MEMORIES OF DIANA, PART SIX
"I know I am being very sinful," said Diana, "But I don't feel like a sinner."
"How do you feel?" said Carl.
"Like a different person." said Diana, "No, that is not it. I am still me, but a New me - the Real me."
In the weeks since Diana and Carl had become lovers, her discovery of her own sensuality had made her a willing pupil for Carl's lessons in the art of love. He sometimes wondered if Nikos was reaping the benefit of Carl's tutelage.
"I must go." said Diana, getting out of bed.
"Must you?" said Carl, "I hate having to keep one eye on the clock whenever we are together."
"So do I." said Diana. She started to dress.
"It's a shame to cover up that beautiful body." said Carl, " 'No beauty doth she miss, when all her clothes are on/ But Beauty's Self she is, when all her clothes are gone'."
After Diana left, Carl pondered the fact that stolen afternoons with her were not enough. He wanted to sweep her up and carry her off to some place where he could have her all to himself - take care of her - Cherish her the way she deserved to be cherished.
When he lost Justine, Carl had thought that he could never love another woman, yet somehow Diana had made her way past his defenses and into his heart. His love for Diana was, however, different from what he had felt for Justine. There had been great passion there, but not much tenderness; Justine neither expected tenderness nor wanted it. Justine had been a falcon - fierce and proud; Diana was a dove. Perhaps she appealed to a different side of his nature.

A few weeks later, Nikos invited everyone he knew - including Carl - to a party at his house.
"I asked you all here to give you the good news!" said Nikos, "At last, I am going to have a son!"
Startled, Carl looked over at Diana. She refused to meet his eyes.
"A toast!" said Nikos, "To my son - Achillles Nikos!" Everyone drank.
"Aren't you being a trifle premature, Alex?" said Carl, "What if it's a daughter?"
"It will be a son." said Nikos, decisively.
It was later in the evening when Carl managed to get Diana alone. "Is that my baby?"
"Alex is my husband." said Diana, "So it is His baby."
"Legally speaking, yes, a married woman's husband is the father of her child," said Carl, "But whose is it really?'
"I don't know." said Diana, defiantly. "Does it matter?"
"I should think it would matter quite a lot to Alex!" said Carl, "Diana - I was going to tell you this tomorrow - I'm leaving Athens-"
"Oh." said Diana, "I see. It's because I'm pregnant - you don't want me any more."
"No, that's not it at all!" said Carl, "I must go away, on business. I"ll be back! In the meantime, I'll write. Look here's the key to a post office box. I'll send my letters there. That way, Alex won't find out. I wouldn't leave you if I didn't have to do it - especially not now!"
