MELBOURNE METAL
-NEWS FOR JANUARY 2000-

January 31st, 2000

Just one last quick piece of news before I skip town for the next week and a half. For those who can pick up channel 31 on the idiot box, you MUST remember to tune in to CORE this Wednesday night at 10:30pm. It's the first episode for the season and it will be showing heaps of footage from last years Metal For The Brain gig in Canberra. Bands featured will include the likes of Dreadnaught, Blood Duster, Alchemist, Pod People, Cryogenic plus interviews with the bands and other Aussie metal celebs.

So if you're lucky to be in town (unlike myself.....GRRRRR!!!!!), make sure you check it out.

See ya in a couple of weeks....

Happy Y2K everyone! Although there didn't seem to be much metal action going on around town, from most reports everyone's NYE seemed to be a good one. Now that all that Y2K bug shit is outta the way, everyone can breathe a sigh of relief and get on with their lives! Here's hoping this year brings lots of joy and mad metal action. :)

Those not attending the annual Big Day Out gig at the Showgrounds this Sunday might want to get down to the Arthouse in the city on Saturday night for the "Metal Drag Night". Come down and watch your fave metal bands get down and dirty in skirts and stockings!! That's right, it's a drag theme night, so grab grandma's lippie and get ready for some cross dressing fun! Bands brave enough to play on the night include Frankenbok, W.A.R, F.M.C and Shagnum. Those punters who are also brave enough to "dress up" for the occasion will recieve cheap entry and drink cards for their effort.

Speaking of W.A.R and Frankenbok, congrats to both bands for the awesome sets they put on at Subculture's one-off metal night on the 22nd. The night was a big success with Level 3 totally dedicated to the metal with Ed from The Wolves playing the role of DJ all night along with the two bands playing jam packed live sets. Hopefully this WON'T be just a one-off thing and more of these nights will continue into the future.

Still on the subject of Frankenbok, it looks like the release of their debut album, "Greetings And Salutations" has been pushed back to February 28th, which is a Monday. So start hassling the fuck outta your record stores for it now. Or alternatively, you can pick it up at their shows.

I think W.A.R also have a vinyl release which is available at their shows for a measly $5. Again, get along and see them live and you'll be able to score a copy.

Superheist also have a new release out, ANOTHER FUCKING EP!!!! Hehehehe.... Check it out though cause it contains 8 tracks and runs for about 35 minutes. For $10 that's not too bad. It's called "8 Miles High" and it's in the shops now. The band will be playing live in a couple of weeks in Sydney and Melbourne so check your local street press for more details.

Don't forget, if you are attending the BDO show on Sunday be sure to get on over to the Essential Stage at 1pm to catch The Wolves play. The boys are currently working hard on their debut album which will be released soon on Dark Carnival records. So hard in fact, that singer/guitarist Jason has done damage to his elbow! Well, not exactly....he injured it in a minor skateboarding accident while taking a break from recording. The true metal trooper that he is, Jas has vowed to soldier on and will be going hard on Sunday and also during their set at the Slipknot gig on the 12th of February.

The Wolves will also be playing the night before the Slipknot gig at Edward's Tavern in Prahran along with Frankenbok, Dreadnaught, Bowel Mouth and Dark Journey for DJ Jeff Rule's birthday bash. I expect everyone to be at this gig, cause I unfortunately won't be!! The best fucking local bill in ages and where will I be? Sydney!!! Ugghhh!! Well, it won't be so bad, I'll be up there seeing Slipknot before heading back the next day to catch the show here.

I'll be leaving for Sydney on the 1st of February which means I'll be missing out on a few good shows down here (just my fucking luck!!) and returning on the 12th for Slipknot. If anyone needs to get in touch with me while I'm away, drop me a line at my hotmail address:

And with any luck I'll be seeing y'all again soon.... GO HARD!!!!
