The Horse is Dead, Dismount

Lately, as more and more people are getting access to the original Bishoujo Senshi Sailormoon, more and more anti-DiC organizations, articles, etc. have been popping up. One would think this might actually be a good thing and that maybe if this had happened early on, things might be different. But, I for one, am sick of all the DiC bashing. Yes they ruined Sailormoon, yes the dub sucks, yes they changed all the characters names and personalities. Everybody knows what DiC did and some of us are rather sick of hearing about it over and over. Now, I've done my fair share of DiC bashing in my day, but that was over a year ago. I mean, rants 1 and 2 were both written before June of 1999. Lately, I could care less what DiC or Cloverway does to Sailormoon. This does not mean I don't care about Sailormoon. I have the whole series in subtitles thanks to Alex-sama, so why should I care about what happens to the dub? I don't like the dub, so I don't watch it. It's as simple as that. Yes, I am watching the dubbed Super episodes for comparison and was actually rather pleased with the result, even though all the voices sucked instead of just most of them. Even SOS (wtf?!) is doing some of it's own dub bashing:

"Keeping Americans Dumb

Perhaps the pink spore is in on this plot?

We had heard months ago about the choice of changing the name of Chibi Moon to Mini Moon and decided it was (if you'll excuse the pun) too small to quibble over. But now compiled with all of the other problems with the direction of the dub we've decided to speak up a little.

We understand the censoring of sexual material, the editing of violence, the alteration of foreign customs which might confuse the viewer but, once again, some of the companies are needlessly putting their imprint on someone else's work & meaning and contributing to the dumbing down of Americans.

For those of you who don't know, when Chibi-Usa (the majority of fans no longer call her Rini) turns into a Sailor Senshi (okay, Sailor Scout to some of you), she is called Chibi Moon. Chibi means small in Japanese. In the "Sailor Moon S" movie Cloverway & Pioneer changed her name to Mini Moon so as not to confuse the kids (WHO MUST NEVER LEARN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE)!

Compare this situation to what happens in Japan. Do you know what Sailor Moon is called there? It ain't Funanori Tsuki. Yeah, you've guessed it; she's called Sailor Moon. The Japanese are into something called education & exploration of foreign cultures; Cloverway is not.

Furthermore, this absolutely clueless choice was kept even after (and not before) the release of the Austin Powers feature, "The Spy Who Shagged Me" which featured a character named Mini-Me. The usage of Mini Moon is now a constant reminder of this other character and needlessly interferes with the content and meaning of the original work, created by Naoko Takeuchi."

I mean, what is up with this? These people have been pro-dub for almost 5 years! Come on! SOS thought that because we bought Poptarts we saved Sailormoon and now they're pretty much saying that the dub sucks!

I think I'm right in saying that DiC/dub bashing has gotten way out of hand. If it's so bad, why bother watching it? Don't give me: "It's the only thing I have!" crap either. Make friends with our neighbors to the north, they have more subtitled episodes than they know what to do with. Go to China Town, they're everywhere. Some comic book stores have subtitled episodes (illegaly subtitled episodes, like all mine ;D). Yes, even I made a big deal out of the Super episodes being dubbed. I was curious and thought the whole Mini-Moon thing was hilarious, but I still think that the Sailormoon dub is always going to suck, so I'm going to stick with my subtitled episodes and ignore everything DiC related (except for Captain Planet... that show's hilariously stupid!)
