Sandros Bloodworth
Sandros is a handsome fellow, and exotic in his appearance. His skin is dark in hue, as are his eyes and hair. A sharply hooked nose sits above full lips that almost always show his white teeth in a sly smile. An unusual tattooed design stretches across one cheek; it is a pattern of dots, moving from his left ear, across the sharp blade of his cheekbone, then down to his chin before reaching his mouth. This is partially covered by the well-trimmed goatee and mustache he has. His hair is long, and usually kept in a ponytail, the tip of which falls to the center of his back. His clothing is loose fitting, and he prefers brighter colors, like red and blue. He always carries his quarterstaff at hand everywhere he goes, and has a few daggers stashed here and there in case of emergencies. He also has a shortsword strapped to his back for times when a blade may be needed. Sandros is a very outgoing and likable individual. He has spent a large portion of his life as a traveling entertainer, and as such, he has a good grasp of how best to get along with people. However, he has a low tolerance for what he considers stupidity…and he won’t hesitate to drive barbs into those he feels deserve it. It is a rare time that Sandros is unhappy; he has a natural joy in his spirit that shines through in even the worst of circumstances. He is slow to anger…but once he has been pushed too far, very little will make him back down. And if there is one thing that brings out his temper, it is seeing those of female persuasion being mistreated by a man. During his time with adventuring groups, Sandros spends a lot of time trying to keep everyone in good spirits. He also likes to consider himself a bit of a middleman; anytime an argument starts, he likes to put himself in the thick of things and try to get everyone to see eye to eye. Most of all, Sandros like to enjoy himself as much as he can. But even while doing so, he never lets his guard down. You just never know when something may happen that you’ll need to be ready for when it does… Sandros was born in Squarento to a barkeep and his young wife. His father, a man named Zachary, was a good man, who had worked hard for years to make himself successful in the city. His mother, Leeli, was the daughter of a local merchant who had been impressed by Zach’s work ethics, and felt that the man would one day make something of himself. Sandros’ younger years were happy ones. His parents were loving and cared much for their son. When Sandros was three, they had a daughter as well, a girl they named Deliahs. Until Sandros was 7, the family lived a content life working in their Inn, a place where Sandros met many an interesting adventurer who passed through town. Then, disaster struck. A local nobleman found his eye drawn to the very beautiful Leeli…and he found his advances spurned by the faithful young woman. In anger, the nobleman, Gardon Velluth son of the Duke of Athring, swore that he would have her one way or another. Using his connections, Gardon slowly began to destroy any business for the Inn that Zach was running. He also sent ruffians to tear up the place every week or two as well. After about six months of this, the family found themselves in dire straits. They couldn’t pay their debts, and they were forced to see what they could to survive. However, in the end…it was not enough. Dragged into debtor’s court, they were brought before a judge that was in Gardon’s pocket. The judge sentenced the entire family to be sold into slavery, and that was that. Sandros was bought by a man who ran a traveling circus; he had met the young boy years before while staying at the Inn. Malik had recognized some natural skills that he knew could easily be cultivated, that would make Sandros a fine entertainer one day. Sandros never knew what happened to the rest of his family. It was on the auction block that his face was tattooed with the strange design…one that was supposed to show that he was a slave. For years, Sandros was so self-conscious of his markings that he was afraid to let his talent shine through. He trained as he was bid to, and learned much over the years; how to juggle, ropewalk, tumble...even sing, dance, and play the flute. But it took until he was in his teens before he actually found the strength to show his skills on stage. Partially, it was because he was able to grow facial hair by that time that covered up most of his tattoo. Almost immediately, Sandros became an integral part of the traveling show. His natural ability to draw others to watch his acts served him well, and he began to make a lot of money for his “owner” Malik. For the most part, Sandros was happy living with the circus folk. He never grew too close to any of them, however…he still felt the loss of his real family keenly, and it was difficult for him to leave himself open to that pain ever again. Even so, he got along well with everyone, and was well liked by all. Over the years, Sandros found himself remembering the stories told by adventurers as they came to the Inn…and he still held a place in his heart for such stories. He dreamed of being free to do what HE wanted. Of being able to go out into the world and become something more then just a circus performer. Malik knew this…and when Sandros reached his 21st birthday, he decided it was time to give the man his freedom. He had more then made up for any money spent on him all those years before. And Malik had never really liked having a slave in his employ anyway, so…it was time to let him go. Sandros was eternally grateful for his new found freedom, and he used part of the money Malik gave him as a gift to buy a horse and some equipment. Then, he turned his head towards the place he had spent years trying to forget. His home, where his family had been destroyed… Squarento. |
