INSIDE THE HIGH SCHOOL 10:25
AM
On
the first floor of the school, Charnquist emerges
from the boy's restroom. He begins methodically making his way down the hall,
taking brief peeks through the little window in the classroom doors.
INSIDE ROOM 227
Kimble
is standing at the front of the classroom by the blackboard. He is trying to lead the class in a
discussion and at a loss for a more appropriate example, says, "Well, for instance, take surgical
procedures."
Alex,
who has been examining her manicure takes notice of his comment and is now
taking a harder look at her substitute teacher.
"Why?
You a surgeon or something?" Jude asks, attempting to get a laugh from the
class.
"It
doesn't hurt when you read a novel to imagine other contexts that might apply.
Situations you might confront in real life," Kimble elaborates.
"If
you were a doctor, instead of a sub," Zachary suggests snidely from the
back of the class, "you'd be raking in the cash now. Should have thought
of that when you were in school."
His
comment hits home, but Kimble tries to disregard it. "Okay. First of all,
you would put on the mask."
"Aww! Skip to the more interesting parts," Jude prods,
looking around at his peers suggestively.
"That
comes much later." Kimble walks to the classroom door with a worried
expression and peers out the little window.
Lily
watches Thomas, who is still observing Kimble intently.
CORONER'S OFFICE 10:30 AM
Dr.
Alexander looks uneasy at Kari's last question.
Kari knows he's holding back something.
She says to him, "Dr. Alexander, this autopsy report carried a lot
of weight in Dr. Kimble's trial. Now if
you know something, you better tell me.
One way or another I will find it out.
You can save yourself some grief right now if you just tell me what you
know."
Alexander
looking even more nervous than before says, “I want this off the record."
Kari
says, "All right, it's off the record for now. I am going to take notes though." She takes out a tablet and starts to make
notes.
Alexander
says, "Mrs. Kimble's body was brought in here. It was bad.
I hadn't been working here very long and it was my first homicide. I wiped the blood off of her and you're
correct. It was on her right
shoulder. I then started the
autopsy. I barely started making
comments, when Dr. Jones came in with Matthew Ross in tow.”
Kari
very surprised says, "Matthew Ross was allowed in when the autopsy was
about to be performed?"
Alexander
replies, "Yes. I told Dr. Jones
that this was highly irregular and no family member should be in the room when
an autopsy is being performed. Dr. Jones
told me that he was the senior coroner here and he would do as he pleased and
as of that moment Helen Ross Kimble's autopsy was no longer my concern."
DOWNSTAIRS ALMOST DIRECTLY
BELOW THE CLASSROOM
Charnquist mounts the stairs to the second level. He halts outside a teacher's lounge
and listens at the door.
INSIDE
ROOM 227 10:40 AM
Kimble
has just finished diagramming an incision on the blackboard.
"Oh,
I think I’m going to be sick," says Alex.
"You
can go to the restroom if you need to," Kimble offers apologetically.
"Thanks."
She stands and slips on her purse.
"Be
careful out there," Kimble says seriously.
"Whatever."
Alex raises an eyebrow at her friends as she leaves the room.
Kimble
returns to the diagram.
"What
does surgery have to do with the role of voice in the novel?" a heavy-set
teen asks, confused.
"I'm
getting to that," Kimble answers, ad-libbing his way along.
Suddenly
Thomas smacks his head and turns to whisper to Lily. She looks at him and then
back at Kimble, shocked.
"Tell
him," Lily dares, poking Thomas. "Go on, tell him!"
Goaded,
Thomas stands. Sensing that something is going on, the other students encourage
Thomas to speak. Kimble is still writing on the blackboard, his back turned to
the class.
"I
know who you are," Thomas declares. All attention shifts to him. Kimble
freezes, the chalk in his hand.
"You're
that famous doctor who didn't kill his wife, but everyone thinks you did.
You're Richard Kimble."
CORONER'S OFFICE
Kari
stunned by what she has heard says, "Dr. Alexander, please look at these
crime scene photos and compare them with the autopsy photos and tell me what
you think."
Alexander
says, "You're right at first glance there doesn't appear to be a difference. The blood almost shrouds her injury, but
you're right there is no blood on her left shoulder and the direction the blood
is moving shows me she took the blow to the right side of her head as I
originally theorized when I first saw her." He looks almost scared as he says, "I'm
not sure I like where this is going Agent Holmes."
Kari
very seriously says, "Can we redevelop the film used for the autopsy
photos?"
Alexander
says, "I don't see why not. We keep
it on file. Why don't we also take a look
at the x-ray of her skull?" He
walks to a filing cabinet and takes out an x-ray and hangs it up to the light.
Kari
says, "The x-ray is parroting what the autopsy photos show but only
because you've got the x-ray in where the front side is indicated." Kari takes the x-ray and turns it to the
other side. She holds up the crime scene
photo next to the x-ray and both are not surprised when the skull fracture
matches where the main wound appears to be on the crime scene photo.
Alexander
says, "Let me take the negatives for the autopsy photos and put them in
the machine immediately. And don't worry
I'll make sure they go in the correct way." He leaves.
Kari continues to look at the photos and the x-ray very intently.
DOWN THE HALLWAY IN THE
GIRL'S BATHROOM 10:45 AM
Alex
takes out her cell phone and dials her father.
The phone rings. "Capt.
Gerard, " he answers.
Alex
says, "Daddy?"
Gerard
says, "Alex, why are you calling me when you should be in class?"
Alex
replies, "Daddy, I know this is going to sound crazy, but Dr. Kimble is my
substitute teacher for English class today."
There
is a silence on the other end of the phone.
Alex says, "Daddy are you there?"
Gerard
replies, "I'm here Alex, I just wanted to make sure I heard you
correctly. Dr. Kimble is your substitute
teacher in English class today?"
