The Boathouse

Chloe was in the Quartermaine living room talking on the phone to her assistant Therese.

"I'll deal with the phone calls…later," Chloe told her. "I don't know why my business manager keeps calling. He drinks too much espresso. Please just tell him that I will call him back today at 5 p.m. eastern time…He always yells, Therese. We know he doesn't mean anything."

Just then, Chloe heard the door close and saw Jax walk in behind her.

"I have to go, my plans for the day just walked in. That's the best I can do…I miss you too, au revoir."

"Hey," Jax said.

"Hi!" Chloe said with a smile. "I take it that you are prepared to meet the challenge?"

"Well you're the one who claims to be a champion swimmer."

"Didn't I manage when Irmegard dumped me?"

"Yes, you did. But did I ever mention my speed boat?"

"So that's how it's going to be."

"Do you water ski at all?" Jax asked her.

"Maybe a little," Chloe said.

Jax and Chloe turned to the sound of someone walking into the room. It was Felicia.

"Felicia, hi!" Chloe said.

"Hi there! I loved your dance at the Nurses Ball!"

"Oh, and I loved yours! Are you here to see Lila? Imagine, my first friend in Port Charles writing the memoirs of the woman I admire the most."

"Thank you for loaning me those letters," Felicia said. "I've loved every second of it."

"Loved? You can't be finished. Is there a problem?"

"Well I'm about to find out," Felicia told her.

"Is Lila being reluctant again? How can I help? Perhaps she'll listen to me."

"Or if you want, I could talk to her," Jax offered.

"Oh, she adores Jax!" Chloe said with a smile.

"Well, I'll let you know," Felicia said. "So what are the two of you up to?"

"Oh, we're off to the lake," Chloe said.

"Yeah, we're just trying to sneak out," Jax added.

"Oh, well have fun." Felicia looked at Jax suspiciously. "Whatever you do, don't let Jax trick you into water skiing."

"Bye-bye, Felicia!" Jax said quickly and laughed. "Come on, let's go," he said to Chloe.

Chloe and Jax then said bye to Felicia and headed to the lake.

Jax and Chloe, after having fun in the water, went over to the boathouse to dry off.

"You were deliberately trying to dump me off that ski!" Chloe accused.

"I just wanted to see if you could actually swim," Jax explained.

"By laughing so hard you could barely drive the boat? All those zigzags were completely unnecessary!"

"Well excuse me, if you weren't so stubborn, you could have let go!"

"Oh! And give you the satisfaction of dumping me? I don't think so!" Chloe shot back.

"You're very tenacious, Chloe."

"What I really am is starved! Why didn't I ask Cook to pack us a lunch? She would have."

"Well lucky for you, I brought something." Jax walked over to the bench and produced a picnic basket.

"Did you raid Ned's refrigerator again?" Chloe asked.

"No, not this time." Jax took the contents of the basket out and set the table. Chloe agreed that the food looked terrific.

"Well," Jax said, smiling at her. "Let's eat."

Chloe nodded.

Jax and Chloe talked about their careers over lunch. Jax told Chloe about the rush he got when he raided companies, and Chloe told Jax about how she worked in the "zone" when she sketched.

"Do you realize how lucky we are to make a living doing what we love the most? To be privileged enough to live our dreams?" Chloe asked.

"Have you ever considered going into retail?" Jax asked after a while.

"Oh, and we were having such a grand time," Chloe complained.

Jax laughed. "Oh come on, I mean, that's where the money is, right?"

"I know, but why? I love what I do, why make it work? I'd have to answer telephones and learn to deal with money and, probably learn to use a fax machine too."

"Well I could help you," Jax said.

"My work is what I do for fun. It's my only dream. Why spoil all that, when we have all this?"

"Well I do have a flash of brilliance now and again." Jax gazed at her intently.

Chloe returned his gazed. "Mostly now," she said, and they leaned forward to kiss.

"GET OFF MY PROPERTY OR I'M CALLING THE POLICE!" Edward bellowed, interrupting them.

Edward marched over to them. "You, sir, you're trespassing! And, Chloe, even family doesn't tie up my phone lines."

"Jax is my guest," Chloe explained.

"Oh? Well this is my boathouse and I want you to get him out!"

"How did you find us anyway?" Jax asked.

"Well unlike certain members of my family and that useless butler of ours, I happen to believe that my staff should work for a living and I expect to know who is on my property at all times, and I do."

"Well," Chloe said, "if I've been here with my dear friend Jax, how could I possibly be tying up your phone lines?"

"Because your infernal business manager has left 15 messages in the last two hours."

Chloe suddenly got a worried expression.

"That would mean he's called a time or two," Jax said.

"Right, and he's probably called up to 20 by now. Here, I brought this." Edward handed Chloe a cordless phone. "I want you to return his call immediately."

"Thank you, I will," Chloe said. She took the phone and went to make the call.

Edward turned to Jax. "And you, just clean up this mess and get out."

"You know, Edward, actually, I appreciate you tracking me down because I've been wanting to express my concern about AJ as CEO of ELQ."

"Oh! Well if you have a problem with the leadership, why don't you just sell me your stocks and get out!"

"Well that's a nice try, but somebody's got to keep an eye on that grandson of yours."

"I'll appreciate you staying away from my family," Edward growled. "And that certainly includes Chloe." Edward then stormed away.

After Edward left, Chloe just got off the phone with her business manager. It was not good news, and Jax could tell just by looking at her that something was wrong.

"Chloe?" he asked, concerned.

Chloe turned to him and looked as if she was going to cry. "Everything I've ever wanted, I'm a breath away from losing my only dream."
