"You're lying! He'd never do that to me." The young woman was hysterical. "Get out of my face cop. NOW!" Tears threatened to spill over, however Nora was too angry to let that happen. Instead, the heat of that anger spewed out at the only other person in the room. Michelle lowered her voice, trying to remain calm in the face of the other woman's obvious agitation. "You have to listen to me Nora. I know this is difficult for you, but there's no time to..." "NO!" Nora pulled away from Michelle and entered the living room. "I won't believe it. You're just trying to trap me..." "You have my word. That's not my intention." "Yes it is!" Nora picked up a heavy sculpture off the coffee table and hurled it at the young detective. "GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!" Michelle held her ground. Taking up position by the front door, she responded quietly to the girl's threats. "No." The room was silent for a moment. Nora was too stunned to move. "What did you say?" "I'm not leaving." "Lady, you're insane." Michelle smiled weakly. "Maybe. But Nora, your life is in danger and I won't leave here without you." Nora stood in the middle of her living room and stared at Michelle in confusion. No one had ever stood up to her before. They wouldn't dare. Everyone in the neighbourhood knew who Nora Marshall-Glickney was, and to whom she was connected. In her entire life Nora couldn't remember anyone ever talking back to her, or contradicting one of her orders. Ever. Frozen, and unable to think or speak, Nora suddenly felt her world crashing in around her. "Look at me Nora. Why would I lie to you?" Nora shifted and locked eyes with the petite detective. There was no deception there. No ulterior motive. Shaking her head, Nora began to pace around the room. "No! It can't be." The idea that her own father wanted her dead was totally inconceivable. She looked into the other woman's eyes again. Her heart sank. In that moment Nora instinctively knew that it was true. "I wouldn't lie to you Nora. Not about something like this." Michelle glanced at her watch. They were running out of time. "We have to..." "Why?" The tears that had threatened to cascade over earlier now let loose in a waterfall. Nora clasped her hands over her face and sank to the sofa. "Why!" "I don't know." Crossing the room quietly, Michelle put a comforting hand on the distraught girl's back. What else could she say? Never in her life could Michelle have imagined facing a situation like this one. "Nora?" There was no response from the girl curled up on the sofa. Michelle tried again. "Nora..." Nora, gulping for air, raised her head slightly. Her barely audible reply fought through the sobs emanating deep within her chest. "Y-yes?" "We have to go." Michelle stepped away from the prone figure. "There isn't much time left." Sitting up, Nora struggled to her feet. She brushed her long, black hair from her face and looked around the tidy, well-decorated room forlornly. She remained silent for several minutes as her eyes surveyed the room. Then, lifting her chin slightly, she turned to face Michelle. "Ok. Let's go." Michelle was taken aback for the briefest second. The look in the other woman's eyes was suddenly cold and without feeling. Dead. The fiery woman who had ordered Michelle out of her house less than ten minutes ago was gone. Everything that was good about her had disappeared. It was as if Nora had locked away the pain and disappointment, burying it deep within her. In its place was a cold and calculating soul that was out for blood. |
