Martin Luther King, Jr.

This picture was found on The Seattle Times web site.

During the 1960's, Martin Luther King, Jr. led his fellow black citizens in protest of their lack of civil rights.  When Martin Luther King, Jr. was born, black people didn't have the same rights as white people.  There were parks, restrooms, restaurants, and other places where only white people could go.  There were even separate water fountains for blacks and whites.  There were even certain sections on buses for each -- black people had to sit in the back and white people had to sit in the front. After a black person paid his money to the bus driver, he had to get off the bus and go to the rear entrance and get back on the back of the bus.

Sometimes, after a black person paid the bus driver and got off to go to the back of the bus, the bus would leave without them.

A black woman named Rosa Parks got arrested twice.  Once because she sat in the front of the bus, the second time because she was sitting in the middle of the bus and a white person got on and she wouldn't give him her seat because she was very tired.  If you want to find out more about Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks, check out these web sites:
