mashhad with over 100 patients visiting to the emergency room every day. The hospital is also an important center for cardiac illnesses. Working as a medical officer in the emergency department and under the supervision of the senior medical staff, I gained more experience in the diagnosis and management of various medical emergencies particularly cardiac illnesses such as acute coronary syndromes, congestive heart failure, and various arrhythmias. During this period, I enhanced my competency in emergency practical skills such as endotracheal intubation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, external defibrillation, and cardiac monitoring. Furthermore, I got invaluable experience from daily ward rounds with registrars and attending physicians at the emergency department, as well as through consulting with surgeons, pediatricians, and gynecologists in other departments.

May. 2006- Sep. 2006                Full-time General Practitioner, Bagheollah Private Clinic, Chenaran, Iran.

Responsibilities:

Visiting a wide spectrum of outpatient presentations, ranging from common febrile illnesses, asthmatic exacerbations, hypertension, diabetics, chest pain, etc. Working in the same building where there was a public health center, I also had the opportunity to gain experience in providing antenatal care to pregnant women, giving postnatal consultation, and managing specific presentations of childhood and infancy.

Nov. 2005- May. 2006               General Practitioner, Toos Otolaryngology and Audiometry Clinic, Mashhad, Iran.

Responsibilities:

Toos otolaryngology and audiometry clinic is a center where ENT outpatients of all ages plus children suffering from various hearing and speech impairments, are visited by a medical team comprised of an ENT consultant, a general practitioner, an audiometrist, and a speech therapist. I, as the general practitioner of the team, had to visit each patient first, take a full history, perform a comprehensive physical examination, and record all the findings in patient’s files before referring them to the relevant section for further management. The common presentations in the clinic were allergic symptoms, hearing problems, ear infections, headache and facial pain, as well as infants with congenital/perinatal hearing impairments who were considered for cochlear implantation with further postoperative speech therapy.

Feb. 04- Nov. 05                        Full-time Genral Practitioner, Medical Emergency Centre,            Astan Ghods Sport Complex, Mashhad, Iran.

Responsibilities:

Astan Ghods Sports Complex is one of Iran’s largest sports complexes, which has over 33,000 members, and includes two soccer fields, two indoor swimming pools, 8 tennis courts, and over 15 multiple-purpose gyms. Because of the high incidence of sports related injuries, a medical emergency center is built inside the complex and is dedicated to managing medical emergencies that happen in the complex. Serving my national service in this center, I had the opportunity to gain a valuable experience in the emergency care of various sporting injuries. A variety of fractures and dislocations, head trauma, eye trauma, heat stroke, and one case of near drowning, which successfully responded to resuscitation, were some of the cases I encountered there, just to name a few.

Sep. 2003- Feb. 2004                 Working on a collaborative research project on “Long-term Complications of Mustard Gas Poisoning in Severely Intoxicated Iranian Veterans in The Province of Khorasan.”

Responsibilities:

My thesis was a collaborative research project on “Long-term Complications of Mustard Gas Poisoning in Severely Intoxicated Iranian Veterans in The Province of Khorasan.” This project was funded by Mashhad University of Medical Sciences with a grant of approximately $20,000 AUD and took approximately five years to complete. I served as the coordinator of the research team; and, along with nine specialist colleagues, we evaluated the respiratory, cutaneous, ophthalmologic, neuromuscular, as well as the hematological and immunological complications of sulfur mustard poisoning in severely intoxicated Iranian veterans. This research led to a number of publications in well-respected international journals with most of the initial drafts of the papers being written by me during the above-mentioned period.

Mar. 2003- Sep. 2003                Intern, Imam Reza and Ghaem Hospitals, Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Mashhad, Iran.

Responsibilities:

During my internship, I passed the following clinical rotations: Internal medicine (3 months), Pediatrics (3 months), General Surgery (2 months), Obstetrics and Gynecology (2 months), Orthopedics and Emergency Medicine (1 month), Cardiology (1 month), Psychiatry (1 month), Neurology (1 month), Infectious Diseases (1 month), Urology (1 month), E.N.T. (1 month), Ophthalmology (1 month), Dermatology (1 month), and Public Health (1 month).
