Eyes on Me

Written by Lady Gizmo.

Out of the window, Raine watched Ellone playing in the central square with one of the Galbadian soldiers. Deciding that she was safe, Raine allowed her thoughts to drift elsewhere. She smiled gently to herself as the first few bars of her favourite song drifted from the radio

Whenever I sang my songs
On the stage, on my own
Whenever I said my words
Wishing they would be heard

Raine had spent much of her time wishing, silently praying for something to go right. She had never told anyone her dreams and hopes. That was until he came along-

I saw you smiling at me
Was it real or just my fantasy
You’d always be there in the corner
Of this tiny little bar

Laguna Loire. Ever since Raine had nursed him back to health, he had been around, determined to repay her. He was the sweetest, most gentle man Raine had ever met. Okay, so he wasn’t a genius, or even close, but his heart seemed almost pure. He loved Ellone dearly and was determined to look after both the child and her. It was what endeared him to Raine. Whether it was the town, the bar or Ellone, he always tried his best. The fact that he was also incredibly handsome didn’t hurt either.

Darling, so there you are
With that look on your face
As if your never hurt
As if your never down

Raine had changed since she met Laguna, and she knew it. His cheerful, upbeat attitude seemed to rub off on her. Having him here meant being stuck in the small town was much less tedious

Shall I be the one for you?
Who pinches you softly but sure
If a frown is shown then
I will know that you are no dreamer

Part of her didn’t want to admit it but Raine loved Laguna. The way he made her feel, the way he treated her, everything about him. Sure he had his faults, but who didn’t

So let me come to you
Close as I want to be
Close enough for me
To feel your heart beating fast
And stay here as I whisper
How I loved your peaceful eyes on me
Did you ever know
That I had mine on you?

Raine knew Laguna more than just cared about her, Ellone had gladly pointed it out on several occasions. She had tried to keep her feelings about Laguna secret, though. For some reason she was afraid to let anyone close to her, lest they disappear and she was left on her own again.

Raine leaned against the window pane, resting her head against the cool surface. She may have wanted more, but everything she had was more than enough

***************

Raine slipped silently out of Winhill, the stars lighting the path in front of her. It was night, and she didn’t want to wake anyone, but Laguna had been gone for hours and she was worried. Following the path over the bluffs, she eventually saw his figure, his back to her.

"Laguna?"

"Oh Raine! It’s you." His eyes held a mixture of surprise and panic. He obviously wasn’t expecting anyone to disturb him here.

"What’s wrong?"

Laguna scratched the back of his head, as he always did when he was nervous.

"Nothing, really!" He turned and started to walk away.

Darling, so share with me
Your love if you have enough
Your tears if your holding back
Or pain if that’s what it is
How can I let you know
I’m more than the dress and the voice

Raine couldn’t believe he wouldn’t talk to her. She ran after him and tried to pull him back. Without a word, Laguna spun round and quickly slid a small band of gold down her wedding finger. Raine looked at the ring, and then Laguna, her eyes asking the simple question.

Just reach me and then
You will know that you are not dreaming

Laguna held up his hand, revealing an identical ring. Raine mimicked the gesture, tears brimming at her eyes. Wordlessly, she flung her arms round Laguna, sheer joy coursing through her, happy to be this close to him.

"I take it this means your staying then?" she asked, eventually

"I’ll never leave you, I promise."

" I love you Laguna Loire."

"I love you too, Raine Loire."

So let me come to you
Close as I want to be
And stay here as I whisper
How I loved your peaceful eyes on me
And did you ever know
That I had mine on you
