Have We Forgotten Toei?

While everyone, including myself, is bashing DiC for making too many changes in Sailormoon, have we forgotten that Toei also made many changes from the original Sailormoon as well? The original Japanese Sailormoon was based on the manga, and Toei changed many things in the manga, which is THE original Sailormoon. In the manga, all the senshi were powered up to their star senshi forms. There were also many more senshi in the manga than in the anime. For instance, there was Sailors Mnemosyne, Lethe, Heavy Metal Papillon, Chi, and Phi. These senshi never appeared in the anime, why were they so unimportant? Also something that was changed, when the senshi got their power-ups. Sailormoon usaually gets hers at the end of each season, but in the anime, sometimes it takes to the almost middle of the season to get to Usagi's power-up. Why is this? I mean, a lot of the episodes they put in, while they are funny, really had no importance to the plot. Also, Nehelenia doesn't appear twice in the manga, this only happens in anime, I have no explanation for why they would do this, maybe to lead up to the Eternal power-up for Sailormoon, who knows.

First off, this is Naoko's story. Why did anyone change it to begin with? It was fine as it was. First it was edited by Toei, and then masacarred by DiC. I think Naoko should have had more say as to what went in and what didn't make the cut. I mean come on, most of the SuperS episodes were pointless and predictable until the Amazoness Quartet came along. When the plot was centralized on the Amazon Trio, they showed who the victim would be at the beginning of the episode, so you knew exactly who the show would be based on that day. In the manga, nothing is spelled out right in the beginning for you. It's more complex, makes you think, and is a whole lot more interesting than knowing what happens before it does. I think the popularity of Sailormoon went down in Japan for one reason, the fourth season (SuperS), but that's a whole nother rant. I mean, come on, everybody's favorite season is the Super. I personally really like the StarS as well, but the SuperS was dull. Toei made it too predictable.

So, all in all. When you look at it from that point of view, you find that DiC wasn't the only company that edited a lot of things in Sailormoon, Toei did it's fair share of editing as well. That's not saying I don't like the anime, I still think it's a great anime, but people who think that the original is the anime, they obviously haven't read the real original, the manga. That's the only real original, uncut version of Sailormoon, the way Naoko wanted it to be.
